To limit what an AI chatbot keeps or uses, change more than one setting: history or activity retention, model-training use, memory and personalization, voice and file handling, and any connected social-account data are separate controls. ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini publish clear consumer settings, while Claude, Meta AI and Grok controls vary by app, account and country. Turning off training is normally prospective; it does not erase existing conversations. Likewise, hiding a chat from history can still allow short-term processing for safety, service delivery, feedback or legal compliance. Use the service-specific steps below, then verify the current privacy page for your region and account type.
What is the difference between chat history, training, memory and deletion?
These labels describe different data flows. Treating them as one master switch is the most common privacy mistake.
- History or activity: controls whether conversations are listed in your account and whether an activity log is retained. Deleting a visible item does not necessarily erase every operational copy immediately.
- Model training: controls whether future conversations may be used to improve models. An opt-out generally does not remove old chats that are already in history.
- Memory and personalization: lets a service retain details or infer preferences to tailor future replies. Disabling training does not automatically clear saved memories or personalization profiles.
- Temporary or incognito modes: reduce persistence for a particular chat, but providers may still process or retain it for safety, abuse prevention, service delivery, feedback or legal obligations.
- Voice, uploads and connected apps: audio recordings, files and data fetched from another service can have their own retention and training choices.
- Feedback: a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written report can authorize a separate review workflow. Some providers continue to use a conversation for improvement when you voluntarily submit feedback, even after a general activity setting is off.
Before changing anything, identify whether you use a personal, business, education or workplace-managed account. An administrator can set defaults or retain records that you cannot change yourself.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using my conversations for training?
On a personal ChatGPT workspace, turn off Improve the model for everyone. This prevents new conversations from being used to train OpenAI’s models, while ordinary chats can still remain in your chat history.

- Open the account menu on the ChatGPT website or app.
- Select Settings, then Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
- Return to the same panel later to confirm the switch is still off after an app update or workspace change.
The account choice applies across signed-in web and mobile use. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, the choice is stored in that browser rather than attached to an account, so clearing browser data or changing browsers can remove the preference.
What should I use for a chat that should not appear in history?
Start a Temporary Chat before entering sensitive information. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to train models. Its published policy says they are retained for 30 days for safety purposes and then deleted, so “temporary” does not mean zero processing or immediate erasure.
Are voice chats and managed workspaces covered?
Voice has a separate training-sharing control; review it independently of the text-chat setting. Business, education and other managed workspaces can apply different defaults or administrative policies, so a personal-account walkthrough may not describe what your organization retains.

For signed-in consumer Copilot, disable both conversation and voice training in the privacy controls. This excludes future conversation activity from training, but it does not stop every other use of the data.
- On the Copilot website, select your profile icon and then your profile name.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations if you use voice.
- In desktop or mobile apps, look under Settings or Account > Privacy for the same controls.
Microsoft Support states: “Opting out will exclude your future conversation activities from being used for training these AI models.” Microsoft also says the opt-out does not exclude conversations from general product or system improvement, advertising, digital-safety, security and compliance purposes.
How long can Copilot history remain?
Microsoft says consumer Copilot conversation history can be retained for 18 months. That period can change, so confirm the current support page when you publish or make a decision. You can delete individual entries or all history from the history controls; deleting the list is separate from the training switch.

Does turning off training disable memory?
No. Copilot can retain conversation history and use personalization even when training is disabled. Review memory or personalization controls and ad-personalization preferences separately, especially if you want responses to stop reflecting previous interactions.
How do I stop Gemini Apps from saving activity?
Use Gemini Apps Activity. Turning Keep Activity off prevents future chats from appearing in Activity and Google says those chats are not used to train its AI models, unless you send feedback about them.
- On the web, open Settings & help, then Activity.
- On mobile, open the profile menu and choose Gemini Apps Activity.
- Switch Keep Activity off for a forward-looking change.
- Choose Turn off and delete activity when you also want Google’s activity records removed according to its deletion process.
What happens after Keep Activity is off?
Google says conversations may still be saved with your account for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback and protect Google, users and the public. Therefore, the setting hides future activity and changes training use but is not an instant-erasure promise.
What if I leave Keep Activity on?
Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to three months, 36 months or disable auto-delete. Data reviewed by service providers is disconnected from your account and saved for three years, according to Google’s published explanation.
Are all Gemini features available with activity off?
No. Some connected-app capabilities are unavailable when Keep Activity is off. Work or school accounts may be governed by an administrator, with different retention and training terms than a personal Google account.
How do I opt out of training in Claude?
Recent consumer guidance describes a route through Settings > Privacy > Help improve Claude, with an option that excludes future conversations from training. Because the exact label and location can change, open Anthropic’s current privacy or help documentation in your account before relying on this path.

