To find out why AI responses are slow or timing out, first identify whether the model runs on your device or in the cloud. For a cloud service, compare provider-side timing with your Wi-Fi and internet connection; for a local model, the host device and software are also central. Then test one layer at a time—provider, Wi-Fi, DNS, route, and ISP—so a good speed test or a single failed ping does not send you after the wrong cause.

What does “slow AI inference” mean, and why does the distinction matter?

“Slow” can mean waiting a long time before anything appears, watching a response arrive slowly, or waiting for a request that eventually times out. Those symptoms can have different causes. A long pause before the first output is not the same measurement as slow generation after output begins, and neither automatically proves that the home internet is at fault.

First determine where inference happens:

  • Cloud inference: Your device sends a request to a provider. The wait can include provider processing as well as the network path between your home and the service.
  • Local inference: The model runs on your computer or another device in your home. Its generation speed depends heavily on that host device and the software running the model; internet troubleshooting alone may not explain it.

The diagnostic steps below are most useful for cloud services and APIs, where provider timing and network conditions can be compared. If the model is local, establish that first and investigate the host device and inference software rather than assuming the ISP is responsible.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture a clear before-and-after comparison. Without a consistent test, a faster response may simply reflect a shorter prompt, a different model, less household traffic, or a different service tier.

  • Record the date, time, and timezone, and whether the problem is continuous or comes and goes.
  • Describe what “slow” means: delayed first output, slow generation, or a timeout or other failure.
  • Note the device, AI client, model, service tier, and—if using an API—the endpoint and project when available.
  • Keep the prompt and requested output size consistent when repeating a request, if practical.
  • Record whether other apps or devices are also having trouble, and whether the AI service behaves differently near the router or over Ethernet.
  • Note the household network load, such as concurrent downloads or streams, and any change you made between tests.

Change one thing at a time. If you adjust Wi-Fi placement, switch DNS resolvers, restart equipment, and repeat a request all at once, you may improve the result without learning which change mattered.

How can I tell whether the provider or the home network is responsible?

For an API, compare the provider’s available service-health and usage information for the affected model, tier, project, and time window. For the network, compare the same request under different home-connection conditions. Neither a normal-looking provider status nor one successful speed test settles the question by itself.

Separate time to first token from total request time

OpenAI’s API latency guidance distinguishes time to first token (TTFT), total request time, and token velocity. TTFT describes the wait until output begins; token velocity describes how quickly output is generated; total request time includes the request’s overall duration. Which metric is affected helps narrow the investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenAI notes that total request time is strongly affected by output size and reasoning, while TTFT is affected by uncached input size and reasoning. A response that takes longer because it is larger or involves more reasoning is not, by itself, evidence of poor Wi-Fi. Compare like with like before treating a change in timing as a network fault.

Use percentiles, not just an average

When the provider exposes timing distributions, inspect percentiles such as P50, P75, and P95 for the affected model, tier, project, and time range. OpenAI’s Help Center advises: “Always review P50 / P75 / P95 percentiles. Averages can hide real-user impact.” Averages can make the service look steady even when a subset of requests is unusually slow, so look at the distribution that matches the affected requests.

Keep the comparison narrow. A project-wide or all-model average can mix requests with different models, tiers, prompts, and output sizes. If a client reports an error while the provider’s service information does not show a matching incident, the request may not have reached the provider. In that case, inspect the client or proxy’s timeout settings and note recent network changes rather than assuming the provider processed the request.

How do I check whether Wi-Fi is the problem?

Compare the affected device in its normal location with the same device closer to the router or access point. If practical, compare both with a direct Ethernet connection. These tests help isolate the wireless portion of the path; they do not prove that the ISP or AI provider is healthy.

Compare location and household load

  1. Repeat the same request from the device’s usual location and record its timing and outcome.
  2. Move the device closer to the router or access point, then repeat the same request without changing the prompt or model.
  3. Check whether the device is connected through a mesh point and whether its placement or nearby obstacles could be affecting the signal.
  4. Note the Wi-Fi band if you can see it, and whether the household is downloading large files, streaming, or otherwise using the connection heavily.
  5. Repeat the comparison when other devices are quiet, if that is practical. Record the time and household conditions instead of treating a single result as conclusive.

Google’s Wi-Fi guidance identifies obstacles, interference, band, mesh-point placement, and concurrent household traffic as factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance. If only one device or one location has trouble, investigate that device, access point, and local radio conditions before blaming the wider internet connection.

Use a gateway ping and Ethernet as isolation tests

On Windows, run ipconfig in Command Prompt and find the Default Gateway under the active network connection. Then ping that gateway address with ping <gateway address>. A response confirms that the device can reach the router over its current connection. It does not confirm that the modem, ISP, route to the AI service, or provider is working properly.

If you can borrow or reuse an Ethernet cable, connect the device directly to the router and repeat the same request. Microsoft Support describes an Ethernet comparison as a way to distinguish a Wi-Fi router problem from a modem or ISP problem. A wired test is a diagnostic, not a reason by itself to buy a cable or replace equipment; the evidence here does not establish that Cat6 is necessary.

If Ethernet works reliably while Wi-Fi does not, focus on the wireless path: location, obstacles, interference, access point or mesh placement, and household load. If both wired and wireless tests are poor across multiple devices, broaden the investigation to the WAN connection, ISP conditions, and provider behavior.

