Use each chatbot’s own privacy control; there is no universal opt-out. In ChatGPT, switch off Improve the model for everyone. In Claude, disable Help improve our AI models. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity. In Microsoft Copilot, disable both conversation-training controls. In Grok, turn off the data-sharing and training switch in X’s privacy settings. These controls generally affect future conversations, not data already used to train a model, and they do not necessarily delete chat history, memories, or account records.
This guide gives the current menu paths, explains what each setting actually changes, and covers temporary retention, feedback exceptions, safety processing, business accounts, and deletion options. Menu names and availability can vary by region, app version, account type, or administrator policy.
What does turning off AI training actually change?
A training opt-out tells a provider not to use eligible future prompts and responses to improve its general-purpose models. It is not the same as deleting a conversation, clearing saved memories, disabling personalization, or closing an account. A chat can remain visible in your history after training is disabled.

Some services retain a copy for a limited period even after you disable activity or use a temporary mode. Feedback tools can also create an exception: submitting a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or similar report may allow the associated conversation to be reviewed or used for training.

The safest workflow is to change the training setting first, avoid submitting feedback on sensitive chats, and then separately remove history, memories, files, or activity records you no longer want stored.
Which chatbot settings should I change?

How do I stop ChatGPT from training on my chats?
For a personal Free, Plus, or Pro workspace, switch off the model-improvement control in Data controls. New conversations will remain in your chat history but will not be used to train OpenAI models while the switch is off.
- Open the account menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Set Improve the model for everyone to Off, then select Done if the interface shows a confirmation.
The setting applies to future chats in that workspace. It does not erase previous conversations, uploaded files, saved memories, or other account data. Review those areas separately if your goal is removal rather than training exclusion.

Use the Temporary option for a one-off conversation that you do not want in normal history or memory. OpenAI states that Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve its models. OpenAI retains Temporary Chats for 30 days for safety purposes, so temporary does not mean immediate destruction.
What happens if I submit feedback?
If you send thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback after opting out, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train models. Do not submit feedback on a conversation you want excluded; report a safety issue only when you accept that the related chat may be reviewed under the provider’s feedback process.
How do I turn off Claude model training?
Anthropic’s privacy switch is separate from chat deletion and account controls. Turning it off prevents new chats and coding sessions from being used for future model training, but it cannot undo training that already occurred.

- Open the profile or name menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn Help improve our AI models off.
Anthropic says models that have already been trained are not rolled back when you change this preference. The company also says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used to develop trust-and-safety models and conduct related research. Therefore, the setting is a training opt-out for eligible future conversations, not a promise that no copy will ever be examined for safety.

Gemini uses the Keep Activity control for consumer activity storage and model-training eligibility. Turning it off stops future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity and prevents them from being used to train Google’s AI models, but Google keeps them for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public.
- Open Gemini.
- Select Settings & help.
- Choose Activity.
- With Keep Activity shown as on, select Turn off. If you also want to remove existing activity, choose Turn off and delete activity and follow the confirmation steps.
How long does Gemini keep activity?
For users aged 18 or over, Gemini Apps Activity is on by default. Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months, and the control can be changed to 3 months, 36 months, or disabled. Auto-delete is a history-retention choice; it does not replace the Keep Activity switch.
Are audio, Live video, and screen sharing covered?
Google provides a separate setting for using audio and Gemini Live video or screen-share data to improve its services. That improvement setting is off by default, so review it under Gemini Apps Activity if you use those features. Turning off text activity alone should not be treated as a review of every media-specific preference.
What does Gemini do with feedback?
Google says it may use feedback to process and improve its services even when Keep Activity is off. Avoid attaching sensitive details to feedback forms, and remove identifying information before reporting a problem whenever possible.

Copilot has separate controls for typed and voice conversations. Turn off both if you want the broadest consumer opt-out; disabling only one leaves the other category governed by its existing setting.

Web or desktop path
- Select your profile icon.
- Select your profile name.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations.
Mobile path
- Open the menu.
- Select the profile icon.
- Choose Account, then Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations.
Microsoft says the opt-out excludes future conversation activities from training these AI models. It does not exclude conversations from every other use: general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, and compliance processing can continue. Copilot personalization and memory are separate controls, so change those independently if you do not want responses tailored from retained information.
How do I stop Grok from using my prompts to train AI?
Grok’s consumer control is located in X privacy settings rather than in a standalone Grok menu. The setting covers public data and your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI for training and fine-tuning.
- Open X Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Under Data Sharing, disable Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says you can continue using Grok after opting out. It also cautions that the opt-out does not prevent a deployed model from learning through normal feature use, so do not treat the switch as a guarantee that outputs or system behavior will never change.

