There is no single switch that turns off every Microsoft Copilot feature. Choose the instructions for where you see Copilot—Windows, Edge, a Microsoft 365 app, or the personal Copilot app—and note that removing an icon, limiting page access, and disabling an app feature have different effects.
Choose the Copilot control that matches what you want to stop

Remove the Copilot app from Windows 11
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Copilot.
- Select the three-dot More options menu beside the app, then choose Uninstall.
Microsoft says the Copilot app may be installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs. Uninstalling it removes the standalone app from that device, not every Copilot feature in Edge or Microsoft 365. For consumer PCs, use the Settings route rather than legacy registry or policy workarounds. Microsoft marks the older TurnOffWindowsCopilot policy deprecated and directs administrators to current app-management guidance instead: Microsoft Learn: Updated Windows and Microsoft Copilot Chat experience and WindowsAI Policy CSP.
Change the Windows Copilot key or shortcut
If your goal is to prevent an accidental launch, change the shortcut instead of uninstalling the app. Microsoft documents the setting at Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts. The Copilot key and Windows+C are launch methods; available choices can depend on the device and account configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows Copilot access guidance.
Stop Copilot in Edge from using webpage context
- In Edge, open More (…) > Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, its title, open tabs, or browser history in responses. If you only want to remove the toolbar entry, use Edge’s separate appearance control for showing the Copilot button. That hides the button, not necessarily the feature. For managed organizations, Microsoft documents an EdgeCopilotEnabled policy. When disabled, users cannot use Copilot in Edge; when enabled, users cannot switch it off through the settings page. The policy reference lists support for Android and iOS versions 123 and later, and says Windows and macOS are not supported by this particular policy. It is not a universal desktop Edge setting. Turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 desktop apps
For personal Microsoft accounts, supported desktop versions have an Enable Copilot checkbox. The setting is separate for each app and device.

Windows
- Open the app and go to File > Options > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot and confirm.
- Restart the app.
Mac
- Open the app menu and select Preferences > Authoring and Proofing Tools > Copilot, where available.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Restart the app.
Microsoft’s availability list published March 13, 2025 named Windows Word 2412, Excel 2501, PowerPoint 2501, and OneNote 2502; on Mac it named Word 16.93, Excel 16.93.2, and PowerPoint 16.93.2. These are dated availability thresholds, not a statement of the latest versions. Microsoft says the checkbox is not available in iOS, Android, or web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; check your installed version because availability can change. Removing the Copilot ribbon icon is only a visual change. If the checkbox is missing, Microsoft’s documented privacy fallback is to disable Experiences that analyze content in Microsoft 365 account privacy settings:

- Windows: File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Mac: In app preferences, open Personal Settings > Privacy > Connected Experiences.
Restart your apps after changing the setting. This is broader than Copilot: it can also affect features such as Outlook suggested replies, Word text predictions, PowerPoint Designer, and automatic image alt text. Microsoft says the app-specific controls described above are not available when signed in with a work or school account. Organization policy may govern which experiences are available. The cited guidance also says there is currently no estimated date for an on/off toggle in classic Outlook on Windows; Outlook controls differ across versions and platforms. Adjust privacy controls in the personal Copilot app
For the updated personal Copilot app available as of August 18, 2026, open Settings > Personalization. Turn off Saved memories or One shared experience as applicable. Turning off saved memories does not delete memories already stored: use Manage > Delete all memories to remove them. Personalized advertising is a separate control. Microsoft’s separate older-app privacy article covers distinct settings for personalization and memory, usage data, training opt-out, chat history, and ads, and explicitly does not apply to the updated app. In that older version, opting out of training did not necessarily turn off personalization, and disabling personalization did not automatically control personalized advertising. If Copilot settings are missing or do not work
- Confirm which product you are changing: Windows, Edge, a specific Microsoft 365 desktop app, or personal Copilot.
- Check whether you are signed in with a personal account or a work/school account; organization policies can control settings.
- In Microsoft 365, check the app and version, then restart after changing a setting.
- Do not treat a hidden button or changed shortcut as proof that Copilot is disabled elsewhere.
- Before turning off connected experiences, consider the non-Copilot features that may stop working too.
