Yes, you can install PS5 game data on an external SSD, but you cannot play PS5 games directly from that USB drive. On a PS5, a compatible external SSD is USB extended storage: it is mainly an archive and transfer location. When you want to play a PS5 title, copy it back to the console’s internal storage or to a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
PS4 games are different: they can be launched directly from compatible USB extended storage. If your priority is keeping a large PS5 library installed and playable at all times, buy a PS5-compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD with suitable heat dissipation. If you mainly want to avoid redownloading games, an external SSD is simpler and portable.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| External USB SSD (USB extended storage) | Archiving PS5 games and playing PS4 games directly | 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum; SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later | PS5 and PS4 games; PS4 titles can launch from the drive | Oct 2026 |
| Internal M.2 NVMe SSD | Keeping PS5 games installed and playable | PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe; cited safety guide lists 250 GB–4 TB; compatible dimensions and heat dissipation required | PS5 and PS4 games; both can launch from the drive | Oct 2026 |
Can you install PS5 games to an external SSD?
Yes, but “install” has two meanings on PS5. The console can store PS5 game files on USB extended storage, yet Sony does not allow those games to launch from the USB device. The files must be copied to the PS5’s internal console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before the game will start.
This restriction applies to USB SSDs as well as USB hard drives. Choosing a faster SSD can make copying more convenient and may reduce load times for PS4 games stored externally, but it does not change the PS5-game launch rule. Sony’s current USB extended-storage guidance provides no universal SSD-versus-HDD load-time figure.

What an external SSD is good for
- Archiving: Move completed or less frequently played PS5 games off the internal drive to free space without deleting their local game data.
- Transfer: Copy a stored PS5 game back when you are ready to play instead of downloading it again.
- Direct PS4 play: PS4 games can remain on compatible USB extended storage while you play them.
- Portability: A single drive can rotate a library between play sessions, provided it is connected directly to the PS5 and used according to Sony’s storage rules.
What are the PS5 external-storage limits?
Sony’s USB extended-storage requirements set a clear capacity and connection range. A supported drive must provide at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB of usable storage, and it must use SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or faster.
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 250 GB minimum; 8 TB maximum for USB extended storage |
| USB performance class | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later |
| Connection | Connect the drive directly to the PS5; do not use a USB hub |
| Simultaneous drives | Two or more USB extended-storage drives cannot be used at the same time |
| Compatibility | Sony does not guarantee that every USB storage device will work, even if its headline capacity appears suitable |
The capacity figure is the drive’s advertised size, while the console’s formatted usable space will be lower after system formatting. The important buying check is that the model falls inside Sony’s 250 GB-to-8 TB range and meets the SuperSpeed requirement.
How do you set up an external SSD on a PS5?
Use a drive that contains no files you need to keep, because formatting it as USB extended storage erases its existing data. Have the PS5, the SSD, and a direct USB connection ready before starting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Connect the SSD directly to the PS5. Plug it into a compatible console USB port. Do not route it through a hub or another pass-through device.
- Format the new drive as USB extended storage. Follow the PS5’s on-screen formatting prompt. This process deletes everything currently on the SSD, so copy any personal files elsewhere first.
- Wait for formatting to finish. Do not unplug the drive while the console is preparing it.
- Choose where PS4 games are installed, if useful. USB extended storage can be selected as the installation location for PS4 games, allowing those titles to stay on the external SSD while they are played.
- Keep PS5 games on the drive as an archive. Move titles after installation when you need to reclaim internal space. They remain stored on the SSD until you copy them back.
Formatting is a one-time setup for that drive on the console, but it is not a way to make PS5 software directly executable from USB. The drive remains an extended-storage volume rather than an additional PS5 game-installation drive.
How do you move a PS5 game to and from the external SSD?
Moving a title uses the PS5’s built-in library controls. The same process works in reverse when you need to play an archived PS5 game.
- Open Game Library on the PS5.
- Highlight the PS5 game you want to transfer.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the external USB extended-storage drive as the destination when archiving, or select console storage or M.2 SSD storage when restoring the game for play.
- Confirm the move and leave the SSD connected until the copy completes.
A PS5 title on USB extended storage is therefore “installed” in the sense that its data is already present, but it is not in a playable location. Copying it back is faster than downloading the entire game again only when the stored files are still valid and complete.

Can you play PS5 games directly from an external SSD?
No. Sony’s rule is based on the storage connection, not on whether the external device is an SSD or a hard disk. A USB SSD can store the game, but the PS5 must copy the title to internal console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before launch.

