Most Zoom AI Companion Meeting Summary failures come from one of five conditions: the account is not eligible or an administrator has locked the setting, the host never started the feature, the app does not meet Zoom’s current minimum version, sharing rules exclude the recipient, or the meeting language is configured incorrectly. Check those in that order. Also remember that generating a summary and delivering it to a participant are separate steps.
This guide follows Zoom’s current support guidance for account access, meeting controls, delivery, language, and transcript settings. Availability and portal labels can vary by region, industry, account type, and rollout status, so use the linked Zoom pages to confirm the controls shown in your account.
Why is Zoom AI Companion Meeting Summary not working?

How do I check whether my Zoom account is eligible?
Meeting Summary requires an eligible licensed user and an enabled setting. Zoom lists licensed users on Zoom Workplace Pro, Pro Plus, Business, Business Plus, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus, and Enterprise Bundle plans as meeting-summary users, while noting that availability can vary for some industries and regions.
Verify the license and user type
- Ask the account owner or administrator which Zoom Workplace plan your user is assigned to.
- Confirm that you are a licensed user, not an unlicensed basic user attached to the account.
- If your organization recently changed plans, have the administrator recheck the user’s license assignment and wait for the account change to propagate before testing again.
These plan names are Zoom’s documented eligibility list, not a guarantee that every account in every country has the feature. Check Zoom’s Meeting Summary requirements for the current regional and industry qualifications.
Check personal, group, and account controls
Zoom exposes Meeting Summary controls at personal, group, and account levels. A higher-level administrator can disable the feature or lock the control, which makes it unavailable or greyed out for an individual user. Open the Zoom web portal’s AI Companion settings and inspect the Meeting Summary control at the level you can access; if it is locked, only an administrator can change it.
Administrators can use Enabling or disabling meeting summary with AI to check the account and group policy. If the option is absent even for an administrator, verify the plan, region, industry restrictions, and the current Zoom rollout before treating it as an app defect.
How do I turn on Meeting Summary in Zoom?
The host or a co-host must start or stop Meeting Summary from the in-meeting Zoom AI controls. An administrator can also configure an auto-start option, but merely having an eligible account does not create a summary unless the feature becomes active during the meeting.
Start it during a meeting
- Join the meeting as the host or co-host.
- Open the in-meeting Zoom AI controls and choose the Meeting Summary command.
- Confirm that the feature shows as active before the discussion you need summarized begins.
- At the end, stop it from the same controls if you do not want it to continue.
Only the host and co-host can start or stop Meeting Summary. A regular participant cannot repair a missing summary by opening the control, because that control is intentionally role-limited.

Use auto-start when appropriate
Zoom documents an auto-start option in its Meeting Summary settings. Have the host or administrator enable it before the meeting, then verify at the beginning of the call that the feature actually activated. Auto-start does not remove plan, permission, client-version, language, or delivery requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand the breakout-room limitation
Meeting Summary does not support breakout rooms. If the main meeting has a summary but a breakout discussion does not, that is expected behavior rather than a permissions failure. Keep the discussion in the main room when a summary is required, or capture the breakout conversation using an approved alternative that meets your organization’s privacy policy.
Why did my meeting end without a summary?
A summary is based on speech-to-text data collected while Meeting Summary is enabled. If the host or co-host never started it, if auto-start failed, or if it was stopped before the relevant discussion, Zoom has no enabled interval from which to create that part of the summary.
Confirm the active interval
- Ask the host when the Meeting Summary control was started and stopped.
- Check whether the discussion occurred before activation or after the feature was stopped.
- Confirm that the conversation took place in the main meeting rather than a breakout room.
Zoom states that starting and stopping the feature still produces a summary for the discussion during the enabled interval. That means a meeting can have a partial summary even when the opening or closing portion was not covered.
Check the client requirement
Zoom specifies minimum desktop and mobile app versions using its “Global minimum version” requirement and separately lists Zoom Rooms 5.16.0 or higher. Because Zoom can revise the global minimum, do not rely on an old number copied from another guide. Compare the installed app with the current requirement in Using Meeting Summary with AI, then update the desktop, mobile, or room client and run a short test meeting.

Why didn’t Zoom send me the meeting summary?
Delivery is separate from generation. Zoom can create a summary successfully while a particular participant receives no email because sharing is disabled, the participant was not signed in, or the person joined without being on the original invitee list.
Check sharing and destinations
- Ask the host whether summary sharing was enabled for the meeting.
- Search the email account associated with the signed-in Zoom profile, including spam and quarantine folders.
- Open Zoom Hub or the Zoom portal’s Summaries area and look for the meeting there.
- Check the meeting’s dedicated group chat if the meeting-chat setting permits access before and after the meeting.
- If you are the host, use the portal’s sharing controls to send the summary directly to the intended recipients.
Zoom says summaries can be sent by email and posted in the meeting’s dedicated group chat when the relevant chat setting allows it. The exact destinations visible to you depend on account policy and the way the meeting was configured.
Verify sign-in and invite status
Automatic email delivery requires the participant to be signed in. Unauthenticated attendees do not receive email summaries automatically. Zoom also excludes people who joined ad hoc and were not on the original invitee list from that automatic delivery route, even if they participated in the call.
Being present in the meeting therefore does not guarantee an email. Ask the host to share the summary through the portal or another approved channel when the recipient was a guest, joined without authentication, or was added after the original invitation.
Distinguish a missing message from a missing summary
If the summary appears in Zoom Hub or the meeting chat, generation worked and the problem is delivery. If it is absent from every destination, return to the account, activation, breakout-room, and client-version checks instead of repeatedly searching the inbox.
Why is my Zoom meeting summary in the wrong language?
Language output depends on the default summary language and on the meeting’s speaking and caption-language configuration. For a multilingual meeting, Zoom says the summary uses the majority language; when there is no clear majority, it uses the host’s speaking language.

