Start with the automation’s trace. It shows whether Home Assistant received the trigger, which conditions were evaluated, and the exact action where a run stopped. If no trace exists for the expected moment, investigate the trigger, entity state, and automation availability. If a trace exists, follow it to the first failed condition or action.
This method separates four different failures that look alike: the automation never triggered, a condition stopped the run, an action failed or targeted nothing, or a previous run/restart prevented the work from completing. The sections below give a recovery path for each case.
What should I check first when an automation does not run?
Open the automation’s trace before changing YAML or rebuilding the automation. Home Assistant’s documentation describes the trace as the place where most problems appear: it records the trigger that started a run, every condition evaluated, and each action step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the automation in the Home Assistant interface.
- Open its trace and select the run closest to the time you expected it to fire.
- If a trace exists, follow the graph from the trigger to the first stop, failed condition, warning, or error.
- If no trace exists for that moment, stay on the trigger side of the investigation: enabled status, entity state, transition, unavailable handling, and trigger configuration.
A trace that ends with “Stopped because a condition failed” is a different problem from one that says “Stopped on error.” The first means the sequence was deliberately blocked by logic; the second means an action could not complete.

How can I tell whether the trigger fired at all?
The presence or absence of a trace is the quickest dividing line. No trace means Home Assistant did not start a run at the expected time, while a trace proves that the trigger path succeeded and lets you inspect what happened next.
Is the automation enabled?
A disabled automation does not react to triggers. Its actions can still be launched manually from the editor, which can make a disabled automation appear healthy during a quick test. Check the automation’s enabled control before changing any trigger or condition.
Did the entity make the required transition?
Triggers react to a change at a specific moment, not continuously while a state remains true. A state trigger that is waiting for an entity to change to on will not fire merely because the entity has stayed on for an hour.

The label shown in a card may say “Open,” while the actual state used by the trigger is on. Compare the exact raw value, not the friendly text, with the trigger configuration.
Did a numeric threshold actually get crossed?
A numeric-state trigger waits for a threshold crossing. If a value is already above the upper limit when the automation is loaded, it does not repeatedly fire simply because the value remains above that limit. The value must move through the configured boundary in the direction the trigger requires.
When diagnosing a threshold, record the value immediately before and after the event. A reading that moves from below the threshold to above it is different from one that starts above it and changes only slightly.
Did the entity come from an unavailable state?
A restrictive From state can silently exclude recovery events. For example, a trigger requiring From: off will not match a transition from unavailable to on. If the automation should run regardless of the previous state, remove the From requirement and let the destination state determine whether the event qualifies.
This matters after a network interruption, integration reload, or device restart, when an entity may first become unavailable and later return directly to its usable state.

Why does a trigger work but the automation still do nothing?
When a trace exists, inspect conditions before actions. Home Assistant evaluates conditions immediately after the trigger; if any condition fails, later actions are not run.
Read the condition result in the trace
The trace marks a blocked run with “Stopped because a condition failed.” Open the condition step and inspect the values Home Assistant saw at that instant. A condition becoming true a few seconds later does not resume that run and does not cause its later actions to execute.
Add a trigger for the event that changes the condition
Suppose an automation is triggered by a door opening, but it requires the house to be in a particular mode. If that mode changes after the door event, the original run remains stopped. To support the later change, add a separate trigger for the mode transition or redesign the logic so the event that matters is the trigger.

What does “Stopped on error” mean, and why did the action have no visible effect?
“Stopped on error” means the action failed. Open that action in the trace to see the error text and the values supplied to it; do not infer success from the fact that the trigger and conditions passed.
Check the target that the action resolved
Actions that target an area, floor, device, or label depend on that target containing matching entities. If the target resolves to an empty set, the action can complete without changing anything you can see. Verify that the intended entities are still assigned to the selected area, floor, device, or label.
Check entity availability
An entity can remain listed in the target while being unavailable. Review the trace values and then open Settings > System > Logs for warnings about referenced entities that are missing or unavailable. A warning about a missing entity usually means the action must be pointed at a replacement entity or the target grouping must be corrected.
Separate execution from the device result
A completed action proves only that Home Assistant executed the action step. It does not prove that a physical device accepted the command, had power, or was reachable. Use the trace to confirm execution, then use the entity state and system logs to determine why the device result differs.

How do run modes suppress or cancel automations?
Run mode determines what happens when a new trigger arrives while an earlier run is still active. A correct trigger can therefore appear to fail because another run owns the automation.
| Situation | What you may see | What the mode does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| A previous run is active and the mode is Single | “Already running” or a maximum-run message in logs | The new start is ignored while the existing run continues | Use when overlapping executions would be unsafe or redundant |
| A new trigger arrives and the mode is Restart | The earlier run ends when the new one starts | The previous delay or wait is cancelled and the sequence starts over | Use when the newest event should replace older work |
| Several events must be retained | Runs are delayed or handled concurrently, depending on the selected mode | Queued or parallel behavior allows more than one trigger to be handled | Use only when the actions are safe to overlap or wait in line |
Choose the mode from the intended concurrency, not from the trigger alone. A motion-light automation may reasonably ignore a second event during a short action, while a notification workflow may need to retain every event.
What happens to delays, waits, and “For” timers during a restart?
Home Assistant stops active automations during a restart. Any in-progress delay, wait, or For duration is lost, so an automation that was halfway through a long timer will not resume at the same point after startup.

