Shift is an alternate way to play a character in Disney Lorcana. Reveal a character with Shift, choose a legal character you already control, pay the printed Shift cost instead of its normal ink cost, and place the new card on top of the existing character. For standard Shift, the character underneath must have the same name.

The stack keeps the underlying character’s current state. Shifting does not automatically ready the character or remove damage, so whether the new card can quest or challenge immediately depends on the character underneath. Duo, Combo, Team, and Temporary Shift use additional requirements or timing rules.

What Shift means on a Lorcana card

Shift is an alternative play instruction, not an additional fee. A card with a reminder such as “Shift (You may pay N {I} to play this on top of one of your characters named X.)” gives you two ways to play that character:

  • Pay its normal ink cost and play it by the ordinary rules.
  • Use Shift, pay the printed Shift number in ink, and play it on top of the required character.

You choose one method. You do not pay both the normal cost and the Shift cost. The new card and the qualifying card become one stack in your play area. Unless an effect says otherwise, the card on top is the character currently represented by that stack.

Standard Shift uses a matching name. If the reminder says the card must be played on a character named “X,” you must control a character with that exact required name. A similar-looking character, a character with a different version of the name, or a character in your discard pile does not satisfy that requirement.

Check these requirements before announcing Shift

Before you commit ink, verify all of the following:

  • The card is in your hand and has a Shift instruction.
  • You control a character that satisfies the instruction. Standard Shift normally requires the same character name.
  • The candidate character is in play and can legally receive the new card.
  • You can pay the printed Shift cost, after applying any cost modification that the current rules allow.
  • You are not trying to combine two incompatible alternate-cost instructions.

Variant instructions override the standard name requirement. A card that says Duo Shift, Combo Shift, Team Shift, or Temporary Shift must be handled according to that card’s wording and the current comprehensive rules.

How to perform a standard Shift

  1. Identify the Shift card. Confirm that the character in your hand has Shift and read its printed Shift number and qualifying name.
  2. Choose the base character. Select a character you control that matches the required name. For ordinary Shift, this is one character with the same name specified in the reminder text.
  3. Announce the alternate cost. State that you are using Shift rather than paying the character’s normal ink cost. This makes clear which play method you are using.
  4. Pay the Shift cost. Exert the required amount of ink, applying any legal cost reduction or increase that affects this alternate play.
  5. Build the stack and resolve effects. Put the Shift card on top of the qualifying character. The cards now form one stack in play. Resolve effects that apply to playing or shifting, following the card text and the current comprehensive rules.

If any requirement fails before the card is played—for example, the only possible base has the wrong name—you cannot use Shift for that play. You may still play the card normally if you can pay its regular cost and it is otherwise legal.

Shift cost versus normal ink cost

Play method What you pay Where the card goes Required base
Normal play The character’s printed ink cost, modified by effects that apply to normal play Into play as a new character None, unless another effect imposes one
Standard Shift The printed Shift number, not the normal ink cost On top of one qualifying character One character with the required matching name
Duo Shift The printed Duo Shift cost On top of two qualifying characters One character matching each required name
Combo Shift The printed Combo Shift cost On one qualifying character or on both, as allowed by the card The one-name or two-name requirement stated by the card
Team Shift The printed Team Shift cost On top of a qualifying named character Either named character when the card specifically uses Team Shift

The Shift number replaces the normal ink cost. For example, if a card costs seven ink normally and shows Shift 3, a legal Shift play uses three ink, not ten. If you cannot meet the Shift requirement, you cannot pay the Shift number as a shortcut; you must use normal play instead.

Cost reductions and free-play effects

Official set notes explain that an effect allowing a Floodborn character to be played for free or for less ink can apply when you use Shift, provided the current comprehensive rules allow that interaction. Read the effect’s exact wording: some effects modify a cost, while others provide a separate alternate way to play a card.

The comprehensive rules limit a play to the applicable alternate-cost method where the rules say only one alternate cost can be used. In practice, do not assume that a free-play instruction and Shift can both replace the cost. Determine which alternate cost you are using, then apply only the modifications permitted to that cost.

How the Shift stack behaves

Shifting does not create a second independent character in the same location. The new card is placed on top of the base card, and the cards remain together as a stack. The underlying card is still physically present and its state matters for several rules questions.

The top card represents the shifted character

The top card is the character you normally use for its name, abilities, strength, willpower, and other printed characteristics. Effects that specifically refer to shifting can identify what happened during the play. When an effect concerns the stack’s existing status, look at the state carried by the character underneath and at any applicable card text.

Cards underneath are not discarded automatically

Putting a Shift card on top does not send the base character to the discard pile. It remains under the new card in the same play stack until an effect or game rule moves it. This is why protecting a legal base character can be strategically important: losing that base before you Shift may remove your cheapest or only route to the alternate play.

Can a shifted character quest or challenge immediately?

Sometimes. Shift does not automatically make a character ready, and it does not erase the underlying character’s dry or exerted state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the base character was already dry and otherwise eligible to act, the shifted character can quest or challenge during the same turn that the Shift card is played.
  • If the base character was exerted, the new top card inherits that exerted state and cannot quest or challenge until it becomes ready.
  • If the base character was still restricted from acting because it had just entered play or because another effect prohibited an action, shifting does not bypass that restriction.

This is the key timing difference between replacing a seasoned character and playing a fresh character from hand. Before announcing Shift for an immediate action, check the base character’s current readiness and every effect that could restrict questing or challenging.

Does Shift remove damage or other status?

No. Shifting does not clear damage counters. The official FAQ answers the question directly: “Does shifting a character remove damage counters? A: No, any damage remains.” Damage on the character underneath remains associated with the stack unless a card effect specifically removes or changes it.