How do I delete Grok conversation history?
- Return to Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok.
- Choose Delete Conversation History and confirm.
X says deleted conversations are removed within 30 days unless security or legal retention is required. This deletion action is separate from the training switch.
Why should I avoid Grok feedback after opting out?
X says submitted thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback and related data may still be used for training. If a conversation must remain outside training, do not submit feedback on it; use a separate, non-sensitive example when you need to report a problem.
Is turning off training the same as deleting chats, memories, or account data?
No. Think of privacy controls as separate layers:
- Training: whether eligible future content can improve general models.
- History: whether a conversation remains visible in your account or activity log.
- Memory and personalization: whether the service stores details to tailor later responses.
- Uploads and files: whether documents, images, audio, or other attachments remain associated with your account.
- Account deletion: whether the provider begins its broader deletion process, subject to legal, security, or billing retention.
Disabling training usually changes only the first layer. Use the provider’s history, activity, memory, file, and account-deletion controls for the others. Deleting a visible chat may not immediately remove security logs or data already incorporated into a trained model.

What data can still be processed after an opt-out?
All five providers reserve some processing for operating and protecting their services. Safety and abuse detection, fraud prevention, security monitoring, debugging, legal requests, and compliance obligations can require temporary access or retention. The exact duration is service- and situation-specific; only the named periods above are stated in the providers’ current policies.
Feedback is a special risk because it intentionally sends a conversation into a review workflow. Treat feedback buttons as data-sharing actions, not merely as a private rating. Remove names, account numbers, health details, passwords, and confidential documents before submitting any report.
Do business and API accounts have different defaults?
Often, yes. Managed business workspaces and API services can exclude customer content from model training by default, while administrators control retention, identity access, audit logs, and whether employees can use consumer features. A personal opt-out does not automatically change an organization’s policy, and an organization’s policy does not protect content pasted into a personal account.
Before deploying a chatbot for work, ask the administrator or provider for the written terms covering training, human review, retention, regional processing, subprocessors, and deletion. Confirm which workspace or tenant you are using; a browser profile can silently open a personal account when you intended to use a managed one.

- Change the setting and capture the confirmation screen or note the date.
- Reopen the same menu to confirm the toggle remains off after refreshing or signing out.
- Check every device and workspace where you use the service; preferences may be account-, tenant-, or app-specific.
- For Copilot, verify both text and voice controls.
- For Gemini, review Keep Activity and the separate audio or Live-media improvement control.
- For ChatGPT, check whether you started a Temporary Chat when you need no history or memory.
- Do not test with confidential information. Use a harmless phrase and confirm only that the control remains disabled.
What if I cannot find the privacy switch?
First update the app or open the service in a desktop browser, because mobile and web menus can differ. Then check that you are signed into the intended account and workspace. A school, employer, family manager, or regional policy may hide or lock a control; an administrator must change managed settings.

Labels also change. Search the provider’s current privacy or data-controls help center from inside the signed-in account rather than relying on an old screenshot. If a setting is unavailable, assume the service’s default applies and avoid entering confidential information until you have written confirmation of the applicable policy.

What about chatbots without a documented control?
Do not copy a path from another service. Privacy settings are product-specific, and a switch that stops history in one chatbot may only disable personalization in another. For services not covered above, look for an official control explicitly mentioning model training, conversation improvement, or data sharing, then read its scope for text, voice, files, images, feedback, and retention.
No sufficiently specific current consumer opt-out path is established here for Meta AI, so this guide does not invent one. Until the provider documents a control that matches your account and region, keep sensitive content out of that service.
What is the safest practical setup?
For routine personal use, disable training in every chatbot you use, turn off memory or personalization when you do not need it, set the shortest practical auto-delete period, and reserve temporary-chat modes for sensitive one-off questions. Keep feedback separate from confidential conversations. For work, use an administrator-managed business or API workspace with a written retention policy, and never assume consumer settings carry over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I opt out after a chatbot has already trained on my conversation?
Usually, no. The controls described here govern eligible future content; Claude explicitly says already-trained models are not rolled back, and deleting a chat cannot remove information already incorporated into a model.
Will turning off training stop human reviewers from seeing my chat?
Not necessarily. Safety, abuse, security, legal, and feedback workflows can still permit limited review or retention. Avoid feedback on sensitive conversations and consult the provider’s current privacy terms for review conditions.
Do privacy settings follow me across multiple chatbot accounts?
No. Settings are generally tied to a specific account, workspace, tenant, or app. Check each account and device, especially when a work-managed login and a personal login are both available.
Should I use a temporary chat or delete my history?
Use a temporary mode before sending a one-off sensitive prompt when available; delete history afterward when you want the account view cleared. Neither action guarantees removal from safety logs, legal records, or a model that was trained before the change.