When should I test DNS, and how?

Check DNS when the symptom points to name resolution—for example, a slow initial connection or a name-resolution failure. DNS translates a service name into information the client needs to connect. A ping or traceroute to a destination does not measure how quickly that lookup happened.

Google Public DNS documentation states: “To measure DNS resolution speed you need to use a DNS testing tool.” Use a DNS-specific test to investigate lookup timing. Its troubleshooting guidance also describes UDP and TCP query checks for situations where DNS queries appear blocked or unanswered. A failed or delayed lookup can be a clue about name resolution; it is not interchangeable with a measurement of the full AI request.

Do not run a DNS test just because a response is slow after generation has already begun. In that situation, investigate provider timing and token velocity, and compare network conditions. Choose the diagnostic that matches the stage where the delay occurs.

How do I investigate a route problem or packet loss?

If symptoms point to reachability or a network path problem, traceroute or MTR can collect information about the route. For suspected packet loss or connection resets, Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies packet capture as a useful diagnostic. These tools are more informative when you compare multiple observations and the end-to-end behavior of the request.

A silent intermediate hop does not prove that the service is broken. A router along the path may filter or de-prioritize the diagnostic traffic while still forwarding normal traffic. Do not read an unanswered hop as end-to-end packet loss unless the destination behavior supports that conclusion. Latency, jitter, and packet loss can help describe a connection, but a route trace is not a direct measurement of the AI provider’s processing time.

Keep the route test tied to the actual symptom and time. A trace collected when the service is working normally may not explain a timeout that occurred hours earlier. If you share results with support, pair them with the request’s time range and timezone, affected endpoint and model, and request identifier if available.

What can a speed test tell me about slow AI responses?

A speed test is a snapshot of connection performance to a particular test server at a particular time. Results can vary with test-server location, congestion, time of day, and possible throttling. Upload speed also matters for some network activities. A good result does not rule out provider-side delay, transient packet loss, DNS trouble, or weak Wi-Fi at the device.

There is no established universal “required speed” or latency or packet-loss threshold that identifies a home network as the cause of slow AI inference across different providers, models, and local-versus-cloud setups. Avoid applying a generic internet threshold as if it were an AI-specific pass/fail rule.

How should I compare a fast request with a slow one?

Hold constant what you can, and write down what you cannot. A disciplined comparison helps separate changes in model or prompt from changes in the path between your home and the service.

Comparison factor What to keep the same or record Why it matters
Inference location Local device or cloud provider Local generation depends heavily on the host device and software; cloud requests also depend on provider processing and the network path.
Request and service Model, service tier, endpoint, project, prompt, and output size Different models, tiers, input sizes, and output sizes can change timing independently of home-network conditions.
Timing metric TTFT, total request time, token velocity, and any timeout or error These distinguish a delay before output from slow generation or a request that never completes.
Home connection Device, Wi-Fi location and band, Ethernet status, and access point or mesh point These help isolate a wireless or device-specific problem from a wider connection issue.
Conditions Time and timezone, household network load, DNS resolver, and test destination Traffic, time, resolver, and destination can change what a network measurement shows.

For cloud APIs, compare provider metrics and your own request records over the same time window. For Wi-Fi, compare near and far locations or wired and wireless runs under similar household conditions. If you change the test destination, resolver, model, or prompt, record that change rather than treating the results as a direct like-for-like comparison.

What should I do if every device is affected?

If multiple devices are slow and direct wired tests are also poor, the problem is less likely to be limited to one device’s Wi-Fi reception. Check whether the ISP reports an outage or ask the ISP about service conditions. Compare the timing with the AI provider’s service information as well; a WAN problem and provider delay are different possibilities, and either can coincide with the same symptom.

If only one device is affected, or trouble follows one Wi-Fi location, start with that device and local wireless path. Check access point or mesh placement, obstacles, interference, and concurrent network use. Google Nest guidance also recommends checking equipment and ISP status when diagnosing Wi-Fi problems. Do not upgrade a router, mesh system, modem, computer, or accelerator until a test identifies a limitation that the replacement would address.

What information should I give support?

For an API issue, OpenAI recommends including the impacted endpoints and models, time ranges with timezone, and request identifiers if available. Add the affected tier and project, the client’s exact error or timeout, and whether the request appears in the provider’s usage or timing information.

For a home-network issue, include the device and whether it was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, its location, whether other devices were affected, and the result of any gateway, DNS, route, or speed test. State when the test was taken and what changed between observations. This gives the ISP, provider, or network support team evidence tied to the failure rather than an unqualified report that “the AI is slow.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a universal ping number to tell whether my network is fast enough for AI?

No universal AI-specific latency threshold is established across providers, models, and local or cloud setups. A ping is a measurement to its particular destination and does not report provider processing time or DNS lookup speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does one missing traceroute hop mean my ISP is dropping traffic?

Not necessarily: intermediate routers may filter or de-prioritize traceroute replies while forwarding ordinary traffic. Look for a matching end-to-end problem across repeated observations before treating a silent hop as evidence of service-impacting loss.

Should I switch DNS resolvers whenever an AI service is slow?

Not on that symptom alone. DNS is worth testing when connection setup is slow or name resolution fails; use a DNS-specific timing or query test to see whether lookup behavior is implicated before changing resolver settings.