Use a future trigger for work that must survive
For a long pause, schedule or trigger the future event rather than keeping an automation run asleep for the entire interval. When the remaining work must be reconstructed after a restart, add a Home Assistant start trigger and a condition that determines whether the work is still due.
The reconstruction condition needs a durable fact to inspect, such as the state or timestamp that represents the unfinished work. Without such a fact, Home Assistant has no run context to restore after the previous process ended.
Why do my wait and “For” steps behave unexpectedly?
Each wait type has a different starting rule, and timeouts have a defined continuation behavior. Check the specific semantics before treating a wait as broken.
For durations restart when the state changes
A For timer counts only while the entity remains in the required state. If the entity leaves that state, even briefly, the timer restarts when the required state is reached again. A trace showing repeated starts is therefore expected when the source entity is unstable.

Wait for trigger listens only after it starts
Wait for trigger reacts to a change that occurs after the wait action begins. An event that happened before the wait was reached is not replayed. If the event may already have happened, test the current state separately or restructure the automation so the event itself is the trigger.

Wait for template can finish immediately
If the template is already true when Wait for template starts, it continues immediately rather than waiting for another change. This often explains a wait that appears to be skipped.
Understand timeout continuation
Wait actions continue after a timeout by default. If the workflow must stop when the timeout expires, disable Continue on timeout or check wait.completed before executing the next action. Otherwise, the following steps will run even though the awaited event never arrived.
Why did an automation stop working after an update or device replacement?
Check Home Assistant’s repair notices and configuration errors before rewriting the automation. Open Settings > System > Repairs and look for messages such as “failed to set up,” “Automation is unavailable,” or an unknown-action error.
Repair references to replaced devices
Replacing a device can invalidate the internal device IDs used by an automation. Reselect the replacement device in the automation editor so Home Assistant stores the current identifier instead of the old one.
Correct mixed YAML key styles
Configuration errors can result from mixing old and new key names, such as trigger with triggers, condition with conditions, or service with action. Use one syntax style consistently for the version and editor format you are running, then reload or validate the configuration and check Repairs again.
An automation marked unavailable is not equivalent to an automation that triggered and failed. The former needs configuration repair before trigger testing can provide useful evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does “Run actions” work when the real trigger does not?
Run actions is a partial test, not an end-to-end test. It skips the triggers and top-level conditions, so successful manual execution proves only that the selected action sequence can run under the manual context.
Manual runs do not contain trigger data
Manual runs have no trigger data. Templates that reference fields under trigger can therefore fail or behave differently when launched from the editor, even though they work during a real event.

Test with a real or simulated trigger context
For trigger-dependent templates, cause the actual entity transition under controlled conditions or use a simulated trigger context that supplies the fields the template expects. Then inspect the resulting trace rather than relying on the action button.
A useful test sequence is to run actions once to isolate the action itself, then perform the real transition to test the trigger, conditions, and trigger data together.
Which fix should I choose when several explanations fit?
Choose the fix based on the failure boundary shown by the trace and the behavior you actually want. The same symptom—nothing happened—can require opposite changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Evidence | Likely boundary | Decision to make | Typical adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| No trace at the expected time | Trigger or automation availability | Is the behavior event-based or state-based? | Verify enabled status, raw state, transition, threshold crossing, and unavailable handling |
| Trace stops at a condition | Condition logic | Should a later state change start a new run? | Add the relevant trigger or change the condition timing |
| Trace stops on an action error | Action execution | Does the target still contain valid entities? | Repair target assignments, replace unavailable entities, and read the log warning |
| Trace exists but a new event is ignored | Run mode | Should overlapping runs be ignored, queued, restarted, or parallel? | Select the mode that matches the required concurrency |
| Work disappears after reboot | Restart recovery | Must the unfinished work survive a restart? | Use a future or startup trigger plus a condition that reconstructs remaining work |
| Manual actions succeed but a real event fails | Trigger context | Does the template require trigger fields? | Test with a real or simulated trigger context |
What is a practical recovery checklist?
Use this order so each test eliminates a class of causes without changing several variables at once.
- Open the trace and identify whether a run exists for the expected event.
- Confirm the automation is enabled.
- Inspect the raw entity state in Settings > Tools > States.
- Verify that the required transition or numeric threshold crossing actually occurred.
- Remove or revise an overly restrictive
Fromstate if the entity can recover fromunavailable. - If the trace stops at a condition, compare its values with the moment of the trigger and add a trigger for any later change that should start work.
- If an action errors, inspect its trace values, target membership, entity availability, and Settings > System > Logs.
- Check run mode when logs mention an active run, ignored start, or maximum-run message.
- For long delays and waits, decide whether a restart must preserve the work and redesign around a future or startup trigger if necessary.
- After an update or replacement, review Settings > System > Repairs, reselect replaced devices, and correct mixed YAML keys.
- Use “Run actions” only for action isolation; finish with a real or simulated trigger-context test.
Home Assistant summarizes the principle plainly: “A trigger reacts at a specific moment, not while something is true.” Treat every automation as a sequence of moment-specific decisions—trigger, condition, action, run mode, and lifecycle—and the trace will show which decision prevented the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an automation recover a countdown that was interrupted by a power outage?
Not from the interrupted run itself: Home Assistant stops active automations during a restart and discards their in-progress waits. Store or derive a durable due-time or state, then use a startup trigger and a condition to decide whether the unfinished work should be performed.
Why does changing an entity in the UI not match the value my trigger expects?
Cards often display a human-readable label while triggers compare the raw state string. Inspect the entity in Settings > Tools > States and configure the trigger against that raw value, such as on, rather than the displayed word “Open.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How can I prove that a missing device, rather than a bad condition, caused the failure?
Open the trace and look for an action error or an empty target, then check Settings > System > Logs for warnings about missing or unavailable referenced entities. A condition failure is recorded separately as “Stopped because a condition failed.”
What should I do if a wait appears to be skipped every time?
Check whether the condition used by Wait for template is already true when the action starts; in that case it continues immediately by design. For Wait for trigger, verify that the event occurs after the wait begins, because earlier events are not replayed.
