Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First determine whether the problem is that a plugin is unavailable, a particular component is failing to run, or the component runs but produces poor design work. Those are different issues: a successful install does not prove every bundled feature works, and weak output alone does not mean the plugin failed to load.
Identify where the plugin should work
Claude plugins can be used across Claude surfaces and in Claude Code, but component support differs. The Claude Help Center says plugins can be added in Claude on the web, the Chat tab in Claude Desktop, and Cowork. Additions are saved to the account and are also available in Claude Code in the terminal when you sign in with the same account. The Help Center describes availability for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans; check its current guidance because plan availability can change. See the current plugin support details.
Hooks and sub-agents run in Cowork and Claude Code, not chat. If one of these components is missing in a chat conversation, that may be expected rather than evidence of a broken installation.
Before changing anything, note the Claude surface, account used to sign in, plugin name and source, component that is failing, and exact error text. This helps separate an account or surface mismatch from a component or runtime issue.

Check the Claude Code installation
If the issue is with Claude Code itself, run claude doctor. Anthropic recommends it to check the installation type and version. For permission errors, follow Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guidance; it warns against sudo npm install -g, which can create permission problems and security risks.
Reproduce the failure with diagnostics
In Claude Code, start a session with claude --verbose. Anthropic’s CLI reference describes verbose mode as showing full turn-by-turn output and useful for debugging. Watch whether the component is absent, starts and exits, or runs but returns content that Claude cannot use. Preserve the exact error and note the point at which the behavior differs from what you expect.

Compare the same task with the plugin enabled and disabled, changing only that one condition. Anthropic’s plugin announcement describes toggling plugins, but it dates from the public-beta period; use the current product interface and documentation for exact command behavior. If the result changes, investigate the plugin’s component. If it does not, the cause may instead be the prompt, project context, model response, or another integration.
Find the failing plugin component
A plugin is a package, not necessarily one indivisible feature. Anthropic’s plugin API documentation describes these component roles:

The plugin manifest is .claude-plugin/plugin.json. Identify the implicated component before changing the package as a whole.
Plugin is absent or unavailable
Check that you are using a supported surface and the account where the plugin was added. Then confirm that it is actually added and enabled in the current interface. A plugin appearing in one account or Claude surface does not establish that it is available in another.

Skill or command is visible but not selected or useful
Check whether the task matches the skill’s description or command’s intended use. Instructions should make expected inputs, constraints, and deliverables clear. If verbose output does not show an execution error, treat this first as an instruction-selection or prompt-design problem, not a loading failure.
Hook or agent appears to be missing
Confirm that the surface supports the component. Hooks and sub-agents run in Cowork and Claude Code, not chat. For a hook that should run, also identify the session event that is supposed to trigger it.

MCP-backed operation fails
Check the external integration and its prerequisites separately from the plugin’s instructions. For a Claude Code workflow connected to Figma, Anthropic’s MCP example requires the latest Figma Desktop with Dev Mode MCP Server. A missing or unhealthy connection is distinct from a skill or command that runs but gives poor design direction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Improve design output after confirming execution
If the component runs but the design is generic, incomplete, or off-brief, improve the request before reinstalling. Anthropic’s prompting guidance recommends examples to steer output format, tone, and structure; its frontend design material encourages distinctive direction instead of generic defaults.
Make the request concrete. Specify:
- Audience and use case: Who will use the design and what they need to do.
- Deliverable: For example, a page, component, or design proposal.
- Visual direction: The intended style, hierarchy, and mood.
- Required content: Essential text, controls, and information.
- Constraints: Brand colors, framework, responsive behavior, or other requirements.
- What to avoid: Generic patterns or elements that do not fit the brief.
- Examples: References that show the desired format or direction.
Define a few checks that make the result assessable, such as responsive layout, readable contrast, clear hierarchy, and complete required content. These are practical ways to apply prompting guidance; they do not guarantee any specific plugin will produce a particular quality of design.
For a Figma workflow, establish that the Figma Desktop and Dev Mode MCP prerequisite is working first. If the connection is healthy but the design still misses the brief, focus on the skill or command instructions and the examples supplied, rather than treating output quality as an MCP connection failure.
Choose the next check based on the symptom
- Not visible where expected: Check plan and account context, surface availability, and whether that component is supported there.
- Claude Code installation or permission problem: Run
claude doctorand follow Anthropic’s setup guidance. - Failure point is unclear: Reproduce with
claude --verboseand keep the error text. - Only one component fails: Inspect that component and its dependencies, such as an MCP server, rather than troubleshooting only by plugin name.
- Component runs but design is weak: Make the brief more specific and add examples; verify external design-tool prerequisites separately.
Anthropic’s public documentation does not establish a complete current plugin-specific validation or cache/reload troubleshooting matrix. For version-sensitive commands, use the live Claude Code documentation for the version installed rather than relying on third-party mirror instructions.
