Update R and RStudio separately: install the latest released R version for your operating system, install the stable RStudio Desktop release, then confirm that RStudio is using the R version you intended. As of October 4, 2026, the R Project lists R 4.6.1 as the latest released version; R 4.6.2 is scheduled for October 29, 2026, but has not yet been released. Posit’s guide describes RStudio Desktop 2026.09.0.

R and RStudio are separate installations

R is the programming language and runtime that executes your code. RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE)—an interface for writing and running code—that connects to an installed R version. Posit describes RStudio as an IDE designed to support multiple languages, including R and Python. Updating RStudio does not install a newer R runtime, and updating R does not automatically update the IDE.

Before downloading, check the release status on the R Project website. Its release page lists R 4.6.1 (Happy Hop), released June 24, 2026. Although the page gives October 29, 2026 as the planned final release date for R 4.6.2, that version is not yet released as of October 4, 2026.

Before you update

  • Save your work and note your current R version from the R console. In RStudio, use Help > About RStudio to note the IDE version; menu labels can vary slightly by release.
  • Check your operating system and architecture, and make sure the installer you choose supports them.
  • Back up important project files. If a project uses a package-management setup or lockfile, keep it with the project and follow its existing workflow.
  • Make a note of packages your projects depend on. Installing a new R version does not guarantee that packages or project environments will transfer or work unchanged.

Install or update R

Windows and macOS

  1. Open the R Project download page and follow its link to CRAN.
  2. Choose a CRAN mirror, then select the download for your operating system and install the released version offered there. Follow the installer’s prompts.
  3. After installation, verify the new version in R or in an RStudio session after selecting the new runtime as described below.

Linux

Use installation instructions that match your Linux distribution and version. Posit’s R installation guide provides distribution-specific instructions for selected systems. Its examples use versioned installation locations and include a check such as /opt/R/${R_VERSION}/bin/R --version. Do not run commands written for a different distribution: package managers, repositories, and system dependencies vary.

On Linux, installing R alone may not be enough for every package. Packages that compile from source can require system libraries and development tools; consult the distribution-specific guidance if installation fails.

Managing multiple R versions

If you need to keep more than one R installation, Posit documents rig, an R Installation Manager for macOS, Windows, and Linux. See Posit’s R version selection guidance for details.

Install or update RStudio Desktop

  1. Open Posit’s RStudio IDE User Guide and choose the stable desktop installer for your operating system.
  2. At the time covered here, the guide describes RStudio Desktop 2026.09.0 and lists installers for Windows 11, macOS 14 or later, Ubuntu 22, 24, and 26, Debian 13, RHEL 9 and 10, and Fedora. Check the guide for the package format and current requirements for your particular system.
  3. Run the installer and follow its prompts. Posit recommends stable builds for general use; daily builds are intended for testing.

Installing or updating the IDE does not, by itself, choose a different R runtime. Check the selected version after the IDE is installed.

Make sure RStudio is using the intended R version

Install the new R version first, then restart RStudio and check the version printed in its console. If it still reports the old version, the IDE may be finding another installation. Selection behavior depends on the operating system.

Platform How RStudio finds or selects R What to check if it opens the old version
Windows RStudio uses the system’s current R by default, but its options allow another installed version to be selected. Open RStudio’s General options and inspect the configured R version.
macOS Selection depends on the installed R framework or executable locations. Check which framework or executable the IDE is set to use.
Linux RStudio generally uses the R executable found on the system PATH. Run which R in a terminal and confirm it points to the intended executable.

For platform-specific steps and details about selecting among installations, see Posit’s guide to changing R versions in RStudio Desktop.

Compatibility and common problems

The newest RStudio installer does not support your macOS version

Posit notes that current RStudio releases may not work on older, unsupported macOS versions. Check its supported versions table before installing. The table lists macOS 13 Ventura with RStudio 2025.09.1+401 and R 4.5.1, and macOS 12 Monterey with RStudio 2024.09.1+394 and R 4.4.1 as historical certified pairings. These are compatibility references, not current-version recommendations for people who can upgrade macOS. If your system cannot run the current IDE, use Posit’s compatibility information and previous-build references to identify an appropriate version, and check its support status.

RStudio still reports the old R version

First confirm that the new R installation exists. Then check the relevant platform setting: RStudio’s General options on Windows, the selected framework or executable on macOS, or the result of which R on Linux. Restart RStudio after changing the selection and check the version in its console.

A package fails to install after the update

Do not assume every package will move to the new R installation or install as a ready-made binary. Check the package’s requirements and your project’s package-management files. On Linux, a source installation can fail when the system libraries or development dependencies it needs are absent; use instructions for your distribution to resolve those dependencies.
