To troubleshoot Bluetooth audio problems, work from the outside in. First compare a downloaded track with streamed audio, then test close to the source with few obstacles or nearby wireless devices. If local audio is clean, focus on streaming, distance, or interference. If it is not, check the selected output, volume, app settings, multipoint connections, and—on Windows—the audio format and Bluetooth driver. Update and re-pair the headphones before considering repair.

What kind of Bluetooth audio problem are you hearing?

Start by naming the symptom and noting exactly when it happens. “Bad sound” can mean continuous distortion, crackling, buzzing, popping, skipping, low volume, silence, audio in one channel only, muffled speech, or a connection that repeatedly drops. The pattern helps distinguish an app or source problem from a radio-path, settings, pairing, or headphone fault.

  • Continuous distortion or low quality: compare different audio and apps, then check output and sound-processing settings.
  • Crackles, pops, or buzzing: test close to the source and away from likely interference before changing advanced settings.
  • Skips or cutouts: compare a local track with a stream, then reduce distance, obstacles, and connection complexity.
  • Silence or one-channel audio: verify the active output, volume, balance, and source connection, then test the headphones with another device.
  • Repeated disconnection: check the radio path and pairing state, and temporarily disconnect other paired devices.
  • Problem only during calls: check whether the computer has switched from the stereo music profile to a hands-free profile; compare ordinary music playback before changing hardware.

Record whether the issue affects one app, one source device, or every source you try. Also note whether it is continuous or intermittent, whether moving the source changes it, and whether both earcups are affected. That scope is often more useful than changing several settings at once.

How can I tell whether streaming or Bluetooth is the problem?

Play a downloaded track on the same headphones, then play streamed audio, keeping the source in the same place for both tests. Use a file stored on the phone or computer rather than a track that still needs an internet connection. If the local track is clear but the stream cuts out or sounds poor, investigate the stream, app, or network before treating it as a headphone fault.

Apple Support, in guidance published January 23, 2025, notes that headphones may lose their connection with streaming audio more often than with content stored on the device. Streamed playback depends on the internet connection, the app, the device’s workload, and the Bluetooth link; a local file removes one of those variables. A clean local track is a useful control, though it does not by itself identify whether the stream, app, or network is responsible.

If both local and streamed playback fail, repeat the test with another app or source if available. Consistent problems across sources point away from a single app. A problem limited to one app makes its settings, downloaded cache, stream quality, or audio source the more relevant place to investigate. If every source has the same distortion, continue with radio, settings, firmware, and hardware checks.

Can distance or wireless interference cause crackling and dropouts?

Yes. The Bluetooth radio path can become less reliable when the source is far away, blocked by walls or floors, or operating amid other wireless activity. Test with the source nearby and with a clear path before changing advanced settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the phone or computer within a couple of metres of the headphones and repeat the same track.
  2. Move away from walls, floors, metal furniture, and crowded wireless areas where practical. Keep the source on the same side of your body as the receiving earcup during the test.
  3. Test away from nearby 2.4 GHz devices, including Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, wireless speaker adapters, motion sensors, fluorescent lighting, microwave ovens, and wireless mice or keyboards. Bose lists these as possible interferers.
  4. Compare the result in another room or outdoors. Sony says crowded places can interrupt Bluetooth communication.
  5. Do not judge range while the source is in a bag, behind a computer case, or under a desk; those positions can add physical obstruction to the radio path.

If the sound improves when the source is close or the environment changes, the radio path is implicated. A codec or sound-quality setting cannot be assumed to solve interference; first establish whether the problem changes with distance or surroundings. If moving one metre closer makes the skips disappear, that is evidence about the environment even if the headphones work normally at home.

Which source and headphone settings should I check?

Confirm that the headphones are the active audio output, that both the source and headphones have adequate volume, and that the issue persists in another app. Temporarily turn off audio processing so it does not complicate the diagnosis.

  • Select the headphones as the active output device; a phone or computer may still be sending sound to its speakers, a monitor, or another Bluetooth device.
  • Raise the source volume and check the headphone’s own volume control, if it has one. Check the operating system’s balance control so one channel has not been reduced.
  • Try another app and close apps that may be competing for audio or maintaining another connection.
  • Turn off bass boost, loudness, reverb, compression, equalizer presets, spatial effects, and other enhancements temporarily. Return to a neutral setting for the test.
  • Charge the headphones and, if possible, test with only one source device connected. A very low battery can cause erratic behavior on some models even when they have not shut down.
  • Check whether a physical cable, USB audio device, or gaming console is selected instead of the Bluetooth profile you intended to test.

