You can use an AI writing tutor for focused feedback without giving it control of your essay: first check your course rules, then ask it to identify questions or potential problems—not to supply replacement prose. You remain responsible for checking its observations and making any revisions yourself.

Check your course rules before using a tutor

Permission depends on the assignment and instructor. Read the assignment instructions and syllabus for rules about AI feedback, editing, and disclosure. If they do not clearly cover the kind of help you want, ask your instructor before pasting in your work.

University guidance illustrates why checking matters: Penn notes that individual courses may set narrower rules, Emory directs students to ask their instructor when uncertain, and UVA says policies vary. Southampton’s guidance distinguishes limited study-support examples such as spelling or grammar feedback from asking AI to write or rewrite assessed work, which it lists as unacceptable in its context. Those examples are not a universal permission for your course.

Give the tool a bounded reader’s role

Ask for observations you can assess, not a finished version you can submit. Useful requests focus on one question at a time:

  • “Which sentence is hardest to follow, and what question did you have as a reader? Don’t rewrite it.”
  • “Point out where I make a claim that may need evidence. Don’t add facts or sources.”
  • “Tell me whether the order of these points is clear, and explain what felt out of place. Don’t reorganize or rewrite the essay.”
  • “Identify possible grammar or spelling issues and explain each one without changing the text.”

These are practical prompt examples, not tested prompts or university-approved wording. Adapt them to your assignment’s rules. The University of Delaware Writing Center describes possible uses including clarity edits, but that center’s guidance does not determine what your instructor permits. Its generative AI policy statement also discusses risks such as inaccurate information, bias, and sharing text.

Evaluate each suggestion instead of accepting it automatically

AI feedback is a starting point for your judgment, not proof that something is wrong. For each observation, decide whether it fits your assignment, your intended meaning, and your evidence.

  • Check factual claims: Compare them with the original sources you relied on. Penn advises validating AI-created content against trusted first-party sources.
  • Check citations: Open every cited source and confirm it exists and supports the claim. AI can produce fabricated or distorted citations.
  • Protect your meaning and voice: Reject advice that changes your argument, oversimplifies your reasoning, or makes the writing sound less like you.
  • Keep the assignment in view: A suggestion can sound polished and still be irrelevant to the prompt or inappropriate for the required genre.

The University of Southampton cautions that AI systems “often get things wrong, include biased information, and create generic, bland text that does not show the knowledge, understanding and critical thinking your university studies give you.” That is why a fluent answer still needs checking.

Make any revision yourself

After reviewing the feedback, close the tool and revise in your own words. You might clarify a sentence, explain a connection between ideas, or add evidence from a source you have verified. Do not paste in replacement paragraphs simply because they sound polished. UVA’s guidance says submitted work should reflect the student’s own understanding and abilities.

A useful test is whether you can explain why you made each change and defend the claims in your essay. If you cannot, revisit the passage and your sources before submitting.

Follow disclosure rules and protect your text

Keep a brief record of the assistance you used so you can follow your course’s citation or attribution requirements. Ask your instructor what to disclose and how; requirements vary, so do not assume that a tool’s acknowledgment feature or a particular citation format will satisfy them.

Before pasting anything, consider what the text contains and how the service handles it. Avoid sharing sensitive information, unpublished or proprietary material, or another person’s writing unless you have permission and understand the service’s data protections. Penn’s guidance advises users to understand service data practices and avoid exposing sensitive information without appropriate protections.
