Fast travel unlocks after you defeat General Lothaire in his Chapter 2 rematch outside the Abandoned Church, then enter the church and rest at its Lantern. Defeating Lothaire alone is not enough. After that first rest, the Lantern menu adds TRAVEL, letting you move between Lanterns you have discovered or return to the Abandoned Church when that option is available.
What exactly unlocks fast travel?
The unlock has two required parts: the Chapter 2 rematch with General Lothaire and a rest at the Lantern inside the Abandoned Church. The earlier battlefield encounter with Lothaire is a separate fight and does not activate the travel network.
- Finish Chapter 2’s Lothaire rematch. The relevant battle takes place outside the Abandoned Church.
- Enter the Abandoned Church. Reaching the building is necessary, but crossing the doorway does not by itself add the menu.
- Rest at the church Lantern. Use the REST interaction. The first rest displays the tutorial, “You can freely travel between any discovered Lanterns.”
- Open the Lantern menu again. TRAVEL appears as the second row beneath LEVEL UP.
The same Lantern menu also handles character leveling and Ferrofluid Flask upgrades, so the church becomes a practical return point for progression as well as transportation.

When can I teleport between Lanterns?
You can teleport once the church trigger is complete, but every destination must already be discovered and activated. Lanterns function as checkpoints, level-up stations and teleport beacons; simply running past an early checkpoint does not add it to the travel list.

How to travel from a Lantern
- Reach any Lantern you have lit or rekindled and choose REST.
- Select TRAVEL, the row directly below LEVEL UP.
- On the “Travel to the Lantern” screen, switch region tabs at the top. The detailed guide assigns Q and E to tab changes.
- Choose an activated Lantern in that region. Your current checkpoint is labelled Current location.
- Select another destination. Travel begins immediately; there is no separate confirmation box.
When offered by the menu, press F — RETURN TO THE ABANDONED CHURCH to go directly back to the church.
Which Lanterns and regions can I revisit?
The normal travel list covers the following revisitable regions and their named Lanterns. A location appears only after you have activated its Lantern.

Prison and Entropy are exceptions: they are story-locked areas and do not appear in the travel list even after their related quests.

How should I use fast travel for backtracking?
Valor Mortis uses Metroidvania-style traversal gates, so an area can contain routes or loot that are unreachable when you first pass through it. The Grapple and Shield Transmutation are later abilities specifically identified as opening paths in earlier regions.
A practical return loop
- Activate every Lantern you can safely reach while exploring.
- When a new movement ability opens an old route, rest at the nearest Lantern and choose TRAVEL.
- Return to the Abandoned Church to spend Catalysts or improve equipment.
- Use the travel list to teleport back to the region and Lantern nearest the newly opened route.
This avoids repeating long combat stretches while still allowing deliberate cleanup of earlier maps. If a region or checkpoint is not listed, verify activation rather than assuming the game has removed it.

Can I fast travel during every story chapter?
No. Normal travel is available after the Chapter 2 unlock, but boss encounters and selected late-story sequences can temporarily disable Lantern rest or teleportation. Treat the restriction as contextual unless the game still blocks travel after the encounter or sequence has ended.

The permanent-looking exceptions are the story-locked Prison and Entropy areas, which are not included in the ordinary Lantern list. They should not be expected to behave like the ten revisitable regions above.

Fast-travel checklist
- Defeat General Lothaire in the Chapter 2 rematch outside the Abandoned Church.
- Enter the church and rest at its Lantern.
- Confirm that TRAVEL appears below LEVEL UP.
- Activate each Lantern before expecting it to be a destination.
- Use Q and E to change region tabs on the travel screen.
- End active boss encounters before attempting to rest or travel.
- Expect temporary late-story restrictions and the permanent story-locked Prison and Entropy exceptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to beat the first General Lothaire encounter to unlock fast travel?
No. The opening battlefield fight is a separate encounter. Fast travel is tied to the Chapter 2 rematch outside the Abandoned Church and the subsequent rest at the church Lantern.
Does every Lantern automatically become a travel destination when I pass it?
No. You must activate, light or rekindle the Lantern. A checkpoint that you merely pass will not be selectable from the travel screen.
Why does selecting a destination move me immediately?
The travel screen does not use a second confirmation prompt. Once you select an activated Lantern other than the one marked “Current location,” the game begins the transfer immediately.
