Back Tap lets you assign a double-tap or triple-tap on the back of a supported iPhone to a built-in action or a shortcut. To set it up, open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, choose a gesture, and select what it should do.

Check whether your iPhone supports Back Tap

Apple lists Back Tap for iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or later, and recommends updating to the latest iOS available for your iPhone. Back Tap is built into iOS; Apple’s setup instructions do not require a separate product. See Apple’s Back Tap instructions for its availability guidance.

Set a double-tap or triple-tap action

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  3. Tap Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Choose an action from the list, such as Screenshot, Control Center, or an accessibility action.
  5. Return to the Back Tap screen. Choose the other gesture if you want to assign it a different action.
  6. Try the assigned gesture by tapping the back of your iPhone twice or three times.

Double Tap and Triple Tap are configured independently, so you can assign either one or both. The available actions may depend on your iOS version and configuration.

Make Back Tap run a shortcut

Create or obtain the shortcut in Apple’s Shortcuts app first. Once it is available on the iPhone, assign it to a Back Tap gesture:

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  2. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  3. Scroll to the Shortcuts section of the assignment list and select the shortcut you want.
  4. Return to the Back Tap screen, then use the selected gesture to run the shortcut.

Apple describes this as running a shortcut when you double-tap or triple-tap the back of your phone. If a shortcut needs the current onscreen item from another app, Apple’s Shortcuts guide also explains how shortcuts can receive onscreen items.

Choose actions that fit how you use your phone

  • Screenshot: assign it if you frequently capture what is currently displayed.
  • Control Center: use it as a shortcut to quick system controls.
  • Accessibility action: choose a feature you use often, if it appears in the list.
  • Custom shortcut: select a workflow you have already set up and want to launch on demand.

When deciding which gesture gets which action, consider how often you need it and which tapping pattern feels comfortable. Apple’s Accessibility features page says Back Tap offers “more than 20 different actions”; that is Apple’s published claim, accessed in 2026, not an independently verified count. The available choices can vary by iOS version and configuration. See Apple’s Accessibility features page.

If Back Tap is missing or does not work as expected

  • Back Tap is not in Settings: check that the device is an iPhone 8 or later and that it is running iOS 14 or later. Install the latest iOS version available for the device, then look again under Accessibility > Touch.
  • Your shortcut is not listed: make sure you have created or obtained it in the Shortcuts app on that iPhone, then reopen the Back Tap assignment list.
  • The selected action does not run: confirm that the gesture is assigned under the correct Double Tap or Triple Tap setting and try it again.

Apple’s published guidance does not specify a recognition success rate or establish how particular case materials affect tap recognition. It also does not promise identical behavior in every app context.
