If an exoskeleton rubs, creates a pressure point, hurts, or limits your movement, pause before continuing. Check the fit and the manual for your exact model, make only adjustments it permits, then test the movements your task requires in a safe area. Stop using the device if pain persists, it appears damaged, or you cannot correct restricted movement.

Exoskeletons differ in what they support and how they fit, so an adjustment that works for one model may not be right for another. The steps below are general troubleshooting; the Auxivo OmniSuit guidance is identified as a model-specific example, not a universal fitting recipe.

What should I check first if my exoskeleton hurts?

  1. Pause and locate the problem. Note where rubbing or pressure occurs, when it begins, and which movement triggers it.
  2. Check for a shift or fit problem. Look for straps pulling, loose or overly tight fasteners, cuffs pressing, components that have moved, or a support mode that is active when it is not needed. These are checks, not a diagnosis.
  3. Use the manual for your exact model. Inspect the straps, buckles, cuffs, harness contact areas, and support modules. Do not assume another brand’s adjustment direction or amount applies to your device.
  4. Adjust only as instructed. Use only approved fit adjustments or padding. Do not add improvised cushions or substitute parts unless the manual or manufacturer confirms they are compatible.
  5. Re-test before returning to the task. In a safe area, walk, bend, and reach as needed for your work. The device should stay in place without obstructing the required range of motion. If it shifts or restricts movement, readjust before resuming.

The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (Texas DWC), advises users to fit the device to the wearer, secure straps, check comfort, and verify movement. Its exoskeleton injury-prevention guidance says to check range of motion, and its Exoskeletons Safety Fact Sheet (HS25-016A, 10-25) says to readjust before work if the device restricts movement or shifts out of place.

How do I correct pressure points or rubbing?

Start with the contact point rather than tightening everything. A strap or cuff that is too loose can let equipment shift and rub; one that is too tight can create pressure. Check whether the device has moved and whether your manual specifies how that body area should fit. Texas DWC recommends checking fit, tension, flexibility, and slippage, but the correct adjustment depends on the model.

If you use an Auxivo OmniSuit, its manual provides the following device-specific checks:

  • Vest: It should fit close to the body while allowing free movement and breathing. If uncomfortable, the manual says to loosen the chest belts slightly.
  • Arm cuffs and shoulders: Check that the cuffs are positioned correctly and not too tight. If you cannot raise both arms forward, check whether the arm cuffs are locked, and use the manual’s procedure to check shoulder-joint position and stability. Reposition cuffs that slide.
  • Thigh cuffs: They should be snug but comfortable. The manual’s fit check is whether a flat hand can fit between the thigh and cuff without much effort.
  • Pressure or friction points: Readjust the vest, thigh cuffs, or arm cuffs as directed. The manual notes that fit may need correction as the suit settles during its first hour of use or when work posture changes.

These instructions apply to the OmniSuit only. For other models, follow their own manuals rather than copying the cuff, vest, or strap adjustments.

What if the exoskeleton restricts movement?

Check whether a strap, cuff, joint position, or support module is limiting the movement. Retest the movements required for the task—such as walking, bending, reaching, or raising your arms—in a safe place. If the device shifts or still blocks normal task movement, do not resume work until the fit is corrected according to the manual.

Some devices provide support only for certain postures or activities. For the OmniSuit specifically, Auxivo instructs users to deactivate back support when it is not required, including while sitting, driving, or taking a break, to prevent movement limitations. Do not apply that instruction to other devices unless their manufacturer says to.

When should I stop using it and get help?

  • Pain continues or is severe: Take a break and avoid further use until discomfort subsides. Hypershell’s support guidance on pain or discomfort recommends consulting a healthcare professional before resuming if pain is persistent or severe.
  • You cannot get a safe fit: Contact the manufacturer or authorized supplier if you cannot correct the fit using the manual or discomfort continues.
  • The equipment may be damaged: Inspect it before use and regularly. Texas DWC identifies cracked or worn parts, loose straps or fasteners, and battery or sensor malfunctions as concerns. Remove damaged equipment from service and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Movement remains restricted: Do not work in a device that still interferes with the required movement after an allowed adjustment.

This is general troubleshooting, not an individualized fit assessment or medical diagnosis. Follow the instructions for the exact model and intended task. Manual selection can matter by model and geography; for example, Laevo’s V2 manuals page distinguishes model versions and region-specific information.

How can I reduce discomfort during longer use?

Use breaks when needed, and keep checking whether the fit remains comfortable as your posture or task changes. Texas DWC notes that added weight and heat retention can contribute to heat strain; monitor for fatigue and signs of heat-related illness. The OmniSuit manual specifically says to stop using that suit if signs of overheating—such as heavy sweating, dizziness, or fatigue—occur.

Use only replacement parts approved for your model. For the OmniSuit, the manual requires original Auxivo Elastic Energy Storages (EES); it identifies the back EES as a consumable to replace after one year in use or if worn or damaged. That requirement is specific to this product, not exoskeletons generally.
