For routine maintenance, use Settings > Windows Update to check for audio driver updates, install any that apply, and restart your PC. If sound stopped working right after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver in Device Manager instead. If the installation seems incomplete or rollback is unavailable, uninstall the audio device and restart so Windows can install it again.
These actions do different things: an update installs a newer compatible driver, a rollback returns to an earlier version when one is available, and a reinstall removes the current device installation so Windows can set it up again. Choose the procedure that matches when the problem began; changing drivers repeatedly is not the best first response to every sound problem.
The same workflow applies whether the symptom is silent speakers, headphones that do not appear, or the message “No audio output device is installed.” First establish whether Windows still detects the audio device, then choose the least disruptive procedure that fits the timing of the failure.
Which audio-driver fix should I try first?
Choose based on whether sound currently works and what changed. Windows Update is Microsoft’s recommended route for getting current audio drivers; rollback is for a problem that began after an update; reinstall is a useful next step when an installation may be incomplete or updating did not resolve the issue.

Device names, menu labels, and available options can vary by PC and Windows build. Use the steps below as the standard Windows 11 paths, and follow the wording shown on your device when it differs.
Before changing anything
Note what changed and what Windows currently shows. If sound stopped immediately after Windows installed a driver, rollback is more informative than repeatedly installing newer packages. If the device is present but the wrong speakers or headphones are selected, a driver operation may not be necessary at all.
- Save open documents before uninstalling a device or restarting. A restart is part of the reinstall procedure.
- Identify whether the problem affects built-in speakers, a headphone jack, a monitor, or another audio output.
- Open Sound settings and note whether the expected device appears under Output.
- In Device Manager, note the audio device name under Sound, video and game controllers. Names vary by manufacturer.
- Use only a driver intended for the exact PC or audio-device model and Windows 11 version.
These observations help separate a driver problem from output selection, hidden-device, service, format, or enhancement problems.

Windows Update is the best first route for a routine update. Check for updates, install any applicable audio driver update, and restart Windows to complete the installation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow Windows to search.
- Install any available audio driver update that applies to your PC. Depending on the Windows build, driver updates may be presented with other updates or under optional updates.
- Restart the PC when installation is complete, then test the speakers or headphones you normally use.
Microsoft describes Windows Update as the recommended way to get the latest audio drivers. See Microsoft’s audio-driver update instructions for current guidance.
Do not assume that every Windows Update check will offer a driver update. If none appears, that does not by itself prove the installed driver is the newest one available for your particular computer. Windows Update may have no applicable package, while the PC maker may publish a newer model-specific version.
How do I update the driver manually in Device Manager?
Device Manager lets you ask Windows to search for an updated driver for a selected audio device. It is a manual alternative when you want to target a particular device or Windows Update did not present an applicable update.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device you want to update and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow any on-screen instructions. Restart Windows after the update, then check whether sound works.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed, Windows’ automatic search may still not have found a newer version offered by the PC or audio-device manufacturer. The result is not a guarantee that no newer compatible driver exists. Check the manufacturer’s support site for the exact PC or audio-device model and Windows 11 compatibility before installing a package.
Do not treat Device Manager’s automatic search as a comparison of every driver on the internet. It searches using the Windows driver sources available to the system. A manufacturer package can contain model-specific support that a generic Windows package does not.
How do I roll back an audio driver after an update?
Use rollback when a driver update appears to have caused a new sound problem. It attempts to restore the previous driver version; it is not a general reset and may not be available.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers, then right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if the button is available, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC and test sound.
Microsoft states: “The Roll Back Driver option is available only if a previous driver version exists.” If the button is missing or unavailable, Windows has no previous version to restore through this control. The absence of the button is therefore not an indication that you missed a hidden menu.
After restarting, test the same output that failed and confirm that the device appears in Sound settings. If rollback restores audio, avoid immediately installing the same problematic update again; allow Windows Update or the manufacturer to provide a compatible replacement when available.
If sound did not begin failing after an update, rollback is not the most direct choice. Use Windows Update for routine maintenance, or consider reinstalling if the driver installation itself appears damaged.
How do I reinstall an audio driver in Windows 11?
To reinstall, uninstall the audio device in Device Manager and restart the PC. Microsoft says Windows automatically reinstalls the audio driver after restart.

- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the prompt and complete any on-screen steps. The exact wording and options can vary by device and Windows build.
- Restart the PC. Windows should detect the device and reinstall its audio driver during startup.
- After Windows loads, test sound and check that the device appears in Sound settings.
Do not select an option to remove or delete the driver package unless you have a specific reason and a suitable replacement driver. Microsoft’s standard update guidance describes uninstalling the device and restarting; removal-related options can vary. For its reinstall instructions and other sound-fix procedures, see Microsoft’s sound and audio troubleshooting guide.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If the device does not return after restart, open Device Manager again. The entry may be hidden, disabled, or absent because Windows needs a model-specific package. Use View > Show hidden devices and then Action > Scan for hardware changes before deciding that the reinstall failed.
What if “No audio output device is installed” appears?
If Windows reports “No audio output device is installed,” or speakers or headphones do not appear under Output in Sound settings, first check whether the device is disabled or hidden. If it is not detected, scan for hardware changes before choosing another driver.
- Open Device Manager.
- Select View > Show hidden devices and look for the audio device.
- Check whether the device is disabled; if so, enable it using the available device menu.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Recheck Sound settings. If the device remains missing or the driver is missing or incompatible, look for a Windows 11 driver for the exact PC or audio-device model on its manufacturer’s support site.
A missing output entry does not establish that the driver is the only cause. The device can be disabled, hidden, or not detected independently of whether a newer driver exists. Microsoft’s missing or undetected output-device instructions cover hidden devices and manufacturer driver installation.
How do I try the generic Windows audio driver?
If the manufacturer-specific driver is unavailable or has not resolved the problem, Windows may offer a generic audio driver. This is a driver-selection option in Device Manager, not a separate download.
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Choose an available generic audio driver supplied with Windows, then follow the prompts.
- Restart and test sound.
Available driver choices depend on the device. If the generic option is absent, do not force a driver intended for different hardware; use the exact-model manufacturer route or continue with Windows’ audio troubleshooting guidance. A generic driver can help establish whether the Windows installation can communicate with the device, but it may not expose every feature provided by a model-specific package.
What should I check if changing the driver does not restore sound?
A failed driver fix may mean the remaining issue is elsewhere in the audio setup. Before making more driver changes, check that Windows is using the intended output and follow the relevant sound troubleshooting steps.

