To update a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, connect the console to the internet and open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. To update one game, highlight its HOME Menu icon, press +, select Software Update, then Via the Internet. Both consoles can download update data automatically while online, but updates still depend on a working connection and enough free storage. Switch 2 has one important storage difference: it accepts only microSD Express cards, not ordinary microSD cards.

What is the difference between a system update and a game update?

A system update changes the console’s operating software. A game update changes the files for one installed game, such as bug fixes, compatibility data, or new content supplied by that game’s publisher. They use different HOME Menu paths, so updating the console does not necessarily update every game.

Update type What it changes Where you start it Internet requirement
System software The Switch or Switch 2 operating system System Settings > System > System Update Internet is the normal method
Individual game One game’s software files Highlight the game, press +, then Software Update Internet, or local version matching where supported
Automatic download Available system or game update data Occurs while the console is online Requires an online connection, available storage, and applicable console settings

Nintendo says update data can download automatically while the console is connected. The console can then display an update prompt before software starts, so an automatic download does not mean you must manually search for a version number first.

Where do I check my Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system version?

The installed version appears on the same page used to start a system update.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
  1. Open the HOME Menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Scroll to System.
  4. Choose System Update.

The page shows the console’s current system version and checks for an available update. Nintendo publishes changing version numbers in individual update notices, so the procedure above is more useful than relying on an old “latest version” number in a guide.

How do I update Nintendo Switch system software?

Use the built-in System Update page. Save any work, connect to a reliable network, and allow the download and installation to finish before trying to launch software.

  1. Connect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet.
  2. From HOME, open System Settings.
  3. Select System, then System Update.
  4. Read the displayed version information and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Leave the console powered on while the update downloads and installs. The console may restart as part of the process.

Nintendo also supports automatic system-update downloads while the console is online. If the update was already downloaded, the System Update page can still be used to check the installed version and complete any remaining installation step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the update prompt appears before a game starts?

Accept the prompt if you want to run the current software version. Nintendo’s update process can download data in advance and then ask for confirmation before software starts; that prompt is separate from manually checking the System Update page.

How do I update an individual Switch or Switch 2 game?

Game updates are started from the game’s icon, not from the console-wide System Update page.

  4. Select Software Update.
  5. Choose Via the Internet.
  6. Wait for the download and installation to finish before launching the game.

Nintendo also documents automatic game-update downloads while the console is online. The manual path is useful when a title did not update automatically or when you want to check one specific game without waiting for the next launch prompt.

Can I update a game without internet access?

Sometimes. Nintendo documents Match Version with Local Users, which lets nearby compatible consoles share update data when internet access is unavailable. This is a local-console method rather than a way to download new data from Nintendo’s servers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the consoles near one another and make sure the game is installed on the console that needs the update.
  2. On the game’s HOME Menu icon, press +.
  3. Open Software Update.
  4. Choose Match Version with Local Users when that option is available.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions on each participating console and keep them nearby until the transfer completes.

Availability depends on the software and the consoles involved. Nintendo’s Korean support documentation specifies system version 4.0.0 or later for participating systems; if the option is missing, update the consoles over the internet first or use the documented online method.

How do automatic updates work on Switch and Switch 2?

When the console is connected to the internet, Nintendo says system and software-update data can download automatically. Automatic downloading is convenient, but it is not a guarantee that every update will install immediately: the console still needs enough free space, and some software displays a confirmation prompt before it starts.

  • Use automatic downloads when the console is regularly online and you have spare storage.
  • Use the manual path when a game shows an update request, failed to update, or must be checked before a specific play session.
  • Check storage if downloads stop, even when the internet connection appears normal.

What storage does Nintendo Switch 2 use for updates?

Switch 2 can store downloadable software, downloadable content, and update data in system memory or on a compatible expansion card. Nintendo’s official storage guidance states that the only SD card compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 is a microSD Express card. A regular microSD card is not a substitute for additional Switch 2 storage.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

How do I check free space?

