You can run a YouTube encoder on a Google Cloud VM in Mumbai or Delhi and send it a continuous stream using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. If you use Google’s managed Live Stream API instead, the India region listed for that service is Mumbai, not Delhi. Neither choice guarantees one uninterrupted 24-hour session: the managed API may restart an active channel after 24 hours, and a VM-based encoder needs its own monitoring and recovery plan.

Choose the Google Cloud approach

There are two different ways to use Google Cloud. A self-managed Compute Engine VM runs the encoder you configure and gives you control of its input, looping and restart behavior. The managed Live Stream API accepts an SRT or RTMP input, transcodes it to HLS or DASH, and can distribute output remotely over RTMP to YouTube. The API is not simply a VM in a different region: its supported locations and operating model are separate.

Consideration Compute Engine VM with an encoder Live Stream API
India region availability Mumbai and Delhi are listed Compute Engine regions. Mumbai is listed for the API; Delhi is not in the India locations checked.
Encoder and media handling You choose and operate an encoder such as FFmpeg or OBS. You are responsible for its input, loop, configuration and process supervision. Google’s managed service accepts SRT or RTMP, transcodes to HLS or DASH, and writes output files to Cloud Storage. Remote RTMP distribution can send output to YouTube.
Operational responsibility You monitor the VM, encoder process, media source, logs and recovery. You manage the API resources, inputs, channel, storage and distribution configuration, and still need monitoring and restart recovery.
24-hour behavior The supplied Google Cloud material does not guarantee VM uptime or a continuously connected YouTube session. Design and test process recovery. An active channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a state other than STOPPED or STOPPING.
Cost basis VM runtime, disk and other services can cost money; VM-to-YouTube data transfer is listed as having no charge. Charges depend on active-channel hours and remote distribution outputs, among other configuration details.

For a self-managed encoder, choose Mumbai or Delhi based on your deployment and operational needs. For the Live Stream API, use a region in that API’s supported locations; the India entry checked here is Mumbai. Google advises keeping the input endpoint, channel and Cloud Storage bucket close together. Resource locations cannot be changed after creation, so decide before provisioning. Region availability alone does not establish which option will be cheaper, faster for your audience or more resilient.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned launch.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. The encoder needs both to connect to YouTube.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your broadcast. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, logs or repositories; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, verify the selected stream and its preview in Live Control Room before you make the stream public or start the encoder.

YouTube’s current encoder workflow and stream-health guidance were accessed in 2026. Its first-time activation window is separate from Google Cloud provisioning: a ready VM does not remove a YouTube account’s activation wait.

Configure a VM encoder for YouTube

Provision for the actual workload

Create a Compute Engine VM in your chosen Indian region, install an RTMP-capable encoder, and make the source media available to it. There is no universally correct VM size established here: the required capacity depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate and encoder load. Measure the selected machine while it handles representative video and audio instead of assuming a particular shape will be sufficient.

For a prerecorded 24/7 stream, confirm that the media source remains accessible and that the encoder is configured to repeat or advance through the intended programming. The VM path gives you control over this behavior, but YouTube does not configure the playlist or restart the encoder for you.

Set the video and connection parameters

  • Protocol: Use the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, to encrypt the stream to and through Google’s servers.
  • Video codec: H.264.
  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The corresponding minimum settings are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM or input can sustain them.

Make sure the source feed and the VM’s sustained outbound throughput can support the chosen bitrate. Test with the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and representative motion; a static test image may not expose problems that appear with the real programme. Higher bitrate is not automatically better if the source, encoder or network cannot maintain it.

Start the stream and keep it recoverable

  1. Start the encoder on the VM with the selected media source, YouTube server URL and stream key.
  2. Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check the stream-health status and confirm that picture and audio are present before proceeding.
  3. Start the broadcast in YouTube’s workflow and verify that viewers can see the intended output.
  4. During operation, monitor the encoder process, source availability, logs, outbound connection and YouTube stream health. Set up alerting that reaches someone who can respond; a VM that is running does not prove the encoder or YouTube ingest is healthy.
  5. Test recovery before relying on the stream. Simulate an encoder or source interruption where practical, then confirm that the process restarts, reconnects with the correct key and resumes the intended content. Decide how you will detect a failed restart rather than relying on automatic process restart alone.

YouTube says broadcasts shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive. If a full replay matters, verify current archive behavior and consider dividing programming into shorter streams.

Account for the 24-hour Live Stream API boundary

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API quotas and limits documentation states that a live stream session lasts for 24 hours after a channel starts. After 24 hours in any StreamingState other than STOPPED or STOPPING, the channel may be restarted. Treat this as a recovery event to design for, not as a promise that a session will end cleanly or that viewers will see no interruption. Test what viewers see during a restart and monitor the channel and its distribution.

The API documentation lists a default regional allocation of up to 10 simultaneously running channels and up to 20 inputs, subject to project quotas that can change. Check the live quota for your project and region before building around those limits.

Estimate costs without mistaking transfer for a free stream

Google lists data transfer from a Compute Engine VM to YouTube among specified Google-product transfers with no charge. That does not make the VM free: compute runtime, disks, source storage, logging, monitoring and other services may still incur charges. Check current pricing for the exact region and configuration before deployment.

For the Live Stream API, an active channel can be billed hourly in any state other than STOPPED or STOPPING, including when it has no input. Each remote distribution stream is treated as an additional output, and distribution charges apply for the active-channel period even when that distribution is not currently sending. A useful estimate therefore needs the resolution, codec, active hours, number of outputs and current prices; there is no configuration-independent cost figure to quote.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded programming looping on YouTube without operating a VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.

The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for the service details, then start your free day.
