Windows 11 lets an application take exclusive control of a specific speaker, headphone, microphone, or other audio endpoint. To change it, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings, select the device on the Playback or Recording tab, choose Properties > Advanced, then check or clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. Select Apply and OK.
Enable the option when an application explicitly needs exclusive endpoint access. Disable it when you need Windows, notifications, and several applications to share the device, or when an application is reporting an exclusive-mode conflict. The setting applies to one endpoint at a time; changing speakers does not change a microphone.
What does exclusive mode do in Windows 11?
Exclusive mode determines whether an application may open an audio endpoint in a way that gives it sole use of that endpoint. An endpoint is a particular output or input device, such as a laptop’s speakers, a USB headset, or a microphone. The permission is configured independently for every endpoint.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When exclusive access is allowed and an application opens an exclusive-mode stream, that application can control the endpoint without the normal Windows shared mixer. Microsoft describes shared mode as allowing several applications to open shared-mode streams on one endpoint. In contrast, an exclusive stream can take control of the endpoint and prevent other audio from being heard or captured through it. See Microsoft’s Exclusive-Mode Streams documentation.

Microsoft warns that an exclusive stream can silence system sounds, notifications, and audio from other applications while it holds the endpoint. That behavior is intentional, not necessarily a fault. If you are in a call, playing a game, editing audio, and expecting alert sounds at the same time, shared mode is usually the more interoperable choice.
Disabling the permission does not disable the device. It prevents applications from using that endpoint in exclusive mode, leaving shared-mode streams available. An application that requires exclusive access may then show an error or offer another configuration.
How do I enable or disable exclusive mode for a playback device?
Use the Playback tab for speakers, headphones, HDMI audio, Bluetooth output, USB headsets, and other devices that send sound to you.
- Open Settings from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
- Select System, then Sound.
- Scroll to Advanced and select More sound settings. This opens the classic Sound dialog.
- Open the Playback tab.
- Select the exact output endpoint you want to change. If several devices have similar names, use the one currently selected by Windows or the application.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Under Exclusive Mode, check Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device to permit exclusive access, or clear it to prevent exclusive-mode access.
- Select Apply, then OK. Close the remaining dialogs.
The change affects only the selected playback endpoint. If you use both a monitor’s HDMI speakers and a headset, configure each endpoint separately if they need different behavior.
How do I change exclusive mode for a microphone or other input?
For a microphone, line input, audio interface input, or another recording endpoint, use the Recording tab instead of Playback.
- Go to Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings.
- Select the Recording tab.
- Choose the intended input device and select Properties.
- Open Advanced.
- Check or clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Playback and recording are separate endpoints. Disabling exclusive mode for speakers does not prevent a recording application from requesting exclusive access to a microphone, and changing a microphone does not alter headphone behavior.
What is “Give exclusive mode applications priority”?
Give exclusive mode applications priority is a second, separate checkbox in the same Advanced tab. It matters only when exclusive-mode access is permitted by the first checkbox.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWith priority enabled, an exclusive-mode request can take precedence over applications that are already using shared-mode streams. In practical terms, an application requesting exclusive access may preempt current shared playback or capture. With priority disabled, an exclusive request does not preempt an endpoint that is already in use by shared-mode streams, although an application may still be able to obtain exclusive access when the endpoint is available.

