To stop new ChatGPT conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models, open your account menu, choose Settings, open Data controls, turn off Improve the model for everyone, and select Done. On iPhone and Android, open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, choose Data controls, and switch off the same control. For a conversation that should not appear in history, start a Temporary Chat instead. Turning off model improvement does not delete existing chats, and Temporary Chats can still be retained for safety for up to 30 days.
How do I turn off ChatGPT training on the web?
The setting that controls model-improvement use is called Improve the model for everyone. It is available in ChatGPT’s account settings for personal accounts.
- Open ChatGPT and sign in.
- Open the account menu. Depending on the current interface, this is your profile name or profile icon.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
- Select Done to close settings.
With the switch off, OpenAI says new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models. The change is tied to a signed-in account, so it applies when you use that account on another supported device.

- Open the ChatGPT app and open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
The mobile control has the same effect as the web control. If a label or menu position differs slightly after an app update, look for Data controls inside the profile or settings area rather than changing a chat’s individual options.

Can a signed-out user opt out?
Yes. Signed-out users can change the choice in ChatGPT settings, and the preference is saved in that browser. It is not an account-wide setting until you sign in; a different browser or cleared browser data may not retain the same choice.
What does turning off “Improve the model for everyone” actually do?
It stops eligible new conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models. It does not make regular conversations disappear, erase the account’s chat list, or convert existing chats into Temporary Chats.
- New model-improvement use: off for new conversations after the setting is disabled.
- Regular chat history: remains available unless you separately remove chats.
- Archived chats: remain governed by the same model-improvement setting; archiving alone does not change training eligibility.
- Memory and personalization: controlled separately, so disabling model improvement does not by itself disable remembered details.
OpenAI describes the result this way: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The wording matters: the control addresses future model-improvement use, not the existence of your saved conversation history.

Can I keep my chat history while stopping training?
Yes. Leave regular chat history enabled and turn off only Improve the model for everyone. Your normal conversations can continue to appear in the account’s history while new conversations are excluded from model-improvement use under the account setting.
This is the practical choice when you want to return to a conversation later, search or reference its messages, or keep a work log without allowing new chats to help improve models. Do not archive a conversation as a substitute: archiving changes how it is organized, not the account’s model-improvement rule.
How do I hide one conversation from ChatGPT history?
Use Temporary Chat before sending the message. Temporary Chat is the history-free option for a single conversation and is separate from the account-wide model-improvement switch.
- Start a new chat.
- Select Temporary.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your message only after the Temporary label is active.
A Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes (OpenAI, 2026), so “not in history” does not mean that no short-term safety retention can occur.

What is the difference between Personalized and Unpersonalized Temporary Chat?
Personalized Temporary Chat can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins to tailor a response. Unpersonalized starts without that personalization context. Neither option creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary.
In rare high-risk situations, limited safety-relevant context may still be used. That exception is part of the safety operation of Temporary Chat and does not turn the conversation into a normal history entry.
What happens if I save a Temporary Chat?
Saving converts it into a regular chat. From that point, it follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. If Memory is enabled, the saved conversation may be used to personalize future responses, so save it only when you are comfortable treating it like an ordinary chat.
Which ChatGPT privacy option should I use?
The controls solve different problems. Use the account switch to keep normal history while opting out of model improvement; use Temporary Chat when the conversation should stay out of history; adjust Memory when the concern is personalization.

Can feedback still expose a conversation after I opt out?
Yes. If you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating after opting out, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train models. The feedback action therefore creates an exception to the general effect of the model-improvement switch.
For a sensitive conversation, avoid attaching a rating unless you accept that possibility. If you need to report a problem, review the conversation first and remove sensitive details from any feedback you decide to submit.
How do personal and managed workspaces differ?
Free, Plus, and Pro personal workspaces
For personal Free, Plus, and Pro workspaces, data sharing for model improvement is enabled by default. You can opt out in Data controls by switching off Improve the model for everyone.

