To capture a website in dark mode with an AI agent, tell it the URL, emulate a dark color scheme, navigate to the page, complete any steps needed to reach the intended state, and save and inspect the screenshot. With Playwright, set colorScheme: 'dark' on the browser context or call page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'dark' }) before capturing. This requests dark mode; it does not force every site to use it.
What to tell the AI agent
Give the agent enough detail to reproduce the exact state you want and verify the result. Include:
- The page URL and, if relevant, how to start or access the app.
- The target viewport or device dimensions.
- A request to emulate a dark color scheme.
- Any steps needed to reach the page or enable a site-specific theme toggle.
- Whether to capture the viewport, a particular element, or the full page, and the filename and format.
- An instruction to inspect the saved image and report if the site did not actually render in dark mode.
For example: “Open [URL] at [desktop or mobile dimensions]. Emulate a dark color scheme, then [steps to reach the target page or state]. Capture [viewport, element, or full page] as [filename and format]. Inspect the saved screenshot and report whether the page rendered in dark mode. If it did not, explain what blocked the expected appearance. Do not report success unless the file was saved and reviewed.”
Capture a dark-mode screenshot with Playwright
Playwright’s browser context can emulate the user’s color-scheme preference. Create the context with colorScheme: 'dark' before opening the page, then navigate, wait for the content to settle, and save the screenshot. })();networkidle waits for network activity to settle, but some sites keep connections open or load content later. If navigation times out, use a less restrictive readiness condition such as domcontentloaded, then wait for a meaningful selector or a short, deliberate delay before capture. For a site with its own theme toggle, locate and activate it after navigation; setting the color scheme alone cannot operate a site-specific control.
Set the preference after creating the page
If you already have a page, call page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'dark' }) before navigating or capturing it:

Use emulateMedia when changing the preference on an existing page. In either case, check the pixels: the site must respond to the preference for the result to look dark.

Choose what the agent captures
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, along with PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Its documented default is PNG, and without a filename the CLI uses a timestamped file in the output directory. See Playwright screenshots and PDF documentation.

Use type: 'jpeg' or type: 'webp' when you want those image formats and choose a filename with the matching extension. Playwright also supports high-resolution capture; note that its documentation warns high-resolution image coordinates do not correspond to CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. That matters if the agent uses screenshot coordinates for later clicks.

Have the agent inspect the page and verify the image
Use page structure to find controls and rendered pixels to assess appearance. Playwright’s command documentation distinguishes accessibility snapshots, which help with interaction and structure, from screenshots, which show visual layout, canvas or chart content, and bugs: Playwright command line documentation.
The agent should confirm the image exists, open or inspect it, and look for signs that the intended state was not reached: a light background, a theme toggle still set to light, an error page, a loading skeleton, or content missing below the fold. A successful dark preference setting is not proof that the site rendered in dark mode.

For authenticated pages, do not assume an agent-opened browser shares your normal sign-in. VS Code’s documentation says agent-opened sessions use isolated ephemeral storage; to use an existing signed-in tab, explicitly share that tab.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will dark color-scheme emulation make every website dark?
No. It signals a dark preference to the site. A page that ignores that preference may remain light, and a site-specific theme toggle may need separate interaction.
Can an AI agent screenshot a page that requires my login?
It depends on the browser session. VS Code documents that agent-opened sessions have isolated ephemeral storage; share an existing tab explicitly if you need its authenticated state.
