Most Edge AI controls are in Settings and more (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI, but there is no documented master switch that disables every AI feature. Turn off the controls you need: Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web for page and browsing-data access, then separately review the Copilot new tab page, Journeys, Inline Compose, shopping, and any Browse with Copilot availability.
The exact labels and options can differ by Edge version, region, subscription, device, and whether an organization manages the profile. The steps below identify what each switch actually changes so you can reduce AI access without assuming that one setting covers everything.
How do I turn off Copilot in Microsoft Edge?
Open Edge’s settings, go to Copilot and AI, and disable each feature you do not want. Start with Context Clues if your priority is preventing Copilot from using information about the page or your browsing activity.

- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner of Edge.
- Select Settings.
- In the settings navigation, select Copilot and AI.
- Turn off the individual options you do not want, such as Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web, Copilot new tab page, Journeys, and Collaborate with Copilot as you write on the web.
- For shopping features, use the separate privacy-and-services path described below.
Edge treats these as separate controls. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the others, and the presence of a Copilot button or another AI surface does not prove that it can read the current page.

Which setting should I change first?
Choose Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web first if you want to limit page and browsing-data access. Then disable the visible experiences you do not want, such as the AI new-tab page or writing assistance.

How do I stop Edge Copilot from using my browsing history and page content?
Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web under Settings > Copilot and AI. This is the principal privacy control for browsing context.
Microsoft describes Context Clues as potentially using the current URL, page title, page content, screenshots, and browsing history. With the setting off, Copilot cannot use that browsing data for page-based answers; suggestions become more generic instead.

- Copilot no longer uses the listed page and browsing signals to tailor page-based answers and suggestions.
- The Copilot feature itself is not necessarily removed from Edge; other controls remain independent.
- Existing prompts and Copilot responses can still be saved in conversation history according to Microsoft’s description. Turning off Context Clues controls access to browsing context, not every form of Copilot history.
Microsoft summarizes the principle as: “You control what Copilot can access.” If a page is already open, close tabs and clear browsing history when you want to remove information from the browsing context available to Copilot. Those actions do not amount to a universal Copilot shutdown.
How do I disable the Copilot new tab page?
In Settings > Copilot and AI, turn off Copilot new tab page. This option controls the new-tab experience separately from Context Clues and from any Copilot sidebar or button.
- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Select Copilot and AI.
- Switch off Copilot new tab page.
- Open a new tab to verify that the Copilot-focused page is no longer being presented.
If you also do not want Copilot-oriented journey content appearing in the browser, disable Journeys in the same settings area.

How do I turn off Copilot Journeys?
Use the Journeys switch in Settings > Copilot and AI. Journeys is documented as off by default, so some profiles will already show it disabled.

Microsoft says older Journeys and their underlying data are automatically deleted after 14 days (Microsoft information available in 2026). Disabling the feature prevents its use going forward, but it should not be interpreted as an instant deletion command for every Copilot record.
Do I need to change the new-tab setting too?
Yes, if your goal is to remove the broader Copilot-focused new-tab experience. Journeys and the Copilot new tab page are separate settings, so changing one does not switch off the other.
How do I disable Edge’s AI writing suggestions?
Turn off Collaborate with Copilot as you write on the web in Edge’s Copilot-related settings. This disables Inline Compose independently of Context Clues and the sidebar.
- Go to Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Open Copilot and AI or the Copilot-related settings section shown in your Edge build.
- Find Collaborate with Copilot as you write on the web.
- Turn the option off, then revisit a text field where Inline Compose appeared to confirm that the assistance is no longer offered.
If the wording is not identical, update Edge and check the Copilot and AI section again; Microsoft changes labels and placement as features move between releases.

Shopping controls are outside the main Copilot and AI page. Go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected experiences > Save time and money with Shopping in Microsoft Edge, then turn off the shopping option available in your build.

