If a problem began after a recent Windows 11 update, uninstall that update. If it began after upgrading to a new Windows version, use Go back to return to the previous version—if the option is still available. These are different recovery actions, and neither is guaranteed to appear on every PC.
Choose the right recovery option
Windows distinguishes between a recent update and an upgrade to a new Windows version. Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly contain fixes and security updates; feature updates typically arrive once a year and add functionality. If you are unsure which change preceded the problem, check Settings > Windows Update > Update history and identify whether it was a recent update or a version upgrade. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Update FAQ.
| Option | Use it when | What it changes | Availability |
| Uninstall an update in Settings | A recent update seems to have caused the issue and Windows starts. | Keeps personal files and apps; removes the selected update. | Only updates Windows offers for uninstall can be removed. |
| Uninstall updates in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) | Windows cannot be accessed normally after an update. | Attempts to remove a recent update; available recovery options depend on the device. | You must be able to reach WinRE. BitLocker may require its recovery key. |
| Go back | The issue began after upgrading to a new Windows version. | Keeps personal files; removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses Settings changes made since then. | Usually available for 10 days after the upgrade, provided the required previous-installation files remain. |
Uninstall a recent update from Settings
Use this route when Windows starts and the problem appears tied to a particular update.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the update you want to remove, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart if Windows asks you to, then check whether the original problem has changed.
Some updates cannot be uninstalled, and Windows may not list the update you are looking for. Microsoft’s update removal guidance also advises understanding the risks before removing a security update. For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends trying to reinstall the current Windows version first.

Uninstall an update when Windows will not start
If you cannot reach Settings, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Before starting, back up important files if possible and locate your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Microsoft says the key is needed for most WinRE recovery options; learn more in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.
- Enter WinRE. If the recovery screen is already open, continue. Otherwise, use the available recovery method for your device; Microsoft describes ways to reach WinRE in its WinRE guidance.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose an uninstall option shown on your screen and follow the prompts. The exact choices can vary by device and recovery state; read the option displayed rather than assuming it removes a particular update type.
If BitLocker asks for a recovery key, you will need that key to continue. If update removal is unavailable or does not resolve the startup problem, WinRE offers other recovery options, but they are not equivalent to uninstalling an update. Depending on your device and Windows version, choices may include System Restore, Reset this PC, or reinstalling Windows; some Windows 11 24H2-or-later devices may also offer point-in-time restore. Each option can affect files, apps, or settings differently, so review its effects before proceeding. Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains these alternatives.

Go back to the previous Windows version
Use Go back when the trouble followed an upgrade to a new Windows version—not merely a monthly update. Open Settings > System > Recovery, then select Go back if it appears. Answer the prompts and let Windows complete the rollback.
Microsoft says Go back is available for a limited time, usually 10 days after upgrading. That is a typical window, not a guarantee that the button will still be available on your PC. The rollback keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses Settings changes made since then. Apps added, removed, or updated after upgrading might not be available or work properly after returning to the previous version.

The option also depends on the files and conditions required for rollback. Microsoft says to keep the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders, remove user accounts added after the upgrade, and have the upgrade USB drive available if one was used. Consult Microsoft’s recovery options guidance for the full requirements.
Why Go back may be missing
Go back may no longer be offered after the rollback window expires or if the previous-installation files needed for the process are no longer present. Windows automatically deletes the previous Windows installation 10 days after an upgrade. Deleting it earlier also removes the ability to return to the previous version. Before using Storage settings or Disk Cleanup to remove the previous installation, consider whether you still need the rollback option. Microsoft explains this in Delete your previous version of Windows.

Prepare before using recovery
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery because some recovery choices can cause data loss.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key. You may need it to access most WinRE recovery options on an encrypted PC.
- Check which change caused the issue. Removing a selected update is different from returning to an earlier Windows version, and choosing the wrong route may not address the problem.
- Consider a recovery drive for future emergencies. Microsoft says you can create a USB recovery drive while the PC is working; it is a contingency, not a requirement for uninstalling an update in Settings or using Go back. A manufacturer recovery image may include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media may not include.