Set the default summary language
Users can configure a default summary language where their administrator permits it. An administrator may set or lock the default for the organization. Review Configuring a default language for meeting summaries and compare the selected language with the language participants actually use.
Set the meeting’s speaking and caption language
- Before speaking, identify the language used for most of the meeting.
- Open the meeting’s caption or speech-language control and choose that language rather than leaving an unrelated default selected.
- If several languages will be used, tell participants which language will be dominant so the majority-language rule is predictable.
- Run a short test with representative speakers when the meeting is high-stakes.
Zoom says selecting the correct caption language helps speech-to-text and language identification. A default summary-language setting alone cannot correct speech that was identified with the wrong caption language.
Check feature-specific language support
Language availability is feature-specific; a language supported by captions is not automatically supported by every AI Companion function. Consult Supported languages for Zoom AI features before promising a particular output language. If the language is not listed, a wrong-language result may reflect a support limitation rather than a user error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when Zoom transcript or caption settings changed?
Do not assume that a changed caption control means Meeting Summary is broken. Zoom’s May 2026 FAQ describes a gradual rollout of transcript and caption-setting changes from May 24 through May 26, 2026, and account configurations can show different options during or after that rollout.
Understand the saved-caption change
Zoom says saved captions would no longer be downloadable after the rollout. Customers who need retained speech-to-text data are directed to transcripts instead. If your workflow depended on downloading saved captions, review the transcript configuration and retention policy before the meeting, not after the caption file is needed.

How can an administrator troubleshoot a locked or missing control?
An administrator should work from the highest-level policy downward. A personal setting cannot override a group or account setting that is disabled or locked.
Use this administrator sequence
- Confirm the organization’s Zoom Workplace plan and the user’s licensed status.
- Check whether the feature is available for the organization’s region and industry.
- Inspect the account-level Meeting Summary setting and whether it is enabled.
- Inspect the relevant group setting, if the user belongs to a group with separate AI Companion policies.
- Inspect the user’s personal setting and unlock it when the user should control the option.
- Have the user sign out and back in, update the client, and test as host or co-host.
Zoom’s administrative instructions are in Enabling or disabling meeting summary with AI. If the setting remains absent after eligibility and policy checks, the account owner should use Zoom support rather than enabling unrelated recording or caption features as a workaround.
What is the fastest end-to-end test?
A short controlled test separates account problems from meeting-operation and delivery problems. Use a host, a co-host, and one signed-in invitee on supported clients.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Create a brief test meeting with the invitee on the original invitation.
- As host or co-host, start Meeting Summary before anyone speaks.
- Speak for a minute in the intended language and set the matching caption language.
- Keep everyone in the main meeting room; do not open a breakout room.
- Stop the summary, end the meeting, and check email, Zoom Hub, the meeting chat, and the portal’s Summaries area.
- If generation succeeds but email does not, focus on sharing, sign-in, and invite status. If no destination has a summary, return to activation, eligibility, and client-version checks.
This test does not prove that every future meeting will behave identically, but it identifies which control plane is failing without involving a long production meeting.
When should I escalate to the account owner or Zoom support?
Escalate after you have verified the plan, policy locks, host/co-host activation, main-room location, current client requirement, recipient sign-in, invite status, language support, and transcript configuration. Include the meeting date and time, host account, client type, the exact control that was missing or disabled, and which destinations you checked. Those details let an administrator distinguish an account-policy issue from a client or delivery issue without asking you to repeat the entire meeting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Zoom create a summary after a meeting if nobody started Meeting Summary?
Zoom’s documented workflow creates the summary from speech-to-text captured while Meeting Summary is active. If the feature was never enabled, Zoom does not document a retroactive generation path; ask the host or administrator whether any transcript was retained and contact Zoom support if the discussion is business-critical.
Does turning on cloud recording fix a missing AI Companion summary?
Recording and Meeting Summary are different controls. Zoom’s troubleshooting guidance ties the summary to its own activation and speech-to-text settings, so enabling recording alone is not a documented remedy for a summary that was never started.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a guest who was added during the call receive the summary automatically?
Not necessarily. Zoom’s automatic email route is tied to signed-in status and the original invitee list, so a guest added ad hoc may need the host to share the summary manually through the portal or another approved destination.
How do I preserve speech-to-text information for compliance?
Review the account’s current transcript settings and retention policy before the meeting. Zoom’s May 2026 rollout says saved captions are no longer downloadable after rollout and directs customers who need retained speech-to-text data to transcripts.
