If the Kimi API returns an error, first identify the HTTP status and the JSON error type; then verify that your API key, regional endpoint, and model name belong together. One important naming detail: Kimi’s official API troubleshooting guide identifies kimi-k3 as the direct API model name. It lists kimi-k3[1m] as a compatible alias for Claude Code—not as the standard name for direct API requests. These distinctions matter when troubleshooting “Kimi K3.1 Pro” errors because a product label or assumed model name may not be the identifier your integration needs.
The guidance below is based on undated Kimi Help Center pages, so model identifiers, endpoints, limits, and timeout behavior can change. For users outside mainland China, the troubleshooting guide gives https://api.moonshot.ai/v1 as the international Kimi API Open Platform base URL.
What should I check first when a Kimi API request fails?
Start with the response and the exact route the request took—not just the message shown by your IDE or application. Record the HTTP status, the JSON error’s error.type and error.message, the request ID if present, and the endpoint and model actually used. A short symptom such as “Kimi timed out” or “the model is unavailable” hides several distinct causes.
- Capture the failure details. Save the HTTP status, error type and message, request ID, model, endpoint, and occurrence time with timezone. Redact API keys, authorization headers, cookies, and other secrets from logs.
- Identify the product and account. Confirm the credential is for the Kimi API Open Platform. Kimi API, Kimi Code, and Kimi Membership are separate products; their keys, balances, and benefits are not interchangeable.
- Match the region and endpoint. The key must belong to the regional platform addressed by the request. Kimi’s guide says regional platform accounts and keys cannot be mixed. For users outside mainland China, it gives
https://api.moonshot.ai/v1for the international Open Platform. - Check model access. Use the same key as the failing application to call
GET /v1/models, then confirm the intended model is listed for that credential. - Check available balance and voucher coverage. A key can authenticate while the account still lacks usable balance, has an overdue account, or has a voucher that does not cover the target model.
- Verify the configuration in effect. Inspect environment variables, proxy settings, and local routing tools; stale or mixed settings can make the application use a different key or endpoint than expected.
For a reproducible test, write down the full base URL, the model string, whether streaming is enabled, the client or SDK version, and the number of attempts visible in logs. This makes a direct API result comparable with what an IDE or agent reports.

Why am I getting a 401, 404, permission error, or model_not_found?
These errors often point to a mismatch among the API product, credential, regional endpoint, or model identifier. Check those together before changing request parameters or assuming the service is unavailable.
Check the credential and regional platform
Make sure the key was created for the Kimi API Open Platform rather than Kimi Code or another Kimi product. Then confirm that the key and endpoint belong to the same regional platform. For users outside mainland China, the official troubleshooting guide names the international endpoint as https://api.moonshot.ai/v1; regional accounts and keys are independent. A key copied from one Kimi product or region may therefore look valid in your configuration while failing when sent to another platform.

For direct API calls, the guide specifies kimi-k3. It gives kimi-k3[1m] as a compatible alias for Claude Code. Do not assume that “Kimi K3.1 Pro,” a product label, or a name shown in a third-party interface is the direct API identifier. Use GET /v1/models with the application’s own key to check which models that credential can access. This test is more useful than checking a model list in a different account or in a web interface.
Check the SDK base URL and hidden routing
If you use the OpenAI SDK, set its Kimi base_url to the correct Kimi endpoint. Kimi’s guide warns that if the base URL is unset, a request may go to OpenAI and return an OpenAI model_not_found error. In that case, changing the Kimi model string will not solve the problem because the request never reached Kimi.
Also check proxy and router configuration. A local gateway may rewrite the host, path, authorization header, or model field. Compare the configured value with the destination visible in HTTP or proxy logs. Review shell variables, container secrets, IDE settings, and project-level configuration for an older key or base URL that overrides your current settings.
Confirm balance and voucher coverage
Check the account’s available balance and whether any voucher applies to the selected model. A model-access problem or quota failure can persist even when the key itself is valid. If a dashboard shows credit but the application reports no usable quota, first confirm that both are attached to the same regional platform, organization, and key.

