Downloading an on-device language model can prepare a device for offline recognition, but it does not guarantee that Gboard will use that model or automatically switch between Hindi and English. The exact options depend on the phone, Android version, and recognition feature.
Start dictating with Gboard
- Install or open Gboard on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open an app with a text field and tap the field to bring up the keyboard.
- Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard toolbar. When prompted, speak your text.
- If you need to change the active language, enable the relevant languages in Gboard. In the voice toolbar, tap the language abbreviation at the lower left and choose a language. Google also documents holding the space bar to switch keyboards in its Advanced voice typing help.
Gboard’s voice-typing instructions note that talk-to-text does not work with every language; some instructions apply to Android 7.0 and newer. Spoken commands such as “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” and “new paragraph” may work for punctuation and formatting, but punctuation availability also varies by language.
Prepare an offline recognition language
For Android 13 and newer, Google documents this route for adding a language for Voice Access offline recognition:
Settings > System > Language & region > Speech > On-device recognition > Add a language

Choose the language you want to download. Phone manufacturers and Android builds can use different menu names or omit the option. Google’s instructions concern Voice Access; having a language available there does not by itself establish that Gboard’s keyboard microphone will use the same model. Test the specific dictation feature you intend to use.
Know what “offline” and “automatic switching” mean
Android apps can request offline recognition, but the platform treats it as an optional preference. In the RecognizerIntent API reference, Android says, “Depending on the recognizer implementation, these values may have no effect.” In other words, an offline preference is not a guarantee that a particular keyboard session will remain on-device.

Android’s recognition-support API distinguishes languages already installed on-device from those available online, pending download, or supported on-device but not yet downloaded. These categories matter: a language offered for online recognition is not necessarily ready for offline use.
Android added optional language-detection and automatic language-switching intent extras at API level 34. They are platform capabilities, not necessarily controls exposed by Gboard. A recognizer may not implement them, and switching may fail if the required language models have not been downloaded. For a user, this means that seamless Hindi-English switching mid-sentence should be treated as device- and feature-dependent, not assumed.

Choose the dictation approach that fits

The Advanced voice typing language list applies to that feature only; it does not show that Hindi is unsupported by all Gboard dictation or Android recognizers. Google’s current details are in its Advanced voice typing help.

- In Gboard settings, enable Hindi and English if both are offered, then try selecting each from the voice toolbar.
- If your Android version exposes On-device recognition, download the languages you need and confirm that the option is available after the download.
- Test a short passage that naturally mixes your Hindi and English, including any names or terms you commonly dictate. Check whether the recognizer keeps both languages, whether switching requires a manual selection, and whether it works with the phone offline.
- If offline dictation does not work, reconnect and check for language downloads or updates, confirm the active Gboard language, and try the relevant feature again. If Hindi is not offered for that feature, use a supported language mode or another recognizer that explicitly supports Hindi.
The official documentation reviewed does not provide a Hindi-English accuracy benchmark or word-error rate. Your own short test is more useful than assuming accuracy based on a feature name. Likewise, a downloaded model or offline preference alone is not proof that a specific session processed speech only on the device; verify the exact app, setting, and recognizer behavior before relying on an on-device privacy assumption.
