To turn off Copilot in desktop Word, open the app’s Copilot settings, clear Enable Copilot, select OK, then close and restart Word. The control is available on supported versions of Word for Microsoft 365 when you’re signed in with a personal Microsoft account. Hiding or moving the Copilot button only changes where it appears; it does not disable Copilot.
Turn off Copilot in Word for Windows
- In Word, select File > Options > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot, then select OK.
- Close and restart Word for the change to take effect.
Microsoft lists Word version 2412 or later as the minimum for this checkbox on Windows. If you don’t see the Copilot page or setting, update Word and check again. Microsoft’s instructions for turning off Copilot cover the supported versions and setting.
Turn off Copilot in Word for Mac
- In the Word app menu, select Preferences > Authoring and Proofing Tools > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Close and restart Word.
Microsoft lists Word version 16.93 or later as the minimum for this checkbox on Mac. If the setting is missing, update Word and check that you’re signed in with a personal Microsoft account.
What the setting changes
The Enable Copilot checkbox is separate in each Microsoft 365 app and applies only to that app on that device. Turn it off separately in Word on every device where you want Copilot disabled. Microsoft says the setting affects anyone who uses that device.

The dedicated checkbox instructions apply to personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft says the control is unavailable for work or school accounts, and that the checkbox cannot be used to turn off Copilot in Word for the web, iOS, or Android. If you use one of those versions or an organization account, you may not have this control; check with your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator for available options.
Choose between turning Copilot off, changing privacy settings, or hiding the button

Use the broader privacy setting if the Copilot checkbox is unavailable
Microsoft documents a separate privacy control for experiences that analyze your content. This is broader than disabling Copilot in Word and can turn off useful features, including Word text predictions, Outlook suggested replies, PowerPoint Designer, and automatic alt text for images. Windows
- In Word, select File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content and confirm the change.
- Close and restart the app.
Mac
- In the Word app menu, select Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy > Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences.
- Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content and confirm the change.
- Close and restart the app.
Microsoft says a change to this setting in one app takes effect in other apps the next time they’re opened.

Removing the Copilot icon from the ribbon changes access and appearance, not whether Copilot is enabled. Microsoft says Copilot may still be available through other methods, such as the shortcut menu. The Dynamic Action Button is a consolidated entry point that Microsoft says is rolling out across Windows, Mac, and the web; moving or hiding it does not change Copilot’s capabilities.
