To use NameDrop, bring the top of your iPhone close to the top of another person’s iPhone or Apple Watch and wait for NameDrop to appear on both screens. Choose whether to share your contact card and receive theirs, or receive their details only. If you share, review the fields first. NameDrop is for sending new contact information, not updating an existing contact.
What you need before using NameDrop
Both iPhones need iOS 17.1 or later. If an Apple Watch is part of the exchange, it must run watchOS 10.1 or later; supported models are Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models. Apple documents these requirements in its NameDrop safety guide.
Before exchanging details, check your own contact card: open Contacts, tap My Card, then tap Edit. Confirm that the name, phone numbers, and email addresses are the ones you intend to share.
How to share contact details between iPhones
- Hold your iPhone display a few centimeters from the top of the other person’s iPhone.
- Keep the phones close until NameDrop appears on both screens.
- Choose to share your contact card and receive the other person’s, or choose to receive their details only.
- If you are sharing your card, open the disclosure control, select the contact fields to include, then tap Save. Apple says your field selections remain selected by default the next time you use NameDrop.

How to use NameDrop with Apple Watch
Share from Watch to Watch
- Open Contacts on your Apple Watch.
- Tap your picture in the top-right corner, then tap Share.
- Bring your watch close to the other person’s Apple Watch.
Share from Watch to iPhone

What NameDrop shares—and what it does not
NameDrop shares your name, the phone number or email address you choose, and Contact Poster information associated with your card. It does not share other card details such as your home address or birthday. Your pronouns are not shared by default when you share your own details, and another person’s pronouns are never shared. You can control which eligible contact fields to include when you share your card.

Cancel an exchange or turn off NameDrop
To cancel before the transfer completes, move the devices apart or lock the iPhone. To turn off NameDrop on iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirDrop and switch off Bring Devices Together. That setting also turns off other features that use Bring Devices Together.

NameDrop sends new contact information; it does not merge details into or correct a contact already saved by the recipient. Apple Support puts it plainly: “NameDrop only works for sending new contact information, not updating an existing contact.” If a saved number or email needs correction, update that contact directly.