Microsoft is moving Edge shopping features into Copilot. Depending on your region and rollout stage, shopping-related surfaces can include price comparison, price history, tracking, reviews, or cashback. Because availability is gradual and regional, the exact control may not appear for every account.
What if I do not see the shopping switch?
That usually means the feature has not reached your region or Edge channel, or Microsoft has presented it under a different label. Check the full Privacy, search, and services path rather than looking only under Copilot and AI; an organization-managed profile may also restrict the setting.
Can I disable Browse with Copilot?
Browse with Copilot is a separate action capability, not simply another Context Clues checkbox. It can click, type, and navigate on webpages, so its availability and controls depend on your account, market, Edge channel, and any organizational policy.
Microsoft says consumer access is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with additional markets to follow. If your account is eligible, follow the control presented in your Edge build; if no control appears, the feature may not be available to your subscription or region.
On a work profile, administrators can control Copilot availability and page-content access through policy. A missing switch can therefore be intentional rather than a browser error.
How do I remove the Copilot button or sidebar?
Microsoft’s documented controls focus on Copilot functions and data access, not a universal “remove every Copilot button” command. The available settings can disable Context Clues, the new-tab page, Journeys, Inline Compose, and shopping independently, but the documentation does not establish one switch that removes every visual entry point from every Edge build.

If a button or sidebar remains after you turn off the features you do not want, check whether your Edge version exposes a separate appearance or sidebar control. Do not assume that hiding a button changes what the account or organization permits; verify the Context Clues setting and any work policy separately.
Why can’t I see the Copilot setting in Edge?
Feature controls are not identical across all installations. The account type, geographic market, Microsoft 365 subscription, Edge channel or version, device, and organization policy can each affect what appears.
Check these conditions
- Personal versus work profile: an administrator may enforce Copilot availability or page-content access.
- Region: shopping features and newer action capabilities are rolling out gradually.
- Subscription: some capabilities, including the consumer Browse with Copilot rollout, are tied to subscription eligibility.
- Edge version or channel: labels and menu locations can change as Microsoft moves features.
- Profile state: confirm that you changed the settings in the Edge profile you actually use.
Restart Edge after changing settings and check the same profile again. If the option is still absent, there may simply be no user-facing switch for that feature in your current build or policy.
What does Edge Copilot still save or access after I turn features off?
Disabling Context Clues limits access to browsing context; it does not automatically erase conversation history. Microsoft says browsing context is not saved to conversation history, while the prompt and Copilot response are saved there.
To reduce the information available for future page-based suggestions, close relevant tabs and clear browsing history. For work profiles, data-protection rules set by the organization can take precedence over personal choices, and some controls may be locked.
Is there one switch that turns off every AI feature in Edge?
No documented universal switch covers every Edge AI feature across every build. Treat the settings as separate decisions: data access, new-tab content, journey organization, writing assistance, shopping, and action capabilities each have their own scope.

The practical approach is to open Copilot and AI, turn off every unwanted option there, then inspect the shopping path under Privacy, search, and services. Finally, test a new tab, a text field, and a shopping page so you can identify which surfaces remain enabled.
What is the quickest way to verify that Copilot is disabled?
Use a short verification checklist after changing settings:
- Reopen Settings > Copilot and AI and confirm the switches you intended to change are off.
- Open a new tab and check whether the Copilot new-tab experience is gone.
- Visit a page with a text box and confirm that Inline Compose no longer offers assistance if you disabled it.
- Check a shopping page for price, tracking, review, or cashback prompts if shopping was part of your concern.
- On a work profile, ask the administrator whether policy controls override the local setting.
This test distinguishes a disabled feature from a feature that is unavailable, managed elsewhere, or still rolling out.

Does turning off Context Clues delete my Copilot chats?
No. The setting limits Copilot’s use of page and browsing signals; it is not described as a command to erase conversation history. Prompts and responses may remain in that history unless you manage them separately through the account or product controls Microsoft provides.
Why does Copilot still appear after I disable browsing-data access?
Context Clues controls what Copilot can use from webpages and browsing activity, not whether every Copilot entry point is displayed. The new-tab page, writing assistance, shopping surfaces, and action features have independent availability and settings.
Can my employer turn Copilot back on in Edge?
A work administrator can govern Copilot availability and access to page content through policy. If a switch is locked, missing, or returns after you change it, the profile may be organization-managed rather than malfunctioning.
Will these settings be identical on every computer I use?
Not necessarily. Edge labels and controls can differ by version, channel, region, subscription, device, and profile policy, so check the settings on each installation instead of assuming that one visible switch represents all AI features.
