To stop a VPN from charging you again, cancel it in the service that processed the payment: the VPN provider’s account for a direct purchase, Apple Subscriptions for an iPhone or iPad purchase, Google Play Subscriptions for Android, or the relevant Amazon subscription page for an Amazon purchase. Uninstalling the VPN app does not cancel billing. After you cancel, save the confirmation or status showing that renewal is off; your access will normally continue until the already-paid term ends.
The menus differ by billing channel, so first identify who appears on your receipt or bank statement. Then use the matching procedure below and verify the result before the next renewal date.
Where should I cancel my VPN subscription?
Cancel in the place that bills you, not necessarily in the app you use. A subscription bought on a VPN website is controlled from the provider account; one bought through Apple or Google is controlled by that store. If the provider’s account has no cancellation control, that is a strong sign that an app store or another marketplace owns the subscription.

Use the account that owns the purchase. Being signed in to the VPN app, Apple Account or Google Account on a device does not prove that it is the account being billed.

How do I find out who is billing me?
Check the original order email, invoice, or bank and card statement before opening cancellation menus. The merchant name identifies the correct control panel, while the renewal date tells you how urgently to act.
Check the receipt or invoice
A receipt from Apple, Google Play or Amazon means the store normally controls renewal. A receipt addressed directly from the VPN company usually indicates direct billing. Search your email for the service name plus words such as “receipt,” “invoice,” “subscription,” or “renewal.”
Check the account that owns the purchase
On an iPhone, review each Apple Account you have used on the device if the subscription is missing. On Android, open Google Play with the Google Account that originally subscribed; Google’s help specifically requires using the account that owns the subscription. If you manage several VPN accounts, sign in to each provider account until the one with the matching renewal date appears.

Do not use app activity as proof
An app can remain installed and signed in after its subscription is canceled. Conversely, removing the app does not cancel billing. Google Play states, “When you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.” Treat the billing record—not the presence or absence of the app—as authoritative.
How do I cancel VPN auto-renewal on an iPhone or iPad?
For an Apple-billed VPN, open the device’s subscription list: Settings > your name (Apple Account) > Subscriptions > the VPN > Cancel Subscription. Complete the prompts and keep the resulting status or confirmation.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.
What if the Cancel Subscription button is missing?
Apple says that if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled. Record the expiration date shown on that screen. A VPN can continue working until that date, so an active connection does not mean Apple will renew it.

What if the VPN is not listed?
Check that you are viewing Subscriptions under the Apple Account used for the purchase. If the receipt came from the VPN provider, the subscription is probably direct-billed and must be canceled on the provider’s website. If another Apple Account owns the purchase, sign in to that account rather than trying to cancel from the VPN app.

When should I cancel an Apple-billed trial?
Cancel before the trial’s stated end time. ExpressVPN advises canceling an app-store subscription at least 24 hours before the end of a free trial or the next billing date to avoid a charge. The exact cutoff can depend on the store and the transaction, so do not wait until the final hours.
How do I cancel a VPN subscription on Android?
For a Google Play purchase, use the Google Account that owns the subscription and go to Google Play > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > the VPN > Cancel subscription. Finish every confirmation screen.
- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile icon and verify that the correct Google Account is selected.
- Open Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions. Some Play versions expose Subscriptions directly.
- Select the VPN.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the prompts. If Google asks for a reason, choose one and continue until the cancellation is submitted.
How can I tell whether Google Play canceled it?
Reopen the VPN under Subscriptions and look for a canceled state or an end date. Save a screenshot or the confirmation email. The VPN may still authenticate until the paid period ends; that continued access is not evidence that auto-renewal is active.
Why does uninstalling the Android app not work?
Uninstalling removes the software but leaves the Google Play billing agreement in place. Google Play explicitly warns that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription, so always use the Subscriptions record.
What if the subscription does not appear in Google Play?
Switch to the Google Account shown on the original receipt and check again. If no Google Play record exists, the payment may have gone directly to the VPN provider or through another marketplace. Use the merchant named on the receipt rather than canceling an unrelated subscription.