- Open Claude’s account settings.
- Look for Privacy and then Help improve Claude (the wording may differ by version).
- Disable the improvement or training option and save the change.
- Use the service’s Incognito mode for conversations you do not want associated with normal history, if that mode is offered in your account.
Secondary reporting also describes a safety-classifier exception. In practical terms, an opt-out may still allow automated safety processing. Consumer, business and API terms are not interchangeable; an organization’s Claude workspace can have administrator-controlled retention and access.
What privacy controls does Meta AI provide?
Meta AI controls depend heavily on geography and the product surface where you use it. The available material does not support a universal, country-neutral switch.
United States and other regions
Reports describe no simple US conversation-level opt-out comparable to the Gemini activity switch. Do not assume that deleting a Meta AI thread changes how public posts, comments or other platform activity are handled.
European Union and United Kingdom
EU and UK users have been directed toward a privacy-rights objection process. That is a rights request, not necessarily an instant deletion or a setting that covers every Meta product. Use Meta’s current Privacy Center instructions for your country and keep a record of the request and response.
Which data should you separate?
Review private messages, direct conversations with Meta AI, and public posts or interactions as distinct flows. A control described for one app surface should not be treated as controlling all of them.
How do I separate Grok conversation data from X activity?
Grok and the X platform can involve two different data flows: your conversations with Grok and activity generated or posted on X. Disabling one does not disable the other.

- Open the privacy or data settings in the current Grok interface and look for controls covering conversation data, model improvement or personalization.
- Open X’s own privacy and data-sharing settings and review controls for public posts, interactions and other platform activity.
- Read the scope beside each switch; a Grok setting may not cover X posts, and an X setting may not erase Grok conversations already collected.
- Delete existing items through the applicable history or account tools after changing the forward-looking settings.
Menu names and scope are provisional because the interfaces change. Check current xAI and X documentation before giving or following an exact tap sequence, particularly for accounts used in more than one country.

The table describes the separation of controls, not a guarantee that a provider will retain nothing. Retention for safety, security, feedback or legal reasons can continue after a user-facing switch is turned off.
What should I do with voice, files and connected apps?
Apply the same “one data type, one control” rule to non-text inputs.
- Voice: ChatGPT and Copilot document separate voice-training choices. Turning off text training does not automatically cover recordings or transcripts.
- Uploads: Files can be stored under conversation history or a separate file area. Delete the file and the chat when the interface provides separate delete actions.
- Connected apps: Gemini disables some connected-app capabilities when Keep Activity is off. Other services may continue receiving data needed to perform an integration; disconnect the app if you no longer want that transfer.
- Social activity: Grok conversations and X activity are separate. Meta AI conversations and public Meta posts should likewise be reviewed independently.
- Feedback: Avoid sending thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback with sensitive content when you want the strictest limit; Gemini specifically states that feedback can permit use for model improvement even with Keep Activity off.
What changes for work, school and API accounts?
Consumer instructions do not automatically apply to managed accounts. A school or employer may control retention, logging, access, model-training terms and deletion rights. Workspace administrators can also export or preserve records for compliance.

- Check the organization’s acceptable-use and retention policy before entering confidential material.
- Ask the administrator whether chats are used for training, quality review or security monitoring.
- Do not move a sensitive workplace conversation to a personal account simply to bypass policy; that can create a separate compliance problem.
- For API use, read the provider’s API data-use terms rather than relying on consumer-app settings.
Why can a conversation remain after I turn a setting off?
Most switches are forward-looking, and several legitimate processing paths remain. Work through these checks before assuming the control failed.

- Confirm the account: Make sure you changed the same signed-in account, workspace and region where the conversation was created.
- Separate hiding from deletion: A training opt-out leaves visible history in ChatGPT and can leave history or personalization in Copilot.
- Check temporary retention: Gemini can retain chats for up to 72 hours after Keep Activity is off; ChatGPT Temporary Chats can be retained for 30 days for safety.
- Review feedback: A submitted rating or report may create a separate review record.
- Inspect other surfaces: Voice, uploads, connected apps and social-platform activity can have independent settings.
- Update the app: Providers move labels and menu locations. Use the current in-product privacy page rather than an old screenshot.
- Escalate a rights request: If you need deletion or access confirmation beyond self-service tools, use the provider’s official privacy request process and retain the confirmation.
How should I handle a sensitive conversation before changing settings?
Do not rely on a later opt-out to protect information already entered. Remove secrets, credentials, personal identifiers and regulated data from the prompt whenever possible.
- Use a temporary or incognito mode before starting, where available.
- Disable history and training controls before submitting the material, not afterward.
- Do not attach a file containing more information than the task requires.
- Disconnect integrations that are not needed for the answer.
- Afterward, delete the chat, uploaded file and related activity record through each applicable interface.
- For work or school data, follow the organization’s approved tool and incident-reporting process.

Does turning off AI training delete my old conversations?
Usually no. Training opt-outs generally apply to future conversations, while existing chats remain in history until you delete them through the service’s separate history controls. Deletion itself can still be subject to short-term safety, security or legal retention.
Can an AI chatbot still process a chat when history is off?
Yes. Providers may retain or process temporary copies to generate a reply, investigate abuse, protect users, handle feedback or meet legal obligations. Google describes up to 72 hours of post-setting processing for Gemini, and OpenAI describes 30 days for Temporary Chat safety retention.

Signed-in account settings usually follow the account across supported devices, but signed-out or browser-local choices may not. Check the privacy panel on each device after an app update, account switch or browser-data reset.
Can my employer read chats after I disable consumer privacy settings?
Possibly. Managed work or school accounts can have administrator logging, retention and export rules that override consumer controls. Check the organization’s policy and the provider’s business or API terms before entering confidential information.
Is deleting a chatbot account the same as deleting data immediately?
No. Account closure starts a provider-specific deletion process and may leave restricted records for safety, security, fraud prevention or legal compliance. Use the provider’s privacy-request channel if you need a documented explanation of what remains and for how long.
