Yes—if the phone still boots, charges and can play audio, you can repurpose it as a dedicated player for music stored on the device. Check the phone’s ports, storage, operating system and battery first; then transfer music, choose a compatible playback app and test the setup. A factory reset is optional, and the exact steps differ between Android and iPhone.
Check that the phone is suitable
Before deleting anything or buying accessories, confirm that the phone starts, charges and has enough free storage for the music you want to keep on it. Check how you will listen: a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack, Bluetooth headphones or a compatible wired-audio adapter.
Age alone does not tell you how long the battery will last. Test the particular phone while playing music, including with the screen off, and see whether its charging connection works reliably. Storage expansion, accessory support and the ability to install a playback app also depend on the model and its software.
Decide whether to reset it
A factory reset is not required to make a music player. If the phone is already clean and works, you can leave it as is. Resetting erases data and apps, so back up anything you need and confirm you can sign in to the associated Google Account before proceeding. Google recommends charging to at least 70%; completing setup after a reset may require a network connection. If the phone belongs to someone else or still contains their data, resolve ownership and backup before changing or resetting it.
Put music on the phone
Android: transfer files by USB
- Unlock the phone and connect it to a computer with a USB cable.
- On the phone, open the USB notification and select File Transfer.
- In the computer’s transfer window, drag the music files into a folder on the phone.
- Safely disconnect the phone, then open your chosen music app and check that the files appear and play.
Google’s instructions note that some cables cannot transfer files, and some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. If the phone does not show a file-transfer option, try a data-capable cable and consult instructions for its model and Android version: Transfer files between your computer and Android device.

iPhone: distinguish the Files app from a music library
iPhone can access files on supported USB drives and SD cards through the Files app when connected with compatible hardware; supported apps and file-system formats affect what works. That is not the same as importing tracks into a music library. The available library workflow depends on the iPhone, its operating system and where the music comes from, so there is no single transfer method established for every iPhone. Choose storage and audio connections
Start with the phone’s built-in storage. Whether you can add a microSD card or use external storage depends on the model. For iPhone, external USB drives and SD cards require a compatible connector or adapter and supported software; iPhones do not all accept an internally installed memory card.

For wired listening, a 3.5 mm headphone jack is the simplest option if the phone has one. A phone without a jack may work with a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, but compatibility varies by phone and adapter. Check the exact phone before buying; Samsung describes adapter use for its devices, not universal compatibility: Samsung guidance on using a USB-C headphone adapter.
Bluetooth avoids a cable between the phone and headphones, but you must pair the devices and keep the headphones charged. Choose whichever connection works reliably with the accessories you already have.

Set up playback and make the phone less distracting
Choose a music app that supports the phone’s operating system and your audio files. App availability changes with the phone’s model and software version, so check compatibility rather than assuming a particular app will run. Put the player somewhere easy to launch, such as the home screen.
If you want the device to behave more like a standalone player, disable notifications and connectivity you do not need. Keep in mind that turning off Bluetooth also disables wireless headphones, and some setup or account sign-in tasks may need a network connection.

- Play a representative selection of your music and confirm files open correctly.
- Try the wired or Bluetooth headphones you intend to use, including the phone’s volume and playback controls.
- Lock the screen and verify music continues playing.
- Check that charging works during playback if you expect to use the phone while plugged in.
- Measure battery life on this phone during normal listening; there is no dependable runtime to infer from age alone.
If playback stops with the screen off, check the music app’s background-playback or battery settings. If audio does not come through, verify the selected output, Bluetooth pairing or adapter compatibility before changing other settings.