It reduces the need to redownload large games, but anyone switching among several PS5 titles will need to allow time for each copy-back operation.
What is the best option for playing PS5 games from expanded storage?
A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD is the direct-play option. Sony says M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch both PS5 and PS4 games once the drive is installed correctly.
| Capability | External USB SSD | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Launch PS5 games | No; copy the game to console or M.2 storage first | Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s requirements |
| Launch PS4 games | Yes, directly from USB extended storage | Yes |
| Keeping PS5 games playable without transfers | No | Yes |
| Installation effort | Connect and format | Open the console’s expansion bay and install the drive with suitable heat dissipation |
| Best use | Archive and rotate a large library | Expand the permanently playable PS5 library |
What must an internal M.2 SSD support?
Compatibility is stricter than simply buying any NVMe drive. Sony’s requirements include the storage interface, physical fit, and heat management, and they can vary by console documentation and model.
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe support is required for the documented PS5 expansion route.
- Physical dimensions: The drive must fit the console’s supported length, width, and thickness, including any heatsink.
- Heat dissipation: Sony requires appropriate heat dissipation. A drive that fits electrically but lacks adequate cooling is not a safe compatibility assumption.
- Capacity: Sony’s cited safety guide lists 250 GB to 4 TB for the documented console generation. Check the current PlayStation support page and your exact PS5 model before purchasing, because documentation can differ.
Installing M.2 storage is more involved than attaching a USB SSD: the console’s expansion bay must be opened and the compatible module installed. The reward is that PS5 games can be downloaded, copied, and launched from that expanded storage without the USB copy-back step.
Is an external SSD faster than an external hard drive for PS5?
An SSD is a sensible external choice for portability and file transfers, but there is no single Sony-published benchmark that applies to every SSD, hard drive, game, and USB connection. Sony says a device with a faster specification may produce shorter load times for PS4 games stored on the external drive.

That statement should not be turned into a universal number or a promise of faster PS5 loading. PS5 games still have to be copied to internal or M.2 storage before they can launch, regardless of the external drive’s advertised speed.
How should you choose between an external SSD and an M.2 SSD?
Choose according to whether you need storage capacity or direct play more often.
Choose a PS5-compatible external SSD when you need an archive
- You want to keep a large collection without redownloading games.
- You are comfortable copying PS5 titles back before playing them.
- You want the simplest setup: connect the drive and format it as USB extended storage.
- You also have PS4 games that you want to launch directly from the external drive.
- You need a drive that can be disconnected and stored when it is not in use, while following the PS5’s safe-disconnection process.
Choose a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink when you need direct PS5 play
- You regularly switch among PS5 games and do not want a transfer step.
- You want PS5 games to download, install, and launch from expanded storage.
- You are willing to verify PCIe Gen4x4 support, physical dimensions, capacity limits, and heat dissipation for your exact console model.
- You are comfortable with the extra installation work required to open the expansion bay.
What happens to games when you back up or restore a PS5?
Games and apps stored on USB extended storage or M.2 expansion are not included in a normal PS5 console backup. A console restore therefore does not recreate those expanded-storage files from the backup itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After restoring a console, reconnect the relevant USB drive or reinstall the M.2 storage so the games and apps are available again. Keep the expansion device with the console backup if you need both parts of the setup after a recovery.
How do you avoid data loss with PS5 extended storage?
Most avoidable problems come from treating the SSD like a disposable thumb drive. The PS5 needs to finish transfers and complete its safe-disconnection process before the cable is removed.
- Never unplug the drive while formatting, moving, copying, or deleting games.
- Do not connect the drive through a USB hub.
- Use only one USB extended-storage drive at a time.
- Keep a copy of important personal files elsewhere before formatting a new drive.
- If you restore the console, remember that expanded-storage games are outside the normal backup set.
Improper disconnection can cause data loss, corruption, or damage to the storage device. If a transfer is interrupted, reconnect the drive and allow the PS5 to check it before attempting another move.

- Reconnect the SSD directly to the console, removing any USB hub or intermediary.
- Confirm that the drive is at least 250 GB and no larger than 8 TB.
- Verify that its USB specification is SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
- Check whether another USB extended-storage drive is already active and disconnect it safely if necessary.
- If the drive is new or was used for another purpose, format it as USB extended storage after moving any files you need to keep.
- If the device still fails, treat it as a compatibility issue: Sony does not guarantee every USB storage model, even when the capacity and speed labels appear correct.
Do not format a drive containing the only copy of personal data. PS5 extended-storage formatting is destructive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How we picked the storage options
The two options above are separated by the rule that matters most: whether PS5 games can launch from the storage location. The comparison uses Sony’s stated USB capacity and speed limits, its direct-play support for M.2 expansion, the installation effort, the copy-back requirement, and the backup and safety caveats documented for each storage type. No universal SSD-versus-HDD performance figure is claimed because Sony does not publish one for all games and devices.
Frequently asked questions
Can one external SSD hold both PS4 and PS5 games?
Yes. USB extended storage can contain PS4 and PS5 game data on the same compatible drive. PS4 titles can run from that location, while PS5 titles remain archived until copied to console or M.2 storage.
Will buying a very fast USB SSD remove the PS5 copy-back requirement?
No. The restriction is tied to USB extended storage itself, so a faster specification does not turn the drive into a direct-launch location for PS5 software. Faster external hardware may help with PS4 load times or transfer convenience, but it does not change where a PS5 game must reside to start.
Can I use two USB extended-storage drives at once for a bigger library?
No. Sony’s guidance does not support using two or more USB extended-storage drives simultaneously. You can rotate drives, but only one can be active under that rule.

Is an M.2 SSD required if I only want to save PS5 games?
No. An external SSD handles storage and later transfer of PS5 games without an M.2 installation. The M.2 route becomes necessary when you want those PS5 games to remain on expanded storage and launch without being copied back.
