If Chrome asks for biometrics when filling a saved password on a computer, enable the password-fill authentication setting in Google Password Manager: on a Windows PC, turn on Use Windows Hello when filling passwords; on a Mac, turn on Use your screen lock when filling passwords. Google says this desktop setting is off by default. On Android, check which autofill service Chrome is using—the password-fill and passkey sign-in flows are different.
Enable biometric authentication for password filling on a computer
In Chrome on a Windows PC or Mac, open More → Passwords and autofill → Google Password Manager → Settings. Turn on the platform’s password-filling option, then complete the on-screen confirmation.
- Windows PC: Select Use Windows Hello when filling passwords.
- Mac: Select Use your screen lock when filling passwords.
Google says biometric authentication is off by default. Once enabled, device authentication can be used when Chrome autofills passwords and when you reveal, copy, or edit saved passwords. See Google Chrome Help: Manage passwords in Chrome — Computer.
Check the autofill service on Android
Android’s setting is about which service supplies autofill information. In Chrome, open More → Settings → Autofill services. Select Autofill with Google to use Google Password Manager, or choose the other service you intend to use.

- Target Applications - Desktop PC security, Mobile PCs, Custom applications
- Indoor, home and office use
- Blue LED - soft, cool blue glow fits into any environment; doesn't compete in low light environments
- Small form factor - conserves valuable desk space
- Rugged construction - high-quality metal casing weighted to resist unintentional movement
Changing the provider restarts Chrome. If you choose a different autofill service, autofill data comes from that third-party password manager. On a work or school Chrome installation, an administrator may control the setting. Details: Google Chrome Help: Fill in forms automatically in Chrome — Android.
To use an already saved password, visit the site in Chrome, open its sign-in form, and select the username field to choose saved sign-in information. For the Android steps, see Google Chrome Help: Get started with Google Password Manager — Android.

Tell password autofill apart from passkey sign-in
A saved password is filled into a sign-in form. A passkey is a separate sign-in method: on Android, Google says a passkey in Google Password Manager can be used by scanning a fingerprint or face, or by entering a short PIN. Google states that biometric data for Android passkeys is stored on the device and is not shared with Google. That statement applies to the Android passkey flow described in Google’s instructions, not every biometric authentication flow.
For passkey details, see Google Chrome Help: Manage passkeys in Chrome — Android and Google Chrome Help: Use passwords & passkeys across your devices — Android.

What a Chrome authentication prompt means
A request to confirm your identity can appear when you use or manage saved passwords. Google lists a Google Account username and password, or facial or fingerprint recognition, as possible confirmation methods. A prompt by itself does not mean you need to buy or connect a new biometric accessory. Read Google Chrome Help: How Chrome protects your autofill and password data.
