To save an AI-agent browser screenshot as a real WebP image, select WebP explicitly: use playwright-cli screenshot --type=webp, pass type: "webp" to Playwright MCP, or call the Playwright Page API with type: "webp" and a .webp filename. Without a format option or a recognized filename, Playwright defaults to PNG. Choose whether you need the visible viewport, one element, or the full page before capturing.
Choose how the agent will take the screenshot
Playwright offers three practical routes: its agent CLI, its MCP screenshot tool, or code using the Page API. The right choice depends on how your agent is set up and whether the image should be returned to the agent or saved for another process. The documented interfaces differ in their options, so there is no universal best choice.

Set up the capture before asking the agent to save it
1. Open the page and decide when it is ready
Have the agent navigate to the target URL, then wait for the page state your screenshot requires. A fixed delay is not guaranteed to work for every site: pages may load images, render content, or update after navigation. The screenshot documentation does not prescribe one universal wait strategy, so choose a condition suited to the page and workflow.
2. Decide what should appear in the image
- Viewport: captures the currently visible browser area. In the Page API, omit
fullPage. - Full page: includes content below the fold. The CLI uses
--full-page; MCP usesfullPage: true; the Page API usesfullPage: true. - One element: use the CLI or MCP target option, or the Page API’s element screenshot method. In MCP, do not combine
targetwithfullPage: true.
3. Choose resolution and quality
CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Device scale captures device pixels and can make the image larger on a high-DPI display; the CLI option is --hires, while MCP accepts scale: "device". In the Page API, WebP quality 100 is lossless; lower values are lossy. File-size savings depend on the page and settings, so measure your own output if size is important.

Capture WebP with the Playwright agent CLI
In the active Playwright agent CLI browser session, run:
playwright-cli screenshot --type=webp --full-page --filename=page.webpThis saves a full-page WebP named page.webp. Remove --full-page for the current viewport. Use the target option documented for your installed CLI when capturing a particular element. To capture at device-pixel resolution, add --hires. The CLI also supports PNG and JPEG; choosing --type=webp avoids relying on extension inference.
Capture WebP with Playwright MCP
In an MCP client connected to Playwright, call browser_take_screenshot with WebP selected. For example, the tool arguments can include:

}Use fullPage: true for the scrollable page, or supply a target to capture an element instead. Those two choices cannot be combined. Omit fullPage and target for the viewport. When no filename is supplied, the documented tool behavior includes returning the image inline; consult the MCP tool documentation for how its current version handles saving. Explicitly request type: "webp" rather than assuming the client will infer the intended format.
Capture WebP with Playwright’s Page API
If the agent can run JavaScript against an existing Playwright page, this example saves a full-page WebP at quality 100:

Troubleshoot common WebP capture problems
The file is PNG despite a .webp name
Set the format explicitly: use --type=webp in the CLI, type: "webp" in MCP, or type: "webp" in the Page API. Playwright’s documented default is PNG when neither the type nor a filename selects another format.
The screenshot misses content or shows a loading state
Wait for the page state that matters before capturing. A successful navigation does not guarantee that every image or dynamically rendered section is ready. Use a suitable readiness condition for the particular page rather than assuming one delay works everywhere.

The output dimensions are unexpected
Check whether the capture uses CSS scale or device scale. Device scale captures device pixels and may create larger dimensions on a high-DPI display. If you need consistent CSS-pixel dimensions, use CSS scale where the interface supports it.
The full-page and element options conflict
For Playwright MCP, choose either fullPage: true or target; the tool does not allow both in one capture. Capture the element separately if you need that specific region.
The WebP file is larger than expected
Quality 100 is lossless in the Page API, while lower quality settings are lossy. If file size matters more than lossless output, try a lower quality and compare the resulting image; the documentation does not guarantee a particular reduction.

The CLI command or options are not recognized
Check that the Playwright agent CLI is installed and that its screenshot options match the version in your environment. Documentation interfaces can change; compare the command with the current CLI screenshot reference.

Ask the agent to report the output filename or path so the next step can locate it. When reliability matters, confirm that the file exists and inspect it to check the framing and content. The cited Playwright documentation describes format selection and output paths but does not establish one universal file-validation command; use the checks appropriate to your runtime and downstream workflow.
If the screenshot is for visual comparison, keep the capture conditions consistent, including viewport and scale. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance discusses screenshot snapshots, but it does not imply that WebP is appropriate for every comparison workflow; see Playwright visual comparisons.
