To turn off Samsung’s AI photo-editing tools, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Photo assist and switch Photo assist off. On some Galaxy phones and tablets, you must first open Settings > Advanced features, then choose Galaxy AI or Awesome Intelligence. If you only want to prevent photos from being sent to Samsung’s cloud, use Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device instead; that setting restricts processing location but does not disable Photo Assist. Menu names and available switches vary by model, carrier, region and One UI version.
How do I turn off Galaxy AI photo editing?
The main control is the Photo assist switch in the Galaxy AI settings. It disables the Gallery’s AI photo tools, including Generative Edit, on devices that expose the control.
- Open Settings. You can launch it from the app drawer or the gear icon in Quick settings.
- Open the Galaxy AI controls. On many recent Galaxy models, tap Galaxy AI directly. On other software builds, go to Advanced features first, then tap Galaxy AI or Awesome Intelligence.
- Tap Photo assist. This is Samsung’s control for the AI-powered photo-editing tools.
- Switch Photo assist off. If your phone shows separate switches instead of one master switch, turn off the individual photo feature you do not want, such as Generative Edit.
- Restart the phone or tablet if the change is not immediately visible. Samsung’s support guidance notes that a restart can be needed before the feature disappears from the relevant app.
After the switch is off, open Gallery and edit a test image. The AI editing commands should no longer be offered on a supported device. Normal, non-AI Gallery functions such as browsing, cropping or ordinary adjustments are separate controls and can remain available.
What if my Settings app uses different labels?
Samsung changes menu names and locations between Galaxy models and One UI releases. Look for the terms Galaxy AI, Awesome Intelligence, Photo assist or Generative Edit in Settings search. A carrier-customized build or regional software package can expose fewer controls than the screenshots in an online guide.

Which Galaxy AI photo features does Photo assist control?
Photo Assist and Gallery’s generative tools can suggest edits and make substantial changes to an image. Samsung describes functions that can remove unwanted objects, move or resize objects, expand the frame and generate new content. Turning off Photo assist removes access to those AI editing functions where the switch is supported.

Generative Edit saves its result as a copy rather than overwriting the original image. Samsung also says AI-generated images carry an AI watermark. Disabling the feature prevents new edits; it does not change the status of copies that were already created.
Samsung documents a technical limit for Generative Edit: results may be resized to up to 12 megapixels. The limit applies to the generated result, not as a promise that every source photo will be processed at that size.
How do I stop cloud processing without turning off photo editing?
If your concern is privacy or network processing rather than the editing commands themselves, use the device-only processing control. Go to Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device, then turn on the switch. Samsung describes this as a master control that limits Galaxy AI processing to the device when the feature supports on-device operation.

This is not the same as switching off Photo assist. Device-only processing can leave the photo tools visible while restricting where supported requests are processed. Conversely, turning Photo assist off removes the photo-editing feature but is not a general master switch for every Galaxy AI function.

Why can’t I find Photo assist or Generative Edit?
The absence of a switch does not necessarily mean you missed a step. Samsung says availability depends on the Galaxy model, carrier, region and One UI/software version. Photo-editing tools are limited to supported devices, so an older or otherwise unsupported device may not show Photo assist at all.
- Check the alternate menu path. Try Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy AI and look for Awesome Intelligence if Galaxy AI is not listed on the first Settings screen.
- Search Settings. Enter “Galaxy AI,” “Photo assist” or “Generative Edit.” Search results can reveal a feature nested under a different heading.
- Check the software build. A screenshot from another One UI version can show controls that your current build does not include, or omit controls that yours has added.
- Check device support. Samsung’s Gallery documentation identifies supported devices rather than promising the tools on every Galaxy phone and tablet.
- Remember account and internet requirements. Samsung lists a Samsung account and an internet connection as requirements for its generative Gallery tools. Those requirements affect use of the tools; they do not guarantee that a disable switch will be present.
Samsung also warns that some AI features are integrated into the system and cannot be disabled. Therefore, you may be able to turn off Photo assist while still seeing other AI-related suggestions or system functions.

