You can use podcast files stored in Google Drive in a YouTube Live broadcast, but you cannot connect a Drive folder directly to YouTube and have it become a live playlist. Drive holds the files; playback or automation software on a computer must play them in order and send one continuous program feed through an encoder to YouTube Live.

How the Drive-to-Live workflow works

A YouTube video playlist is a collection of uploaded videos viewers can play on YouTube. A YouTube Live event instead receives one encoded audio/video feed from an encoder. A Drive folder supplies the source files, not that live feed. The bridge is a playback setup that can read the episodes, play them in your chosen order, and output a continuous program for the encoder.

Google’s official documentation covers Drive folder access and Drive for desktop, while YouTube’s documentation covers encoder feeds. Those pages do not document an automatic conversion from a Drive folder into a YouTube Live playlist. The precise playback, ordering, looping, and unattended-recovery steps depend on the software you choose, so verify those behaviors with a test broadcast.

Prepare the podcast files in Google Drive

Check file access and permissions

On the computer that will play the episodes, sign in to the Google account that has access to the folder. Google Drive folder permissions apply to contained files and subfolders, and items added later inherit the folder’s permissions. Confirm that the playback account can open every episode. Avoid broadening sharing access just to make playback work unless you understand who will be able to access the folder and its contents.

Choose streaming or mirroring in Drive for desktop

Drive for desktop can stream files from the cloud or mirror My Drive to the computer. Streaming generally uses less local disk space, but playback depends on internet access and the files being available as they are accessed. Mirroring keeps a local copy of My Drive and uses more storage; it can be preferable when you want the source files locally available during playback. Choose based on your disk capacity and connection reliability, then confirm your playback software can read the files in that setup.

Check the episodes and order

Make sure the chosen playback software supports each file’s format and can play the episodes in the sequence you want. Decide whether the broadcast should stop after the last episode or repeat, and test that behavior in the software itself. The Drive folder’s file order does not, by itself, establish a live playlist order or repeat rule.

Enable and schedule YouTube Live

Confirm channel eligibility in advance

YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed in 2026, says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the date you plan to broadcast rather than leaving it until the last minute.

Create or schedule the event

In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule an event if you want a stable watch page to share ahead of time. YouTube says a scheduled stream can be shared and viewers can receive reminders. The exact Studio labels can change, so follow the current live-stream setup flow in your account.

Connect playback to YouTube through an encoder

  1. Choose the playback and encoding setup. Use playback or automation software that can play the selected files in order and produce the audio/video output you want to broadcast. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; it does not prescribe a particular playback application for this Drive-folder workflow.
  2. Get the ingest details from YouTube Studio. In the event’s encoder setup, locate the stream URL and stream key.
  3. Enter them in the encoder. Put the URL in the encoder’s server or URL field and the key in its stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your event. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  4. Configure output for your intended quality. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe settings depend on the chosen output and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Use YouTube’s current settings table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.

For the correct current settings and setup guidance, consult YouTube’s live streaming encoder settings and YouTube’s live streaming tips. YouTube recommends keeping total outgoing bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the required total bitrate. That is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Test the complete chain before the event. Play a representative episode from the Drive setup, send it through the encoder, and check the Live Control Room preview for sound and any intended visuals.
  2. Check stream health and access. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages, verify the event can be reached as intended, and confirm that the audio is clear and the playback sequence behaves correctly.
  3. Start the encoder in time for the scheduled event. Watch the preview and stream health while the broadcast is running. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring quality.
  4. Stop the encoder when the broadcast is over. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an archive, keep the broadcast below that documented threshold.

Choose the trade-offs that fit your broadcast

Cloud streaming or local mirroring for Drive files

Drive’s streaming mode saves local disk space but relies on a reliable internet connection while files are accessed. Mirroring My Drive consumes local storage to keep a full local copy. Neither setting creates the YouTube feed; both are ways to make the source files available to your playback setup.

Software or hardware encoder

YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders. A software encoder is an application-based route; a hardware encoder is a separate device-based route. YouTube’s documentation does not name one as universally best for this use case, so choose according to your existing equipment, desired production control, and ability to run the full playback-to-encoder chain reliably.

Scheduled event or immediate stream

A scheduled event is useful when you want to share a watch page and let viewers set reminders. An immediate stream avoids advance scheduling when you are ready to broadcast now. In either case, the encoder still needs the event’s ingest URL and key.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The playback software cannot open an episode: check that the signed-in Drive account has access, the file is available in the selected streaming or mirroring mode, and the playback software supports its format.
  • The episodes play in the wrong order or do not repeat: set order and repeat behavior in the playback or automation software, not in YouTube Live or the Drive folder. Test through the end of the list before relying on unattended playback.
  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The stream has health warnings or drops: compare total outgoing bitrate with available upload bandwidth, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check the connection and encoder settings. Test again while monitoring the Live Control Room.
  • Live streaming is unavailable for the channel: check verification and any live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
  • The archive is missing: YouTube’s encoder guide describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that same automatic archive behavior for streams at or beyond 12 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud
