Microsoft Family Safety is not controlled by a single Off switch in Windows 11. Its restrictions are managed through the Microsoft family group, either from account.microsoft.com/family or the Microsoft Family Safety app.

The steps below cover the separate controls: activity reporting, website filtering, screen-time limits, app and game limits, and removing an account from the family group. You must be a family Organizer to change restrictions imposed on another member. A Member generally cannot remove those restrictions independently.

Before you start: identify your Family Safety role

Sign in at account.microsoft.com/family. Family Safety uses two roles:

Role What it can do
Organizer Manage screen time, website and search filters, app and game limits, purchases, consent, and other family settings.
Member Use the family group, but generally cannot disable restrictions imposed by an organizer.

If you are an adult member rather than an organizer, the organizer must change the settings for you. There is no supported Windows 11 switch that overrides organizer-enforced controls.

Turn off Microsoft Family Safety activity reporting

Activity reporting is separate from screen-time and content restrictions. Disabling it stops usage reports from being shared with the organizer, but it does not remove limits or filters.

Using the Family Safety website

  1. Sign in as an organizer at account.microsoft.com/family/home/settings.
  2. Select the relevant family member.
  3. Open each applicable platform tab: Windows, Xbox, Edge, or Mobile.
  4. Turn Activity reporting off.

Using the Family Safety app

  1. Open Microsoft Family Safety.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select Settings in the upper-right corner.
  4. Turn off Activity reporting for the required platform, such as Windows, Xbox, Mobile, or Edge.

Family Safety web and search activity reporting applies to Microsoft Edge when the family member is signed in to their Microsoft account. It is not a general browser-monitoring feature.

Turn off website and search filtering

Family Safety web filtering is managed under the member’s Edge settings.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard.
  2. Select Family Safety from the left-side menu.
  3. Find the family member.
  4. Select More (…) next to the member’s name.
  5. Select Go to overview.
  6. Open the Edge tab.
  7. Turn Filter inappropriate websites and searches off.

On the same page, review these related options if they are enabled:

  • Blocked Sites: remove individual blocked websites.
  • Allowed sites: edit or remove allow-listed websites.
  • Only use allowed websites: turn this off to stop allow-list-only browsing.
  • Always allow educational websites: disable this separately if it is no longer needed.

These web and search controls are designed for Microsoft Edge while the member is signed in. Turning them off does not automatically change screen-time or app limits.

Turn off screen-time limits

From the web dashboard

  1. Sign in as an organizer at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Select the family member’s tile.
  3. Choose the platform: Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  4. Select More (…) beside the relevant schedule or limit.
  5. Select Turn limits off.

From the mobile app

  1. Open Microsoft Family Safety.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select Windows or Xbox.
  4. Select More (…).
  5. Select Turn limits off.

Mobile screen-time controls apply to Android devices according to Microsoft’s current instructions. Screen-time settings affect devices connected to the family group. If a limit appears to run too quickly, remember that Microsoft can count time while the user is signed in, including idle time. On Xbox, the timer can continue while the account remains signed in.

Turn off app and game limits

  1. Go to family.microsoft.com and sign in as an organizer.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  4. Open Apps and games.
  5. Turn off the App and game limits toggle.

App and game limits are separate from website filters and screen-time schedules. Depending on the platform and account setup, they can apply across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices.

Remove an account from the Microsoft family group

Removing someone from the family group is more extensive than turning off one setting. It removes their access to Family Safety features and to shared products or services supplied by other family members, such as a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. It does not delete their Microsoft account.

Remove your own account

  1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Select More (…) next to your name.
  3. Select Leave family group.
  4. Select Remove to confirm.

Remove another member as an organizer

  1. Sign in to the family page with an organizer account.
  2. Select More (…) next to the person’s name.
  3. Select Remove from family group.
  4. Select Remove to confirm.

If Remove from family group is missing for a child account, first select Remove consent for this child’s account. Return to the family group afterward and try Remove from family group again. The adult account that originally granted consent may need to perform this step.

Fix Family Safety restrictions that remain on an adult account

Sometimes an adult account is no longer shown in the family group, or has the organizer role, but Windows still applies old Family Safety settings. Microsoft’s documented refresh procedure is to run the Family Safety scheduled task and restart the computer.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type cmd and select OK.
  3. Run this exact command:
schtasks /run /tn "MicrosoftWindowsShellFamilySafetyRefreshTask"
  1. Restart Windows.

Run the procedure on each affected device. The command refreshes the local Family Safety state; it does not give a member permission to override an organizer’s current settings.

Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history

Turn off Store my activity history on this device to stop Windows from storing local activity history. This does not disable Family Safety activity reporting, screen-time limits, app and game limits, or Edge web filtering.

The Send my activity history to Microsoft option was deprecated for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 by the January 23, 2024, KB5034204 update. Some earlier builds may still display it, but changing it is not a Family Safety control.

What to check when the settings do not work

Problem Likely cause or fix
You cannot turn off a restriction. You are probably signed in as a Member. The organizer must change organizer-enforced settings.
Restrictions remain after leaving the family. Run the FamilySafetyRefreshTask command and restart the affected computer. Repeat on every device.
A child cannot be removed. Remove consent for the child account first. The adult who granted consent may need to do this.
Reports do not include browsing in another browser. Family Safety web and search reporting is documented for Edge when signed in, not for every browser.
A child can change Family Safety settings. Check whether the child account has administrator privileges. Change it to a standard user through Settings > Accounts > Other users > [child account] > Change account type > Standard user > OK.

Uninstalling an app is not Microsoft’s documented method for removing Windows enforcement. Use the family dashboard for account settings and the scheduled-task refresh procedure for stale restrictions.

FAQ

Is there a Windows 11 switch to turn off Microsoft Family Safety?

No. Microsoft manages Family Safety through the family-group website and Family Safety app. Windows 11’s Activity history setting is separate and does not disable Family Safety.

Can a Family Safety member disable restrictions without the organizer?

Generally, no. An organizer must change organizer-enforced screen-time, content, and app settings for a member. An adult member does not currently have a documented self-service override.

Will turning off activity reporting remove screen-time limits?

No. Activity reporting only controls whether usage reports are shared. Screen-time schedules, app and game limits, and web filters must be disabled separately.

Does removing someone from the family group delete their Microsoft account?

No. It removes the account from the family group and may remove access to shared subscriptions and Family Safety features, but it does not delete the Microsoft account.

Why are Family Safety restrictions still active after an adult leaves the family?

Windows may still have stale local Family Safety data. Run schtasks /run /tn "MicrosoftWindowsShellFamilySafetyRefreshTask" in Command Prompt, restart the computer, and repeat the process on every affected device.

The Bottom Line

To turn off Microsoft Family Safety, use the organizer account at account.microsoft.com/family. Disable each required control—activity reporting, Edge filtering, screen-time limits, and app or game limits—individually. If you want to end the relationship entirely, leave or remove the account from the family group. For restrictions that remain on an adult account, run the documented FamilySafetyRefreshTask command and restart Windows.