- Confirm the output selection. Make sure Sound settings are using the speakers, headphones, or other device you intend to hear through. A monitor or another connected output can be selected even when the internal speakers work.
- Run the audio troubleshooter. Microsoft’s broader guide includes troubleshooting tools and additional checks.
- Check audio services and format. These are among the Windows audio issues covered in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Review audio enhancements. If the sound problem remains, check the enhancement settings rather than assuming another driver replacement is required.
- Check detection again. If the output disappears from Sound settings, return to Device Manager and inspect hidden or disabled devices instead of repeatedly running an update.
For the applicable steps, use Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting guide. Avoid treating progressively more forceful driver changes as the default response when the device is present but sound still does not behave as expected.
How do I choose a manufacturer driver safely?
Use a manufacturer driver when Windows does not offer a suitable update or the available Windows driver has not resolved the issue. Confirm that the package is for the exact computer or audio-device model and supports Windows 11 before installing it.
- Identify the complete PC model, or the exact audio-device model if it is a separate device.
- Use that model on the manufacturer’s official support site to locate its driver downloads.
- Check the driver’s Windows compatibility and any model-specific installation instructions.
- Check whether the maker distinguishes between built-in audio, a monitor audio component, and a separate USB or other audio device.
- Do not install a package simply because its name resembles your device; a driver for a different model may be incompatible.
- If the correct package is not available, use Windows Update or the generic driver option where appropriate rather than relying on an unrelated third-party driver-updater download.
Driver menus and manufacturer packages can differ between models. Follow the device maker’s instructions when they provide model-specific steps, and restart if the installer requests it before testing playback.
What is the difference between updating, rolling back, and reinstalling?
Each operation changes the driver situation in a different way. The right choice depends on whether the problem followed an update, whether a previous version is available, or whether Windows needs to rebuild the installation.
| Action | Purpose | When it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update | Install a newer compatible driver. | Routine maintenance, or an outdated or incompatible driver. | Device Manager’s automatic search may not find a newer manufacturer version. |
| Roll back | Return to a previous driver version. | A problem began after a recent driver update. | Works only when Windows has a previous driver version available. |
| Reinstall | Remove the current device installation and let Windows install it again after restart. | Updating did not help, or the installation may be incomplete or corrupted. | Windows may not resolve the issue automatically; a compatible manufacturer or generic driver may be needed. |
Keep the sequence diagnostic: use Windows Update for routine updates, rollback for a likely update regression, and uninstall-and-restart reinstall when the current installation may be the problem. If the device is absent, investigate detection before assuming one of these operations will fix it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls to avoid
- Do not assume newer is always better. A newly installed driver can introduce a regression; that is the situation rollback is designed for.
- Do not promise rollback. The control depends on a stored previous version and can be unavailable.
- Do not delete the driver package by default. The standard reinstall path is uninstalling the device and restarting. Removal checkboxes and wording vary.
- Do not install by name alone. Match the exact model and Windows compatibility on the official support site.
- Do not mistake a missing output for a guaranteed driver failure. Check hidden and disabled devices, output selection, and other audio settings.
- Do not use a third-party updater as the default. Windows Update and the manufacturer’s official package are the safer routes.
When should I use System Restore?
System Restore may help when sound failed after a broader system change and a suitable restore point exists, particularly when the individual driver rollback control is unavailable. It is a wider recovery action than reinstalling one audio device, so review its implications before proceeding. Restoring Windows can affect apps, drivers, and settings added after the selected restore point. Use it only after considering the narrower update, rollback, reinstall, and audio-diagnosis steps above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can System Restore help if Roll Back Driver is unavailable?
It may be an option if the sound problem began after a broader system change and a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft includes System Restore among its audio recovery guidance; review the implications before using it, since restoring Windows can affect apps, drivers, and settings added after the restore point.

Should I download an audio driver from a third-party driver updater?
It is safer to use Windows Update or the official support site for the exact PC or audio-device model. A package selected for similar-looking hardware may not be compatible.
Why does sound still fail even though the audio device appears in Windows?
The active output selection, audio services, sound format, or enhancements can affect playback even when the device is listed. Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting guide covers these areas.
Why is Roll Back Driver missing?
Windows shows that option only when a previous driver version exists. If the button is unavailable, use the procedure that matches the problem: Windows Update for maintenance, reinstall for a possibly incomplete installation, or the manufacturer or generic driver route.

After you uninstall the audio device, Microsoft says Windows automatically reinstalls its audio driver after restart. If the device does not return, show hidden devices, scan for hardware changes, and check the exact-model manufacturer driver.
What if my speakers or headphones are not listed under Output?
In Device Manager, use View > Show hidden devices, check whether the audio device is disabled, and choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. If it remains missing, look for a Windows 11 driver for the exact PC or audio-device model.
Should I update, roll back, or reinstall first?
Use Windows Update first when sound works and you want routine maintenance. Use rollback when the failure followed an update. Use uninstall-and-restart reinstall when the installation may be incomplete or updating did not help.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows Update for routine audio-driver maintenance. If sound failed immediately after an update, try Roll Back Driver, understanding that it requires a stored previous version. If the installation appears damaged or rollback is unavailable, uninstall the audio device and restart so Windows can reinstall it. For a missing device, check hidden or disabled entries and scan for hardware changes; then use the exact-model manufacturer or available generic Windows driver. If the device is present but playback still fails, investigate output selection, services, format, enhancements, and other Windows audio troubleshooting steps instead of repeatedly replacing the driver.