Do not use the priority checkbox as a substitute for the main permission. The combinations have different effects:
| Allow applications to take exclusive control | Give exclusive mode applications priority | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cleared | Either state | Exclusive-mode access is blocked for that endpoint; shared-mode applications can use it. |
| Checked | Cleared | Exclusive access is allowed, but an exclusive request does not preempt an endpoint already occupied by shared-mode streams. |
| Checked | Checked | Exclusive access is allowed and an eligible request can take precedence over current shared-mode use. |
The controls and their endpoint behavior are described in Microsoft’s technical documentation.
Should I enable or disable exclusive mode?
Choose based on whether one application needs sole endpoint control or several sources must keep working together. There is no setting that is best for every device, driver, application, and audio format.
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications, browser audio, music, and a communications app must play together | Clear the exclusive-control checkbox | Shared mode preserves Windows mixing and avoids one stream silencing the others. |
| An application explicitly says it requires exclusive access | Check the exclusive-control checkbox | The application can request sole control of the endpoint. |
| An exclusive application should not interrupt audio already playing | Allow exclusive control, but clear the priority checkbox | Exclusive requests are less likely to preempt existing shared-mode streams. |
| A particular application reports an exclusive-mode conflict | Temporarily clear the exclusive-control checkbox for the affected endpoint | This forces that endpoint to use shared-mode streams while you check the application’s own guidance. |
| You want low latency but still need system mixing | Evaluate the application’s low-period shared-mode option before forcing exclusive mode | Microsoft notes that low-period shared-mode streams can provide latency comparable to exclusive mode while retaining interoperability. |
Do not assume that enabling exclusive mode automatically improves sound quality or latency. The result depends on the application, endpoint, driver, and selected format. Microsoft’s guidance presents low-period shared mode as an alternative when low latency and concurrent audio are both important; see Exclusive-Mode Streams.
Why would someone disable exclusive mode?
Disabling the permission is useful when a single application taking the endpoint causes symptoms elsewhere. While an exclusive stream is active, Windows sounds, notifications, and other application audio may be silent because the endpoint is no longer available to shared-mode streams.
Use shared mode for mixed everyday audio
Shared mode is generally the practical choice for a desktop where a browser, media player, games, meeting software, and system notifications need to coexist. Clearing the permission prevents an application from opening that endpoint exclusively, so the Windows mixer can continue combining shared streams.
Use it as a targeted conflict test
If only one program fails to open an interface or reports that the device is unavailable, clear the checkbox on that endpoint, apply the change, and restart the program. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a promise that every audio problem will disappear. Application documentation may require a different mode or additional settings.

An application with exclusive access to a microphone can prevent other programs from capturing from that endpoint. If a meeting application cannot obtain the microphone while another recorder is open, checking the Recording tab’s exclusive-mode setting is appropriate.

When is enabling exclusive mode appropriate?
Enable it when the application’s documented workflow specifically requests exclusive endpoint control, or when you intentionally want one application to bypass shared mixing. Some professional or specialized audio workflows use exclusive access to select a particular format or control timing, but Windows does not guarantee a universal quality or latency gain from the checkbox alone.
Confirm the application requirement first
Check the application’s audio-device settings and support instructions before changing Windows. If it offers shared, exclusive, or a dedicated driver mode, the application’s documentation should explain which one it expects. Enabling the Windows permission merely allows an exclusive request; it does not force every application to use one.
Consider preemption separately
If you want exclusive access available but do not want a newly opened application to interrupt current shared audio, leave the first checkbox checked and clear Give exclusive mode applications priority. If the application must take over immediately, priority may need to remain enabled.

Verify the endpoint and the symptom first so you do not change the wrong device.
- Identify the active endpoint: In Settings > System > Sound, confirm the selected output or input. A monitor, dock, headset, and laptop speaker can all appear as separate endpoints.
- Match the tab to the direction: Use Playback for output and Recording for input.
- Reproduce the problem: Note which application has the device and whether system audio, another application, or the microphone stops working.
- Check application settings: Some applications select a device internally, so changing the Windows default endpoint may not change the application’s chosen endpoint.
- Record the original state: Note both checkboxes before editing so you can restore them if the application behaves differently.
These checks align with Microsoft’s general Windows sound troubleshooting guidance, which starts with confirming the selected device and checking its properties.
What is the safest way to test a change?
Change one endpoint at a time and test the application that prompted the change. This isolates the setting instead of altering every speaker, headset, and microphone on the computer.
- Close or stop playback in the application involved, if possible.
- Change the checkbox for the exact endpoint.
- Select Apply and OK.
- Fully close and reopen the application. Some programs read endpoint capabilities only when they start.
- Test the original task, then test a second audio source such as a browser notification or another application.
- If the result is worse, restore the previous checkbox state and retest before changing another setting.
For a device-specific conflict involving an audio interface, Ableton documents the same Windows 11 route to disable exclusive mode: Disabling exclusive mode for ASIO interfaces. The application may still have its own driver or mode requirements.

