You can use a spare iPhone or Android phone as a home camera by installing a camera app on it and viewing its live feed from a second supported device. With AlfredCamera, check that the old phone meets the camera-device requirements (Android 5.0 or later, or iOS 12 or later) and that your viewer meets its separate requirements (Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 15 or later). These are the vendor’s minimums, not a guarantee of smooth performance; confirm the app is available for both devices and test them before relying on the setup. What you need
- A spare phone that can connect to Wi-Fi and still supports the camera app.
- A second compatible phone or tablet to act as the viewer. AlfredCamera’s setup uses one device as the camera and another as the viewer. See its setup instructions.
- A reliable connection where you plan to place the camera. Remote viewing depends on internet access, so test the connection at that location. AlfredCamera describes remote viewing and motion alerts.
- A nearby outlet and compatible charging cable if the phone needs power where it will sit. An adjustable mount is optional; choose accessories that fit your device and location.
How to set up an old phone as a security camera
- Check compatibility on both devices. For AlfredCamera, the camera phone must run Android 5.0 or later or iOS 12 or later; the viewer must run Android 7.0 or later or iOS 15 or later. Check the app store on each device, since meeting an operating-system minimum does not ensure the app is available or performs well on a particular handset. AlfredCamera compatibility requirements.
- Install the app on the camera phone and viewer. Use the supported app-store version for each device.
- Sign in on both devices. AlfredCamera lists Google, Apple, and email as account sign-in options. Follow its setup guide.
- Pair the devices. Use the app’s pairing flow. AlfredCamera documents signing in to the same account or pairing with a QR code.
- Open the live feed and test the planned position. Check the picture, camera angle, Wi-Fi connection, and whether the phone can reach an outlet before mounting it. AlfredCamera recommends testing the feed before installation and considering Wi-Fi strength and outlet proximity. Placement guidance.
- Configure detection and alerts. If the app offers motion alerts, set detection zones and schedules to suit the area. Check the current controls on your devices rather than assuming every version has identical settings. AlfredCamera’s feature information.
Check storage, power, and safety
Storage for AlfredCamera recording features
AlfredCamera recommends at least 400 MB of internal storage on a mobile camera device for optimal performance when using Activity Detection and Continuous Recording. That figure applies to the vendor’s stated use case; it is not a general storage requirement for every app or recording mode. AlfredCamera Help Center.
Power and battery condition
Consider how the phone will be powered at its final location, and follow the device manufacturer’s charging guidance. The available guidance does not establish a universally safe charging duration, battery-health threshold, or temperature limit for old phones. Do not leave a damaged or swollen handset in use; stop using it if it behaves abnormally.
What an old-phone camera can and cannot do
A phone-camera app can provide a live view, remote access, and motion alerts when its features, account configuration, and network support them. AlfredCamera says it does not support third-party IP cameras or security systems. Check its support information.