If neutral settings and another app clear up the problem, restore enhancements one at a time to identify the setting or app associated with it. If only one app is affected, focus on that app or its audio source rather than resetting the headphones immediately. If one ear is silent everywhere, inspect the earcup’s balance, charging contacts, and model-specific mono or stereo controls before assuming a radio fault.

Could multipoint or a sound-quality mode be causing skips?

It can be useful to simplify the connection before deciding that the headphones are faulty. Temporarily disable multipoint, or disconnect a second phone or tablet, and test with just one source. A second device can send connection events, switch the active audio stream, or compete for the headphones’ limited radio time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported Sony headphones, the Bluetooth Connection Quality option can be set to Priority on Stable Connection when troubleshooting skips. Sony also documents Priority on Sound Quality as an alternative when using LDAC. These are tradeoffs, not universal fixes: the available choices depend on the headphones and codec support, and a high-quality codec setting cannot guarantee a stable radio link in a crowded or obstructed environment.

Use stable-connection mode as a diagnostic comparison, not as a promise of better sound. If skips stop in that mode, the original quality mode may have been too demanding for the current radio conditions. If skips continue in both modes, return to distance, interference, source settings, drivers, and firmware. Do not assume that forcing LDAC or another high-bandwidth codec will overcome a failing adapter or a weak signal.

What should I check on a Windows PC?

On Windows, check the selected output and audio format, confirm that the PC supports the Bluetooth audio profile needed for stereo playback, and make sure the Bluetooth adapter driver is current. Microsoft recommends 2 channels, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz (DVD Quality) when that format is available, and advises verifying A2DP support.

  1. Open Windows sound settings and make sure the Bluetooth headphones are selected as the output.
  2. Open the output device’s format settings and, if available, choose 2 channels, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz (DVD Quality). The exact labels can vary by Windows version and device.
  3. Verify that the Bluetooth adapter supports A2DP, the stereo music profile. If only a hands-free or telephone profile appears, stereo quality and available controls may be limited.
  4. Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter, then install the latest Bluetooth adapter driver available through Windows or the PC manufacturer.
  5. Restart the PC and headphones. If the connection is still unreliable, remove the headphones from Windows and add them again.
  6. If the PC uses an external Bluetooth adapter, test whether its position—particularly near USB 3.0 equipment—affects the connection. Move it away from busy ports, hubs, and the computer’s metal chassis for comparison.
  7. Check that Windows has not selected a duplicate entry for the same headphones, such as a communications device instead of the stereo output.

Microsoft says an outdated or incompatible driver is one of the most common causes of Bluetooth connection problems. If the same headphones work normally with other sources but fail only on one PC, investigate that computer’s adapter, driver, A2DP capability, USB placement, and operating-system settings first. A driver update is more appropriate than buying new headphones when the fault is limited to one computer.

What about phones, tablets, and Mac computers?

On iPhone, iPad, Android, and macOS, begin with the same controls: select the headphones as output, raise volume on both devices, test a downloaded file, and try another app. Turn off EQ, loudness, spatial, or other audio processing while testing. Then toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the source, and check for operating-system and headphone-app updates.

Forget or remove the headphones from the source’s Bluetooth list only after recording any pairing or multipoint settings you need to restore. Re-pair with the headphones close to the device and with other Bluetooth accessories temporarily disconnected. If a phone works but a tablet or Mac does not, that comparison points toward the second source’s radio, software, or profile support rather than a universal headphone defect.

How should I update, re-pair, or reset the headphones?

After checking the source, radio path, and settings, update the headphone firmware and then rebuild the pairing if the problem continues. Sony’s guidance for persistent crackling, buzzing, popping, or vibration noises is: “Reset the headphones. Initialize the headphones. Pair the headphones with your device.”

  1. Use the headphone manufacturer’s app or support instructions to check for and install available firmware updates. Keep the headphones charged during the update.
  2. Forget or remove the headphones in the source device’s Bluetooth settings. Remove duplicate entries if the same model appears more than once.
  3. Restart the source device.
  4. Reset the headphones using the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. If the problem persists, initialize them if that option is provided. Initialization commonly erases pairing history and personal settings.
  5. Pair the headphones again and test a local track before restoring multipoint, EQ presets, or other enhancements.
  6. Repeat the close-range test with a second source. This shows whether the fresh pairing solved a source-state problem or whether the fault follows the headphones.