  1. Open System Settings from HOME.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Review available space in system memory and, if installed, on the microSD Express card.
  4. Free space by removing software or other data you no longer need, or install a compatible microSD Express card before retrying the download.

Save data remains in system memory, while downloadable software, downloadable content, and update data can use system memory or the microSD Express card. Adding a card therefore expands the location available for downloads, but it does not move save data out of system memory.

What happens when I insert a microSD Express card?

Nintendo says inserting a microSD Express card can prompt a Switch 2 system update. Follow that prompt if it appears, then return to System Settings > System > System Update to verify the installed system version.

How do Switch 2 game-key cards handle first-use downloads?

A Switch 2 game-key card is not necessarily a complete software installation on the card itself. Nintendo says the first launch requires an internet connection to download the game’s software data. Before starting, ensure there is enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card.

  1. Insert the game-key card into the Switch 2.
  2. Connect the console to the internet.
  3. Start the software and allow the required data download to complete.
  4. Keep the game-key card inserted when playing, because Nintendo requires the card to remain in the console for this type of software.

The initial download is separate from later patches or updates. If the download fails, check both the network connection and the available storage before trying again.

Why will my Switch game not update?

The usual causes are a disconnected network, insufficient free space, an interrupted download, or a game that needs to be checked manually from its HOME icon. Work through the following order so you do not troubleshoot storage and networking at the same time.

1. Confirm the internet connection

Reconnect the console to the internet and retry the documented game path: highlight the game, press +, choose Software Update, then Via the Internet. If the console cannot maintain a connection, resolve that connection problem before retrying the download.

2. Restart the console

Restart the Switch or Switch 2, return to HOME, and check System Settings > System > System Update. A restart can clear an interrupted update state and gives the console a fresh check for available data.

3. Check free storage

Open System Settings > Data Management and verify that enough space is available for the update or initial download. On Switch 2, use a microSD Express card if more capacity is needed; an ordinary microSD card will not work.

4. Retry the individual game update

Even when automatic downloads are enabled, run + > Software Update > Via the Internet from the affected game’s HOME icon. Let the process finish before opening the game again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Use local version matching when internet service is unavailable

If a nearby compatible console already has the required game version, use Match Version with Local Users. This option is not available for every situation, and Nintendo’s Korean support page requires participating systems to be on system version 4.0.0 or later.

Which update method should I use?

The best method depends on whether you are changing the console itself, one game, or a game whose data must be downloaded for the first time.

Situation Recommended method Connection Storage to check
Checking or updating the console operating system System Settings > System > System Update Internet System storage and, on Switch 2, microSD Express capacity if used
Updating one installed game Game icon > + > Software Update > Via the Internet Internet Space for that game’s update
No internet, but a nearby compatible console has the update Game icon > + > Software Update > Match Version with Local Users Nearby compatible consoles Space on the receiving console
First launch of Switch 2 game-key-card software Insert card and download the required software data Internet required System memory or microSD Express card; card must stay inserted
Console is online and updates are available Allow automatic download, then accept any launch prompt Internet Available storage and applicable console settings

What should I verify after an update?

For a console update, return to System Settings > System > System Update and read the displayed installed version. For a game, wait until the download and installation finish, then start the title from HOME. If the game still requests an update, repeat the manual game-update path and check Data Management for free space before trying another download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Nintendo Account have to be linked for a Switch 2 game-key card’s first download?

No. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required for the initial software-data download, although the console must be connected to the internet, have enough storage, and keep the game-key card inserted for play.

What system version is required for Match Version with Local Users?

Nintendo’s Korean support documentation says participating consoles must use system version 4.0.0 or later. If either console is below that requirement, use an internet system update before attempting local version matching.

What if I have no internet connection and no nearby compatible console?

Nintendo’s documented alternatives are an internet update or Match Version with Local Users. Without either connection method, the console cannot obtain the missing update data through the procedures described here; reconnect later and retry the appropriate update path.

Why can a Switch 2 game-key card still need a large download?

The card can act as a key for the software while the game’s data is downloaded to system memory or a microSD Express card. The download is required on first launch, and the card remains necessary whenever you play.
