The simplest way to use a PS5 DualSense controller on a Windows PC is with a USB-C data cable. Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 support the controller over USB and Bluetooth, but USB is the better first choice: it is easier to troubleshoot and is required for PC games that support DualSense haptic feedback. Adaptive triggers, touchpad features, gyro controls, and PlayStation button prompts depend on the individual game.

For wireless play, pair the controller through Windows Bluetooth settings. If your desktop has no built-in Bluetooth, add a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. The instructions below cover USB, Bluetooth, Steam, non-Steam games, firmware updates, feature limitations, and the most reliable troubleshooting order.

What you need

  • A PS5 DualSense wireless controller if you do not already own one.
  • A USB-C data cable for the initial setup, firmware updates, or wired play. A charge-only cable may not allow Windows to detect the controller.
  • For wireless play: a Windows PC with Bluetooth, or a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC if your desktop does not have built-in Bluetooth.
  • Windows 11, or Windows 10 64-bit if you are using an older installation. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; Windows 11 is the current supported Windows target as of August 12, 2026.

These are general compatibility requirements, not endorsements of a particular cable, adapter, or controller model. Confirm that any accessory supports data transfer where required.

Method 1: Connect the DualSense with USB

  1. Plug the USB-C end of the cable into the port on the top of the DualSense.
  2. Plug the other end into the Windows PC.
  3. Wait briefly for Windows and the game launcher to detect the controller.
  4. Start the game and open its controller or input settings.
  5. Select the controller if the game requires manual selection, then test the sticks, buttons, and triggers.

USB is the recommended starting point because it avoids Bluetooth pairing problems and gives compatible PC games access to DualSense haptic feedback. Sony states that haptic feedback on PC requires a USB connection. Adaptive triggers also require support from the individual game; connecting by USB does not enable them universally.

The DualSense microphone and speaker may appear in Windows when the game supports them. The controller’s headset jack requires a wired PC connection. A controller being visible to Windows does not guarantee that a particular game will use its microphone, speaker, headset output, haptics, or adaptive triggers.

If USB does not work

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the cable.
  2. Try another USB port and, if available, another known-good USB-C data cable.
  3. Restart the PC.
  4. Update the controller firmware with Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application.
  5. Test the controller in another compatible game or in Steam’s controller settings.

If the cable only charges the controller, Windows may not detect it as a gamepad. The cable must carry data, not just power.

Method 2: Pair the DualSense over Bluetooth in Windows 11

  1. Turn off the controller. If the player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until the light turns off.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable.
  3. Press and hold the Create button and the PS button together.
  4. Keep holding them until the light bar begins flashing.
  5. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  6. Turn Bluetooth on, select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the DualSense when it appears.

After pairing, Windows should reconnect to the controller when it is nearby and available. If the controller does not appear, make sure it is not still connected to the PS5 or another device, and confirm that the light bar is flashing rather than steadily lit.

Desktops without built-in Bluetooth need a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC. The adapter must be installed and enabled in Windows before pairing.

Pair the DualSense in Windows 10

Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit as compatible with DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections. The Windows 10 Bluetooth path is:

Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth

Put the controller into pairing mode first by holding Create + PS until the light bar flashes, then select it from the list. Although the controller can work with Windows 10, Windows 10 itself reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Use Windows 11 where possible for a currently supported operating system.

Update DualSense firmware on a PC

Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application can update DualSense controller software on a Windows PC. Updating is worthwhile before deeper troubleshooting and can resolve compatibility or connection problems.

  1. Install and open PlayStation Accessories from Sony.
  2. Connect the DualSense to the PC with a USB data cable.
  3. Follow the application’s instructions to check for and install a firmware update.
  4. Keep the controller connected and do not shut down the PC while the update is in progress.
  5. Reconnect the controller to the game after the update finishes.

Do not disconnect the controller during the firmware update. If an update is interrupted, reconnect it by USB and follow the application’s recovery instructions rather than repeatedly starting and stopping the process.

Use the DualSense with Steam

Steam supports Sony DualSense controllers, including in Big Picture mode. However, controller support is a property of the individual game: a controller appearing in Steam does not mean every PC game supports gamepad input.

Check whether Steam sees the controller

  1. Connect the DualSense by USB or pair it with Bluetooth.
  2. Open Steam and go to its controller settings. The exact layout can vary slightly with Steam updates.
  3. Confirm that the DualSense appears as an available controller.
  4. Check the game’s store or library information for controller support.

Choose native support or Steam Input

Open the game’s Properties > Controller settings. Leave the default Steam Input setting in place first. If the game does not detect the controller, enable Steam Input for that game and test again.

When a game has native DualSense support, native input is usually preferable. It is more likely to preserve PlayStation button prompts and expose features such as haptics or adaptive triggers. Steam Input can translate controller input for games that do not natively support the DualSense, but it may produce Xbox-style prompts or omit DualSense-specific functions.