How do I disable AI controls that still appear in Gallery?
Some Galaxy AI functions are exposed inside individual Samsung apps as well as in the central Settings menu. If Photo assist is off but an AI command remains in Gallery, open Gallery’s menu and settings and look for a photo-assistance, generative-editing or AI option. The exact label and location depend on the Gallery version.

- Open Gallery and tap its menu button.
- Open Settings or the section containing editing and assistant preferences.
- Turn off any remaining AI photo option that duplicates or supplements the system Photo assist control.
- Close Gallery completely and open it again. Restart the device if the command still appears.
Do not assume that every editing button is generative. Standard crop, rotate, brightness, contrast and similar adjustments can remain because they are not the same feature as Generative Edit.
What should I do if Galaxy AI photo editing still appears after I switch it off?
Use this sequence to distinguish a delayed interface change from a setting that controls a different part of Galaxy AI:
- Confirm the switch. Return to Settings > Galaxy AI (or the alternate Advanced features path) and verify that Photo assist is still off.
- Check for a separate Generative Edit switch. Some models list photo functions separately, so disabling one control may not disable another.
- Inspect Gallery’s own settings. App-level controls can remain active even when the central setting is changed.
- Restart the device. This reloads the system and Gallery components that may have cached the old state.
- Test a new edit. Existing generated copies can still be viewed and shared; the relevant test is whether Gallery lets you start another AI edit.
If the control is still present after those checks, it may be an integrated system function that Samsung does not allow you to disable on that model. Samsung specifically cautions that disabling AI features can affect device performance or functionality and that some AI features cannot be disabled.

No. The switch controls whether you can invoke the supported AI editing tools going forward. Generative Edit saves an edited result as a copy, so turning the feature off does not automatically delete those copies or restore them to the unedited originals.

To remove an AI-generated copy, delete it manually in Gallery. Keep the original if you may want to compare the generated version with the source; the two files are treated as separate results.

Turning off Photo assist is appropriate when you do not want generative commands in your editing workflow. The trade-off is that object removal, generative repositioning, frame expansion and related tools will not be available until you turn the setting back on.
- Privacy preference: Use Photo assist off when you do not want to use those AI editing functions at all. Use device-only processing when you want to keep supported AI features while limiting cloud processing.
- Workflow preference: Disable only an individual feature if you want to retain other Galaxy AI tools.
- Compatibility preference: Expect different controls on different Galaxy devices and software versions; do not treat another model’s menu as proof that your device supports the same switch.
- Editing preference: Conventional Gallery adjustments remain separate, so disabling generative tools does not turn Gallery into a view-only app.
Samsung’s support wording is deliberately qualified: disabling AI may affect device performance and functionality, and some AI functions are integrated and cannot be disabled. That means the practical result is model-specific rather than a universal “turn off every AI process” mode.
Can I turn Galaxy AI photo editing back on later?
Yes. Return to the same Galaxy AI settings page and turn Photo assist or the individual Generative Edit switch on again. If the control does not reappear in Gallery immediately, close and reopen the app or restart the device.

Re-enabling the feature does not retroactively modify existing photos. It simply makes the supported AI commands available for new edits, subject to the device’s account, internet, model and software requirements.

Will turning off Photo assist delete photos I already edited with Generative Edit?
No. Generative Edit creates a separate result, so disabling the feature leaves both the original and generated copy in Gallery. Delete any unwanted copy manually; the setting change does not perform file cleanup.
Can Generative Edit work without an internet connection?
Samsung’s Gallery documentation lists an internet connection and a Samsung account as requirements for its generative tools. Device-only processing changes where supported processing occurs, but it does not remove those stated access requirements.

Why does an AI watermark remain on a picture after I disable Galaxy AI?
The watermark belongs to the generated result that was created earlier. Turning off Photo assist prevents or limits future use of the tool; it does not rewrite metadata or pixels in an existing exported image.
Does “Process data only on device” disable every Galaxy AI feature?
No. It is a processing-location control for supported functions, not a universal feature-off switch. Photo Assist can remain visible unless you separately disable Photo assist or its individual photo controls.
Why do Galaxy AI settings differ between two Samsung phones?
Samsung varies Galaxy AI availability by model, carrier, region and One UI/software version. A feature can also be integrated into one device’s system and therefore lack the disable switch available on another model.