How do I turn off auto-renewal when I paid the VPN directly?
Use a browser and sign in to the VPN provider’s website, rather than relying on the mobile or desktop app. Open the area labeled Billing, Subscription or My subscription, choose the cancellation control, confirm, and verify that renewal is off.
- Open the provider’s website in a browser.
- Sign in to the account associated with the receipt and current renewal date.
- Open Billing, Subscription, or a similarly named account section.
- Choose Cancel auto-renewal, Cancel subscription, or the equivalent control.
- Complete the confirmation questions and continue until the site displays a final result.
- Check for an Off, Canceled, or expiration status and save the confirmation email or a screenshot.
NordVPN direct-billing path
For a direct purchase, sign in to Nord Account, open Billing, select Cancel next to auto-renewal, and choose Cancel auto-renewal to confirm. The service states that a confirmation email is sent after a successful cancellation. Verify that the account status changes to Off.
ExpressVPN direct-billing path
Open My subscription, sign in, select Cancel subscription below Automatic renewal, and follow the prompts. ExpressVPN says the service remains usable through the last day of the current cycle and that you will not be billed automatically for another subscription cycle after cancellation.
Why is there no cancel control on the provider website?
The subscription may have been purchased through Apple, Google Play or Amazon. Return to the store’s subscription manager and use the account that made the payment. A provider’s support team can help identify the billing channel, but the actual cancellation control may remain with the marketplace.
How do I cancel a VPN bought through Amazon?
If Amazon appears on the receipt, manage the subscription in the Amazon account that was charged, not in the VPN’s account page. Open Amazon’s subscription-management area, select the VPN, and follow the cancellation prompts until a canceled status or end date appears.
If the VPN is absent from Amazon, check whether the receipt actually came from the VPN provider or an app store. Save the Amazon confirmation when cancellation succeeds. Refund questions should go to the merchant responsible for the transaction; canceling renewal and requesting a refund are separate actions.

Will canceling auto-renewal stop my VPN immediately?
Usually, no. Turning off renewal generally prevents the next charge while leaving access available through the current paid term. ExpressVPN explicitly says service remains usable through the last day of the current cycle. The expiration date shown by the billing service is the date that matters.

You normally keep the subscription’s paid benefits until the displayed expiration date, even though the status says canceled or renewal is off. Do not cancel again merely because the app still connects. If access ends earlier than the date shown, contact the billing provider with the cancellation confirmation and transaction details.
Can I keep using the VPN after canceling?
Yes, when the provider or store shows an end date in the future. You can continue using the service during that period without creating a new subscription. At the end date, the account may move to a free tier or lose paid features according to the provider’s terms.
How can I verify that I will not be charged again?
Verification should be a separate step from clicking Cancel. Look for a status that says Off or Canceled, an expiration date, a red expiration message in Apple Subscriptions, or a confirmation email from the provider or store.
- Return to the same billing page after completing cancellation.
- Confirm that the next renewal date has been replaced by an end date or that renewal is marked off.
- Save a screenshot showing the account name, service and status. Avoid exposing full card numbers or other sensitive data.
- Keep the confirmation email and original receipt until the next billing date has passed.
- Check the bank or card statement after that date. If a new charge appears, contact the merchant named on that charge and provide the saved evidence.
An “active” label in the VPN app is not a contradiction: it can describe remaining access rather than future billing. The billing page’s renewal status is the decisive signal.
What should I do if cancellation fails or the menu is different?
Different operating-system versions and provider account designs can rename menus, but the billing owner remains the same. Work through these checks before creating a second account or deleting the app.

The page loops or will not submit
- Try a browser instead of the VPN app, especially for a direct purchase.
- Sign out and back in to the account shown on the receipt.
- Complete every confirmation screen; closing a dialog early may leave renewal enabled.
- Capture the error message and the attempted time if you need support.
The provider says it cannot cancel the plan
Ask which channel owns the billing record and check Apple, Google Play or Amazon with the matching account. If the provider confirms that it cannot control a store-billed plan, cancel it in that store rather than requesting the provider to remove your account.
I see two VPN subscriptions
Compare each listing’s merchant, renewal date and receipt. Cancel only the subscription you no longer want, and verify both records separately if you intentionally have more than one plan. Removing one app does not identify or cancel another subscription.
I was charged after I thought I canceled
Check the cancellation timestamp against the renewal date and identify the merchant on the charge. A cancellation made after the store or provider’s cutoff may not prevent that cycle’s payment. Contact the billing merchant promptly with the confirmation and ask about its refund process; eligibility varies by provider, platform, country and transaction.

No. Cancellation and a refund are separate requests. Turning off auto-renewal prevents future cycles but does not, by itself, reverse a payment already processed.
Refund eligibility depends on the provider, the store that processed the transaction, your country and the transaction details. Use the refund process for the same merchant shown on the receipt: Apple for an Apple transaction, Google Play for a Google transaction, Amazon for an Amazon transaction, or the VPN provider for a direct purchase. Do not assume that a successful cancellation guarantees money back.
What is the safest cancellation checklist?
- Identify the billing merchant from the receipt or statement.
- Open the matching account with the Apple Account, Google Account, Amazon account or provider login that made the purchase.
- Cancel from the account’s subscription controls, not by uninstalling the app.
- Finish all confirmation prompts.
- Verify Off, Canceled, an expiration date or Apple’s red expiration message.
- Save a screenshot and confirmation email.