OpenAI’s Privacy Portal also offers a Do not train on my content choice. OpenAI says either the in-product route or the Privacy Portal route is sufficient for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks. You do not need to complete both for the same opt-out request.

OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used by default to train its models. That default does not override the organization’s own rules.
- Workspace administrators may set retention periods.
- Organization policies may control who can access conversations.
- Memory, compliance, and audit requirements can differ from personal accounts.
- A company-managed workspace may apply settings that individual members cannot change.
If the conversation belongs to an employer, school, or healthcare organization, ask the workspace administrator which retention and access policy applies. The personal account toggle is not a substitute for understanding those rules.
How are model improvement, chat history, Memory, and Temporary Chat different?
Model improvement
Improve the model for everyone controls whether eligible new conversations help improve OpenAI models. It does not control whether you can see a conversation in your history.
Chat history
Chat history controls whether regular chats remain available in the account. Disabling model improvement does not remove those chats, and archiving only changes their organization.
Memory and personalization
Memory controls remembered details and personalization across conversations. A chat can be excluded from model improvement yet still participate in personalization if it is a regular chat and Memory is enabled. Temporary Chat prevents new memories from being created or updated while it remains temporary.
Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat combines no history, no new memory updates, and no model-improvement use while temporary. It still permits limited safety retention, and saving it turns it into a regular chat subject to ordinary settings.

What should I check if the setting seems not to work?
The switch is missing
Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Data controls, not under Memory or an individual conversation’s menu. In a managed workspace, an administrator may control the available options.
Old chats are still visible
That is expected when you only turned off model improvement. Existing regular chats remain in history; the switch changes how new conversations are used for model improvement rather than deleting your archive.
A conversation appeared in history
Check whether you started a regular chat instead of selecting Temporary before sending the first message. Temporary status must be active at the start; saving a Temporary Chat also converts it to a regular conversation.
You changed the setting while signed out
A signed-out preference is stored in that browser. If you switch browsers, clear site data, or later sign in, verify the setting again in the account or browser where you intend it to apply.
You gave a thumbs-up or thumbs-down
Remember that feedback can make the associated conversation eligible for training even after opting out. The feedback exception is separate from the normal account switch.
How can I verify the privacy choice before sending sensitive information?
- Open Settings > Data controls and confirm that Improve the model for everyone is off.
- For a conversation that must not appear in history, start a new chat and confirm the Temporary label before typing or pasting content.
- Choose Unpersonalized if you do not want existing personalization context used.
- Do not save the Temporary Chat if you want it to remain temporary.
- Avoid thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a sensitive conversation because the associated chat may be used to train models.
- If you are in a managed workspace, review the organization’s retention and access policy as well as your personal settings.
These checks address different layers: the account-wide model-improvement choice, the individual chat’s history status, personalization context, feedback, and workspace governance.

What is the safest practical setup for different needs?

Keep regular chats enabled and switch off Improve the model for everyone. This preserves ordinary history while applying the opt-out to new conversations.

I want a one-off conversation absent from history
Use a Temporary Chat and leave it unsaved. Pick Personalized only when existing memories or custom instructions are useful; choose Unpersonalized when you want to avoid that context.
I work in an organization-managed workspace
Use the workspace supplied by your organization and follow its retention and access rules. The default exclusion from model training does not tell you how long administrators retain messages or who can view them.
I want to prevent personalization as well as model improvement
Use Unpersonalized Temporary Chat for the individual conversation. For regular chats, review Memory and personalization controls separately because turning off model improvement does not disable them.

Does the opt-out cover Codex tasks as well as ChatGPT chats?
OpenAI says the Data controls choice and the Privacy Portal’s Do not train on my content choice are each sufficient for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks.
Who can change privacy settings in a company or school workspace?
Workspace administrators can impose retention, access, memory, and compliance policies. Those organization rules may limit what individual members can change from their own ChatGPT settings.