Some games support PlayStation controllers over USB but not Bluetooth, or support ordinary button input without supporting haptics and adaptive triggers. If Steam Input makes the game playable but the prompts or advanced features are wrong, compare the game’s native and Steam Input settings and use USB.

Use the DualSense with non-Steam games

Compatibility with games launched through Epic Games Store, Xbox PC, standalone launchers, or other platforms depends on the game and its input implementation. A controller working in Windows or Steam does not guarantee support in a non-Steam game.

First, connect the controller before launching the game, then check the game’s input settings. If the game has a controller-support option, enable it and restart the game. For a specific game, the publisher’s support documentation is the best source of compatibility information. Epic’s general guidance is that third-party controller problems may need to be handled by the game’s developer or publisher.

When an input mapper may help

Some older or PC-focused games expect an Xbox-style XInput controller rather than a PlayStation HID controller. In that case, an input mapper such as DS4Windows may be able to expose the DualSense as a virtual gamepad. DS4Windows describes support for DualSense controllers on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use an input mapper only as a fallback. Download it from a legitimate project distribution channel, and do not run multiple controller-mapping layers at once. Steam Input, another mapper, and a game-specific emulator can create duplicate virtual controllers, resulting in double inputs, menus that move twice, or buttons that appear stuck. Disable unused mapping tools before testing.

What features work on PC?

Feature What to expect
Basic buttons and sticks Generally available when Windows and the game support the controller.
USB connection Recommended for setup and troubleshooting; required for PC haptic feedback.
Bluetooth Useful for wireless play, but individual games may support fewer features or only USB.
Haptic feedback Requires USB on PC and support from the game.
Adaptive triggers Available only in games that implement the feature; USB is the safer connection choice.
Touchpad and gyro Depend on the game’s input implementation and may need native DualSense support.
PlayStation button prompts Depend on the game. Steam Input or XInput emulation may show Xbox prompts instead.
Built-in microphone and speaker May be available when supported by the Windows game or application.
Headset jack Requires a wired PC connection.

The important distinction is between Windows detecting the controller and a game implementing DualSense features. The first does not guarantee the second.

Bluetooth connection problems: fix them in this order

  1. Test USB first. This separates a controller or game problem from a Bluetooth problem.
  2. Charge the controller. Also make sure it is not actively connected to the PS5 or another paired device.
  3. Remove and pair again. In Windows Bluetooth settings, remove the DualSense, put it back into pairing mode with Create + PS, and add it again.
  4. Update firmware. Use PlayStation Accessories over USB.
  5. Restart everything. Restart Windows, reconnect the controller, and launch the game only after the controller is available.
  6. Check Steam Input. For Steam games, inspect the game’s Properties > Controller settings and test the default and enabled Steam Input modes.
  7. Reduce interference. Keep the controller and Bluetooth adapter away from unshielded USB 3.0 devices, hubs, and cables. USB 3.0 interference can disrupt Bluetooth.
  8. Reset the controller. Use the small reset button on the rear of the DualSense, then repeat the USB connection, firmware update, and pairing process.

If the controller remains unresponsive after a reset, current firmware, and testing with a direct USB connection, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs or support route. Replacing the controller should be a last step after ruling out the cable, USB port, firmware, game compatibility, and Bluetooth adapter.

  • You want wireless play: use Bluetooth, provided the PC has Bluetooth and the game supports the required connection.
  • You want haptics: use USB and verify that the game specifically supports DualSense haptics.
  • The Steam game does not detect it: check controller support, then try that game’s Steam Input setting.
  • The non-Steam game expects Xbox input: try the game’s own controller options first, then consider one input mapper.
  • Nothing detects the controller: test another data cable and USB port, update firmware, reset the controller, and retest before buying replacement hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a PS5 DualSense controller to a Windows PC without a cable?

Yes. Pair it through Windows Bluetooth settings by holding Create + PS until the light bar flashes. Your PC must have Bluetooth; desktops without it need a USB Bluetooth adapter.

Why does my DualSense work in Windows but not in a PC game?

Windows detection does not guarantee game support. The game may not support controllers, may expect Xbox/XInput input, or may require Steam Input. Check the game’s controller settings and compatibility information.

Do DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers work on PC?

They work only in selected games. Sony states that PC haptic feedback requires USB, while adaptive triggers depend on game support. Bluetooth may provide basic input but not every advanced feature.

Why is Steam showing Xbox button prompts?

Steam Input or the game may be translating the DualSense into an Xbox-style virtual controller. Native DualSense support is more likely to show PlayStation prompts and expose DualSense-specific features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Bluetooth keeps disconnecting?

Test USB, charge the controller, remove and re-pair it in Windows, update firmware, restart the PC, and move the Bluetooth adapter away from unshielded USB 3.0 devices and hubs. Reset the controller if the problem continues.

The Bottom Line

Use a USB-C data cable first: it is the most dependable connection and the one to use for PC haptics. Pair over Bluetooth when you want wireless play, but expect feature and compatibility differences between games. If a game does not recognize the controller, check native support and Steam Input before installing an input mapper.