Not every endpoint exposes identical controls. Windows’ interface can vary with the device, driver, connection type, and installed software, so there is no single universal procedure for an endpoint that does not show the checkboxes.

- Confirm that you opened the endpoint’s Properties, not the newer quick sound panel.
- Check both Playback and Recording if you are unsure whether the device is an input or output.
- Look for a different endpoint representing the same physical hardware, such as a hands-free and stereo profile.
- Read the device maker’s or application maker’s instructions for that exact model and driver.
Do not install a replacement driver or buy new hardware solely because the checkbox is absent. The available controls are endpoint-specific, and the reviewed Microsoft guidance does not establish one fix that applies to every driver.

Exclusive mode is only one possible cause. If changing it does not resolve the symptom, continue with basic Windows checks rather than repeatedly toggling the same option.
Confirm output, input, and volume
Return to Settings > System > Sound and verify the intended output or input is selected. Check the application’s own device selector and volume, as well as Windows’ volume mixer. A muted application or an output routed to a monitor can look like an exclusive-mode failure.
Check enhancements and format-related behavior
In the endpoint’s properties, review audio enhancements and any format options exposed by the driver. Microsoft’s sound guidance includes checking device properties and enhancements when playback remains faulty. Change only one option at a time and test after applying it.
Check driver health
If the device is missing, repeatedly disconnects, or fails in every application, inspect its status in Windows and follow the manufacturer’s support instructions. Exclusive-mode settings cannot repair a failed connection or a malfunctioning driver.
Separate application and endpoint problems
Test another application with the same endpoint, then test the original application with a different endpoint if available. If only one application fails, consult that application’s support documentation; if every application fails on one endpoint, Windows device, connection, or driver troubleshooting is more relevant.
Microsoft’s broader troubleshooting steps are available in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Can I configure all audio devices at once?
No. Exclusive mode is a per-endpoint setting. A playback device and a recording device have separate properties, and two playback endpoints also retain independent settings.

For example, clearing the checkbox for USB headphones does not clear it for HDMI audio from a monitor. Likewise, changing a headset microphone does not change the headset’s speaker endpoint. Repeat the procedure for every endpoint whose behavior must differ.
Does disabling exclusive mode reduce sound quality?
Windows’ setting itself does not establish a universal quality penalty. Shared mode mixes streams and uses the endpoint’s available format, while exclusive mode lets an application control the endpoint directly. Audible or latency differences depend on the application, endpoint, driver, and format.
If you need low latency and simultaneous system audio, evaluate the application’s low-period shared-mode support before assuming exclusive mode is necessary. Microsoft specifically identifies low-period shared mode as a way to pursue latency comparable to exclusive mode while retaining shared access.
How do I restore the previous behavior?
Return to the same endpoint’s Properties > Advanced page, restore both exclusive-mode checkboxes to the states you recorded, select Apply, and then OK. Reopen the affected application and test again.
If you no longer know the original state, use the application’s documented requirement as the deciding factor: allow exclusive access only when it needs it, and disable it when concurrent Windows and application audio is the priority. Avoid changing unrelated endpoints while restoring one device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will exclusive mode make my headphones louder?
The Windows permission controls endpoint access, not a guaranteed volume increase. Loudness still depends on the application’s volume, Windows volume, the endpoint, and its driver.
Why does changing Playback not fix my microphone problem?
Playback and Recording are different endpoint categories. A microphone must be configured from the Recording tab, even when it is built into the same headset as the speakers.
Do I need exclusive mode for a USB audio interface?
Not automatically. Use the interface or application’s documented mode requirements; many setups work in shared mode, while a specific workflow may request exclusive access.
Why do other sounds stop when my audio program starts?
The program may be opening an exclusive-mode stream and taking the endpoint from shared-mode applications. Clear the exclusive-control permission or, if exclusive access is required, clear the priority option to test whether preemption is the cause.