The same principle applies to exertion and other status information. A Shift card is not a reset button. If the base was exerted, damaged, or subject to another continuing restriction, assume that condition remains unless the relevant card or rule says otherwise.

What happens when a shifted character leaves play?

For an ordinary shifted stack, if the top character leaves play, the top card moves to the discard pile or other destination specified by the effect, while the cards underneath remain in the play zone. A banish effect that affects the top character therefore does not automatically remove every card in the stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Always read the effect that caused the character to leave. A card may explicitly move the entire stack, name cards underneath, or change the normal destination. If no such instruction exists, handle the top card and the underlying cards separately according to the ordinary shifted-stack rule.

Shift variants and their special procedures

Duo Shift

Duo Shift requires two base characters: one matching each name listed on the dual-named Shift card. You must control both qualifying characters when you announce the play. Place the two base cards underneath the Shift card in an order of your choice, producing a three-card stack.

Duo Shift is therefore more demanding than standard Shift: you need two specific characters in play, but you also combine them into one stack with a single top character. If either required name is missing, you cannot use Duo Shift for that play.

Combo Shift

Combo Shift combines the standard and Duo requirements. Its wording allows you to Shift onto one matching character or onto both matching characters. Use the one-base option when you control only one of the required names; use the two-base option when you control both and the card’s instruction permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you use both bases, follow the Duo procedure for placing the two cards under the Shift card, including choosing their order. The exact card text controls which combinations are legal, so do not treat every dual-named character as automatically having both options.

Team Shift

Team Shift is a separate instruction for a dual-named card. When the card says Team Shift, it can be played on top of either named character. You do not need both characters unless the card specifically says so. The important distinction is the printed keyword: a dual name by itself does not create a Duo or Team Shift permission.

Temporary Shift

Temporary Shift places the card on a qualifying base for a limited time. At the end of the turn, if the stack is still in play, the Temporary Shift card returns to its owner’s hand and damage is removed from that returned card.

If the Temporary Shift card was banished before the end of the turn, it does not return to hand; it remains in the discard pile or other destination specified by the banish effect. The return therefore depends on both the timing window and the stack still existing in play when that window arrives.

How to evaluate a Shift play

Shift is not automatically better than normal play. Use these five checks to decide whether the alternate cost is worth using:

  1. Compare costs. Subtract the Shift cost from the normal ink cost, but account for the value of the base character you are committing to the stack.
  2. Protect the base. Ask how reliably you can keep the required name in play. A low Shift number is less useful if the base is easy to remove or rarely appears.
  3. Check readiness. A dry base can let the new character act immediately; an exerted base carries a timing disadvantage into the Shift.
  4. Value the stack. Stacking can preserve a character’s position and may let one play upgrade an existing board piece, but it also concentrates cards under one top card that can become vulnerable to effects targeting the stack or its underlying cards.
  5. Account for variant risk. Duo and Combo require more precise board states, Team changes which base names are acceptable, and Temporary Shift trades a short-term upgrade for a scheduled return to hand.

Worked timing examples

Standard Shift onto a dry character

Suppose a card has a normal cost of seven ink and Shift 3, and you control a dry character with the required name. You announce Shift, pay three ink, and place the new card on top. Because the base was dry and no other effect restricts it, the shifted character can quest or challenge that turn.

Standard Shift onto an exerted character

Suppose the same base character is exerted after questing. You may still Shift the new card onto it if all requirements are legal, but the stack remains exerted. The shifted character cannot quest or challenge immediately merely because its printed card is new.

Damage carried into a Shift

If the base has damage before you Shift, that damage remains on the stack after the new card is placed on top. The Shift action changes the top character; it does not heal the board. Use a separate healing effect if you need to remove the damage.

Duo requirement

If a Duo Shift card names two different characters, controlling only one of them is insufficient. You must have both names in play, pay the Duo Shift cost, and place both bases beneath the Shift card. If one base is missing, the legal alternatives are to wait, play the card normally if allowed, or use another play method provided by an effect.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Paying both costs: Shift is an alternate cost. Pay the Shift number instead of the normal ink cost.
  • Using a similar name: Standard Shift requires the name specified by the reminder text, not merely a character with related art or a similar title.
  • Assuming the new card is ready: Check whether the base was dry or exerted before the Shift.
  • Expecting healing: Damage remains unless an effect explicitly removes it.
  • Discarding the whole stack when the top leaves: Under the ordinary rule, move the top card and leave the cards underneath in play.
  • Treating every dual-named card as Duo: Use Duo, Combo, or Team procedures only when that exact Shift variant appears on the card.
  • Combining alternate costs automatically: Apply the current comprehensive rules’ limitation on alternate costs and follow the exact wording of the cost-reducing effect.
  • Returning a banished Temporary Shift card to hand: Temporary Shift returns the card only if the stack is still in play at the end of the turn; a card already banished stays in its destination.

Which rules document should you check?

Shift interactions can change as the comprehensive rules are clarified. Ravensburger’s official resources hub lists the current comprehensive-rules document and its revision date; the hub records an update dated 07/09/26. Use that version for edge cases involving alternate costs, effects that play cards for free, stack destinations, or newer Shift variants.

Ravensburger set notes and the official FAQ provide the reminder wording for standard Shift, the clarification that cost reductions can apply to Shift when the rules permit, and the explicit ruling that shifting does not remove damage. Attack of the Vine! release notes describe the procedures for Duo, Combo, and Temporary Shift, while the developer material gives design context and examples of Shift bases. When a card’s text and a general assumption conflict, follow the card text together with the current comprehensive rules.