Why do I still get a 429 after topping up?
A 429 is not one specific failure. Read error.type before adding funds, changing tiers, or retrying; Kimi’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes server overload, organization rate limits, and account quota problems. Topping up can address a balance problem, but it cannot make an overloaded service node accept more work.
| Error type | What it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
engine_overloaded_error |
Server capacity pressure. | Follow Retry-After, reduce concurrency, and retry with exponential backoff. Kimi says topping up or upgrading a tier does not fix this server-capacity condition. |
rate_limit_reached_error |
An organization-level concurrency, requests-per-minute (RPM), tokens-per-minute (TPM), or tokens-per-day (TPD) limit was reached. | Reduce request frequency or check the platform’s rate-limit and tier information. Lower parallelism as well as request frequency when concurrency is the limiting dimension. |
exceeded_current_quota_error |
A balance, overdue-account, or expired-voucher issue. | Check available_balance, account status, and voucher validity. |
If the reported limit does not match the account dashboard, verify that the application is using the intended account’s key. Mixed or unintended credentials can make the dashboard and the failing request appear to disagree. Check the organization and project associated with the key, not only the user account that is currently signed in to a browser.
Count attempts, not just application operations
An application may report one failed operation even though its SDK sent several requests. Kimi warns that clients such as the OpenAI SDK can retry automatically, and those attempts consume rate-limit quota. Check client logs and actual request counts before concluding that one operation caused only one API request. Record each attempt’s timestamp, status, error type, and request ID when available.
Automatic retries can also make a brief overload last longer: several workers may all retry at once and recreate the concurrency spike. Honor the server’s Retry-After value when supplied, add exponential backoff, and avoid an unbounded retry loop. The guide says requests interrupted by a 429 are not charged, but they still matter for rate-limit accounting when the client makes additional attempts.
How should I choose a retry strategy?
First classify the response. For engine_overloaded_error, wait according to Retry-After, reduce concurrency, and use increasing delays between attempts. For rate_limit_reached_error, reduce traffic and review RPM, TPM, TPD, and concurrency limits instead of repeatedly retrying at the same pace. For exceeded_current_quota_error, stop retrying until balance, account status, or voucher coverage is corrected.
Keep retries bounded and observable. Log the original operation ID separately from each wire-level attempt so that a later billing or usage investigation can distinguish one user action from several HTTP requests. If a request is safe to repeat, retry it only after the classified condition permits it; if your application cannot determine whether a prior attempt completed, reconcile the request ID and usage records before issuing another expensive operation.
Why does my Kimi API request time out or lose its connection?
A timeout can occur at the client, an intermediate proxy or gateway, or the API platform. Check each layer’s timeout rather than treating a local timeout as proof that the server failed to finish the request.

Check the client and proxy timeout settings
Review the timeout configured in your application and SDK, then check any proxy or gateway between the client and Kimi. Kimi’s troubleshooting guide says a long, non-streaming generation may not send response headers until generation is complete. An intermediate gateway may close the connection while it waits, even though the API is still generating a response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare the configured values at every layer: SDK request timeout, application job timeout, reverse-proxy idle timeout, load-balancer timeout, and any platform limit. A local limit shorter than the API’s limit is a common reason that one client fails while a direct test succeeds.
Use streaming for long generations
Kimi recommends stream=True to reduce connection failures associated with waiting for a non-streaming response. Streaming sends an SSE stream, lets the client see progress sooner, and gives the caller more control to interrupt a request. It does not remove the need to check client and proxy timeouts: an intermediary must allow the stream to remain open and pass events through rather than buffering until completion.
When testing streaming, inspect whether the client actually consumes SSE events continuously. A tool that requests streaming but waits for a complete buffered body can still hit an intermediary timeout. Compare a short prompt and a longer generation to determine whether the failure is related to response duration.
Distinguish platform timeout from shorter local limits
Kimi’s API overview says the platform generally uses a two-hour timeout and returns HTTP 504 when one request exceeds it. The overview was undated in the retrieved content. That platform-level setting does not rule out a shorter timeout in your SDK, application, proxy, or gateway. A client-side timeout may therefore occur without a Kimi 504 response.

If your client disconnects earlier, fix the local or intermediary setting first. Streaming can improve delivery for long generations, but it cannot make a request that exceeds the platform’s maximum complete successfully.
How can I tell whether the API failed or my IDE or agent did?
Make a direct API call using the same key, endpoint, and model as the failing IDE, agent, or other third-party tool. A direct call helps separate an API/account problem from a tool’s configuration or response-handling problem. Do not substitute a different account or model for this test, because that changes the condition you are trying to reproduce.

