A burner wallet limits the funds exposed during an experiment; it does not prove that an app is legitimate or safe. Connecting, signing, and approving token access are different actions, so review each request before proceeding.
What a burner wallet does—and does not do
Here, “burner wallet” means a separate wallet account or address reserved for experiments. The sources cited do not define it as a formal wallet category or standard. Its practical value is containment: if you interact with a risky app, you have limited the funds and permissions associated with that experiment rather than using your primary wallet.
Separation is not a safety certificate. A malicious dApp can still deceive you, and a small balance does not make a signature or token approval harmless. Treat the burner as a way to reduce exposure, not as a way to make unknown software trustworthy.
Set up the test wallet and find the dApp
- Create a separate account or address. Use it only for experiments and keep its balance low. Never enter your primary wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys into an unfamiliar page, extension, or tool.
- Fund it only with what you can afford to lose. Consider both the test funds and the network fees needed to transact or later revoke approvals.
- Navigate from an official project source. Check the exact domain against the project’s official channels rather than relying on an unsolicited link, search result, or lookalike name. MetaMask’s trust signals can provide context, but a missing verified badge does not prove a site is dangerous, and a trust signal is not an endorsement or guarantee.
MetaMask explains its trust-signal and security-alert limitations in How to manage security alerts to protect your wallet. Treat alerts as one input, not a substitute for checking the URL and request yourself.

Check the network and understand each wallet request
Before interacting, confirm the wallet is on the network you intend to use. Then distinguish what the dApp is asking you to do:
- Connect: This can reveal your public address, balances, and activity to the dApp. It is not the same as authorizing token transfers.
- Sign: Read the message or transaction details. Do not sign a request you cannot explain, or sign merely to clear a prompt.
- Approve tokens: This grants a contract permission to interact with specified tokens. Depending on the allowance, the permission may outlast the session and permit token movement.
- Send a transaction: Check the chain, destination, asset, amount, and any displayed effects before confirming.
Coinbase explains the distinction between dApp connections and token approvals, as well as approval risks, in Manage dapp permissions and token approvals.

Use transaction previews carefully
A transaction simulation is a test run of a transaction. A preview may estimate balance changes and help you spot an unexpected result, but it is not proof that the real transaction will behave the same way. MetaMask warns that ordinary off-chain simulations can be deceived by “red pill” attacks: a malicious contract may appear benign in simulation and act differently when the transaction executes.
MetaMask also describes enforced on-chain simulation, designed to revert a transaction if execution differs from its simulation. Availability, supported networks, and wallet features can change, so check the current documentation rather than assuming your wallet or chain has this protection. Even with enforced simulation, do not treat an unfamiliar dApp as safe solely because a preview looks normal. See What are transaction simulations?.

Limit token approvals and avoid unexplained signatures
Be especially cautious about unlimited token allowances. Coinbase warns that a malicious or compromised approved contract may use an unlimited allowance to withdraw the full balance of the token it can access. If the wallet or dApp offers an appropriate limited-amount option, authorize only what you understand and need. If the request is unclear, cancel rather than signing through it.
- Check which token and contract the approval concerns.
- Check whether the allowance is limited or unlimited, where that information is shown.
- Do not assume that disconnecting the site removes an approval.
- Decline approvals whose purpose or scope you cannot explain.
Disconnect the dApp and review approvals afterward
When you are done, disconnect from dApps you do not plan to use. Then separately inspect token approvals and revoke any you no longer need. Disconnecting ends the wallet connection; it does not necessarily remove an on-chain token allowance. Approvals persist until revoked or used up, and revoking one is an on-chain transaction that requires a network fee.
