To have a spoken, back-and-forth conversation with Microsoft Copilot, open Copilot, select the Voice control in the message composer, allow microphone access if asked, and speak after Copilot’s greeting. Use the microphone control to pause or resume listening, and select X to end the session. A transcript is available afterward.

Voice chat is different from dictation, which turns speech into text for a prompt, and Read aloud, which speaks an existing response. The steps and availability can vary by app, account, region, and rollout.

Start and manage a voice conversation

  1. Open Copilot. Use the Copilot app or a supported web experience. On mobile, Microsoft’s instructions say to open the Copilot app and choose Speak or the voice control in the prompt box. Some consumer mobile users may also see “Hey, Copilot.” The controls shown can vary by app and account. Microsoft’s voice guide and its mobile instructions describe these entry points.
  2. Select Voice. Choose the Voice icon in the message composer or prompt box. If prompted, grant microphone permission. If the prompt does not appear or you previously denied access, check your device’s app permissions or your browser’s site settings.
  3. Wait for Copilot’s greeting, then speak. Ask a question naturally and continue speaking when you want to follow up. Copilot replies aloud as part of the same conversation.
  4. Pause or resume listening. Select the microphone control to pause listening; select it again to resume.
  5. End the session. Select X. Microsoft says sessions may have limits and can disconnect automatically when a limit is reached.

After you end the conversation, a text transcript is available for reference. Microsoft’s instructions say that users can scroll through the conversation, copy content, and follow up on action items. Check any important transcript for speech-recognition errors before reusing it.

Choose the right Copilot speech feature

Copilot offers three distinct ways to use speech. The right one depends on whether you want to enter text, listen to an answer, or talk back and forth.

Use Vision to share a screen or camera view

Vision adds visual context during a voice chat. Depending on your device and access, you can share a desktop screen or point a mobile camera at something for Copilot to discuss.

Share a desktop screen or window

  1. Start a voice conversation.
  2. Select the screen-share control and choose whether to share the full screen or a window.
  3. Ask Copilot about the visible content, such as a dashboard, page, or error message.
  4. Stop screen sharing when you are done. Stopping the visual share does not end the voice conversation.

Microsoft documents desktop Vision in its screen-sharing instructions.

Know what Vision can and cannot do

  • Access depends on account and rollout. Microsoft’s work instructions require a Copilot license.
  • Vision works during voice chat. Daily use may be capacity-based and count against voice usage.
  • It cannot read videos or animated GIFs.
  • Switching windows too quickly can lead Copilot to answer about the wrong content; let the intended screen settle before asking.
  • Vision can guide you through what it sees, but it does not directly operate your PC, web browser, or phone.

Check access, language, and response reliability

Seeing the Voice control is the quickest way to check whether it is available in your current Copilot experience, but its presence and functionality are not guaranteed for every account. Microsoft says availability can depend on subscription and region, and its guidance describes a gradual rollout. The official pages do not describe availability in fully aligned terms for every account type, so confirm current eligibility for your specific account rather than assuming that a feature listed for one Copilot experience is available in another.

Microsoft says Voice works in Copilot-supported languages. Its supported-language page, updated in September 2026, labels its enumerated spoken-language list as applying to personal accounts. Do not assume that list also applies to work or school accounts; check the current language and eligibility details for your account type.

  • Background speech and noise can affect what Copilot hears. Move somewhere quieter or use a microphone closer to you if recognition is poor.
  • Speech recognition can misinterpret words, so review important dictated text and transcripts before sharing or acting on them.
  • Voice answers can be shorter or differ from text answers because Microsoft says the capabilities use different models. Verify consequential answers rather than relying on spoken output alone.

Understand audio and transcript handling by account type

Microsoft describes different handling for different features and account types. Its statements about transcription, temporary audio storage, and conversation history are not a single universal retention rule.

Account type Dictation Copilot Voice Read aloud
Work or school Audio is sent for transcription and Microsoft says it is not stored. Audio is temporarily stored for feedback scenarios, accessed only if you submit feedback, and deleted after 48 hours. Background sounds may be included. Uses client-side text-to-speech; Microsoft says its audio is not recorded or stored.
Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro Microsoft’s guide says voice data is used to provide the experience; transcripts are handled like other Copilot conversation history. Voice data is used to provide the experience; transcripts are handled like other Copilot conversation history. Microsoft’s FAQ separately says voice chat does not use user data to train the model. Microsoft’s guide describes Read aloud as using client-side text-to-speech and says its audio is not recorded or stored.

These details come from Microsoft’s voice guide and its Voice FAQ. Consult the current guidance for your account if these distinctions affect what you are comfortable sharing.
