To use Siri with your HomeKit accessories, add them to Apple Home on an iPhone or iPad, give each one a distinctive name and room, then ask Siri to control it by name, location, or scene. A home hub—HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV—is needed for control when you’re away and for automations.

Set up an accessory in Apple Home

  1. Prepare the accessory. Turn it on and keep it near your iPhone or iPad. Check that it is compatible with Apple Home: look for the Works with Apple Home or Matter designation. For a Thread-based Matter accessory, check whether your setup includes a compatible Thread-enabled hub or border router.
  2. Open the Home app. On your iPhone or iPad, tap Add, then Add Accessory.
  3. Pair it. Scan the accessory’s setup code or hold your device near it, then follow the prompts. If the Matter accessory is already paired with another service, choose More Options when prompted.
  4. Allow network access if asked. Follow any on-screen request so the accessory can connect.
  5. Choose a room and a clear name. Use a short, distinctive name that you can say naturally. Avoid giving multiple accessories the same name; Siri uses the names and room assignments saved in Home to identify what you mean.

Apple’s accessory setup guide recommends assigning a room and name to make accessories easier to identify and control. You can’t add accessories to Apple Home from a Mac; use an iPhone or iPad for pairing. Samsung TVs that support AirPlay are not thereby HomeKit-compatible and can’t be added to Home.

What to say to Siri

Once an accessory is in Home, use its name, room, or zone in a request. You can also ask Siri to activate a scene or report an accessory’s status. These examples show common phrasing:

Control an accessory or room

  • “Turn on the lights.”
  • “Turn off the fan.”
  • “Turn on the fan in the office.”
  • “Turn off the lights downstairs.”
  • “Adjust the brightness downstairs to 50%.”
  • “Make the lights blue in the bedroom.”
  • “Set the temperature to 20 degrees.”
  • “Start heating the upstairs.”

Check or change a specific device

  • “Lock the front door.”
  • “Are the lights on downstairs?”
  • “Did I close the garage door?”

Use a scene

  • “Siri, good night.”
  • “Siri, set my reading scene.”
  • “Hey Siri, I’m home.”

Use the exact accessory, room, or scene name you assigned in Home if Siri doesn’t identify the intended target. For accessories with similar names, rename them so the spoken requests are unambiguous.

Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV?

You can pair accessories and control them locally through Siri without buying a separate hub. Apple lists HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs. A hub is required for control while you’re away, shared control, and automations. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically during setup; Apple TV becomes one when assigned to a room.

Thread-based Matter accessories have an additional requirement: they need a Thread-enabled hub or a supported Thread border router. A hub that lacks Thread support may not meet that requirement.

Use Siri with scenes and automations

Scenes: one request, several actions

A scene groups actions across accessories. For example, an Apple Home “Good Night” scene can turn off lights and lock the front door. Create and name a scene in Home, then ask Siri to activate it by name.

Automations: actions triggered by an event

Automations run when conditions you choose are met. Apple Home can use triggers such as a time, location, people arriving or leaving, sensor detection, or another accessory being turned on, turned off, opened, or otherwise triggered. Set up automations in Home; a home hub is needed for them to run.

  • Useful Home features: Verify that the accessory supports the rooms, scenes, or automations you intend to use.
  • Accessory function: Choose based on the task—lighting, comfort, security, or entry—and check that the specific functions you need are exposed in Apple Home.

If Siri can’t control an accessory

  • Check power and proximity. Make sure the accessory is on, nearby during setup, and connected.
  • Confirm compatibility and pairing. Verify Apple Home or Matter support and add it from Home on an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac.
  • Check its name and room. In Home, confirm the accessory’s assigned room and distinctive name; use those details in your request.
  • Check the hub for remote control or automations. Confirm that the home hub is active and online. For a Thread Matter device, also confirm that a Thread-enabled hub or supported border router is available.
  • Review network and account setup. Apple recommends checking Wi-Fi, iCloud Keychain, and two-factor authentication when resolving Home hub issues.
  • Update or restart an unresponsive hub. If the hub is not responding, update its software and restart it, then try the request again.