If the direct call fails
Resolve the key, regional endpoint, balance, model access, or request parameters first. Save the status, error type and message, and request ID if available so you can compare the direct call with the tool’s result. Confirm that the direct request uses the same streaming mode and, where relevant, the same proxy path.
If the direct call works
Focus on the third-party integration. Inspect its logs and configuration for protocol conversion, streaming-response handling, timeout settings, automatic retries, and stale credentials or endpoint values. An IDE may translate a model label into another identifier, while an agent may add retries or stop waiting before the server responds.
Recommended Free Tools
Kimi notes that third-party tools are not maintained by the Kimi Open Platform; if the direct API works but the integration continues to fail, contact that tool’s support. Include the tool version, the exact model and endpoint it selected, and a redacted comparison with the successful direct request.
Why did the client show no result when the API charged me?
A blank result in a client does not establish that the server-side request failed. A local timeout, proxy disconnect, or tool that stopped waiting can interrupt delivery after the API has processed a request. The opposite can also happen: a client may report a generic failure after several attempts even though no billable completed response exists. Reconcile records instead of inferring the outcome from the screen alone.
- Compare the HTTP status and
request_idwith the client’s error log. - Check the response’s
usagefield, if a response was received. Preserve the model and usage details with the request ID. - Look for retries or loops in the SDK and tool logs; the visible operation may have generated multiple attempts.
- Compare the request’s model, project, and time with platform usage records and billing details.
- Check whether the client timed out before receiving headers, disconnected during an SSE stream, or stopped a waiting operation locally.
- If the records still appear inconsistent, prepare the organization ID, project, occurrence time and timezone, request ID, model, client version, redacted logs, and billing details for platform support. Do not send secrets in troubleshooting logs.
Use a stable internal operation identifier in your own logs and associate every retry with it. That makes it possible to explain why the application shows one action while the platform records more than one request.
Which details help distinguish similar-looking API failures?
Compare the failure across five dimensions. This prevents an account quota issue, for example, from being treated as a server overload or a client-side disconnect.
| Compare | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Error and status | HTTP status plus error.type and error.message; distinguish overload, organization rate limit, quota, authentication, model access, and connection failures. |
| Credential and route | API product, regional account, key, base URL, model name, proxy, and local router configuration. |
| Request count | Wire-level attempts, including SDK retries, versus the single operation reported by the application. |
| Response delivery | Streaming mode and the timeout at each client, proxy, gateway, and platform layer. |
| Billing evidence | Request ID, response usage, dashboard entry, time, model, and project. |
A practical escalation checklist
Before contacting platform support, reproduce the issue with the smallest request that still fails and gather a complete, redacted record. Include the API product and regional platform, endpoint, model identifier, organization and project, HTTP status, exact error type and message, request ID, timestamp with timezone, client and SDK version, streaming setting, retry count, and relevant proxy or gateway behavior.

For apparent charges or missing results, add the response usage object when available, platform usage records, billing details, and the client timeout or disconnect log. Remove authorization headers, API keys, cookies, prompt data that is not needed for diagnosis, and any other sensitive material. This evidence lets support compare the server request with the account and billing records rather than relying on a screenshot of a generic client error.
Quick decision tree
- Is there an HTTP response? If yes, capture the status, error type, message, and request ID. If no, investigate DNS, network, proxy, and client timeout behavior.
- Is the status 429? Read the error type. Overload calls for backoff and lower concurrency; rate-limit errors call for lower traffic or tier-limit review; quota errors call for balance, account, or voucher checks.
- Is the status 401, 404, or model-related? Confirm the API Open Platform key, regional endpoint, Kimi SDK base URL,
GET /v1/modelsresult, balance, and thekimi-k3model identifier. - Did a client or proxy time out? Compare all timeout settings and test
stream=Truefor long generations. - Does a direct call work? If yes, focus on the IDE, agent, router, or proxy. If no, continue with account, routing, and request diagnosis.
- Is there a usage or billing discrepancy? Reconcile request ID, usage, retries, dashboard records, project, model, and timestamp before escalating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Kimi API 429 always mean I need to wait and retry?
No. The action depends on the returned error type: server overload, an organization rate limit, and current quota trouble have different causes. Check the JSON error details before choosing whether to back off, reduce traffic, or investigate the account.
Can I use a Kimi Membership subscription as API credit?
Kimi’s troubleshooting guidance treats Kimi Membership, Kimi Code, and the API Open Platform as separate products. It does not describe their keys, balances, or benefits as interchangeable.
What model name should a direct Kimi API request use?
The troubleshooting guide identifies kimi-k3 as the direct API model name. It lists kimi-k3[1m] as a compatible alias for Claude Code. Confirm the model is available to your key with GET /v1/models.
Why does the OpenAI SDK return model_not_found for a Kimi model?
Check the SDK’s base_url. If it is unset or points to OpenAI, the request may be sent to OpenAI, which can return an OpenAI model-not-found error. Also verify the Kimi key, regional endpoint, and model string.
Will topping up fix every Kimi 429?
No. A balance top-up addresses a quota problem only when the account actually lacks usable credit. engine_overloaded_error indicates server capacity pressure, while rate_limit_reached_error indicates an organization concurrency, RPM, TPM, or TPD limit.
Why does streaming help with timeouts?
A long non-streaming generation may wait to send headers until completion, allowing a gateway to close the connection. Streaming sends an SSE response and exposes progress sooner, although client, proxy, and platform timeouts still apply.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does a client timeout prove that Kimi did not complete the request?
No. A client or proxy can stop waiting after the server has processed the request. Compare the HTTP status, request ID, response usage, retries, platform usage records, billing details, and timeout logs.
What should I send Kimi support about a failed or apparently charged request?
Include the organization and project, time and timezone, request ID, model, client version, redacted logs, and billing details. Add the relevant status, error type, usage, and retry information. Remove API keys and other credentials before sharing logs.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose Kimi API failures by matching four things: the exact error type, the API product and regional key, the endpoint and model identifier, and the way your client delivers and retries responses. Use kimi-k3 for direct API calls, verify access with GET /v1/models, classify every 429 before changing account settings, and compare client, proxy, and platform timeouts. When a result or charge is unclear, trust correlated request IDs, usage, dashboard, and billing records rather than the client screen alone.