Reset and initialization procedures vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact headphones rather than assuming a button combination. Re-pairing after a restart gives the source and headphones a fresh connection to test. Do not repeatedly reset without changing one test condition; otherwise you cannot tell which step helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I read the result of the tests?

Use the outcome to narrow the fault rather than treating every symptom as the same problem.

  • Only streaming fails: check the app, network, stream quality, and background downloads. Apple Support specifically distinguishes streamed audio from stored content.
  • Only one room or crowded location fails: reduce distance and interference; the headphones may be functioning normally.
  • Only one app fails: reset that app’s audio settings or try another stream before changing Bluetooth settings.
  • Only one computer fails: prioritize its adapter, driver, A2DP support, USB 3.0 proximity, output format, and pairing record.
  • Every source fails after reset: the headphones, their firmware, battery, or physical radio hardware becomes the leading suspect.
  • One channel fails everywhere: check balance and charging contacts, then seek model-specific service if the issue remains.

When should I contact support or replace an adapter?

Escalate based on where the fault follows. If the problem occurs with the headphones across multiple sources after firmware updates, reset, and re-pairing, contact the manufacturer about support, warranty service, repair, or replacement. Give support the symptom, source models, whether local audio failed, the distance test result, firmware version, and the steps already completed.

If it occurs only on one computer, continue with that computer’s Bluetooth adapter, driver, USB 3.0 proximity, and operating-system settings. A USB Bluetooth adapter is a reasonable option only when a PC lacks a working built-in Bluetooth radio or its built-in radio is demonstrably defective. It is not a general cure for interference, an incompatible driver, or a fault in the headphones themselves. A replacement adapter also cannot address a problem that follows the headphones to other source devices.

Do not buy an adapter merely because a codec sounds disappointing or because a microwave, router, wall, or crowded venue causes cutouts. First prove that the computer’s radio is the limiting component. If a known-good adapter and current driver still fail with the same headphones while a phone works, inspect Windows profiles and settings before replacing the headphones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a USB Bluetooth adapter fix poor headphone sound on a PC?

It may help if the PC has no working built-in Bluetooth radio or its built-in radio is defective. It is not a fix for a faulty headphone, crowded radio conditions, or an incompatible driver; first confirm that the problem is specific to the PC’s Bluetooth connection.

Will switching to a higher-quality Bluetooth codec stop dropouts?

Not necessarily. Codec and connection-quality options depend on headphone and source support, while dropouts can also result from distance, obstacles, or nearby wireless activity. A codec change should not be treated as a substitute for checking the radio path.

What if my Bluetooth headphones work with my phone but not my computer?

That pattern makes the computer’s adapter, driver, A2DP support, USB placement, and audio settings the priority, rather than a headphone-wide fault. Check Windows output format, update the adapter driver, restart, remove and re-add the headphones, and retest.

Why does a downloaded song work while Spotify or another stream skips?

Stored audio removes the internet stream and much of the app’s network dependence. Check the streaming app, network congestion, background downloads, and distance to the source. Apple Support says wireless headphones may lose connection with streaming audio more often than with stored content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Wi-Fi interfere with Bluetooth headphones?

Yes. Bluetooth shares the crowded 2.4 GHz environment with Wi-Fi and devices such as cordless phones, wireless speakers, microwaves, motion sensors, and wireless mice or keyboards. Move the source, reduce obstacles, and compare another location.

Should I leave multipoint enabled?

Disable it temporarily while diagnosing skips or unexpected pauses. If single-device testing is clean, reconnect the second device and restore multipoint to see whether the extra connection is responsible.

What is the difference between resetting and initializing headphones?

Both are model-specific. A reset restarts or clears a device state; initialization is usually a deeper return to defaults that can erase pairing history and settings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then forget and pair the headphones again.

Why do my headphones sound muffled only during calls?

A computer or phone may switch from the stereo music profile to a hands-free communications profile when the microphone is active. Compare ordinary local music playback, check the selected output and input devices, and verify that the source supports the profile you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is crackling evidence of a hardware failure?

If crackling, popping, or distortion occurs with multiple sources, at close range, with neutral settings, after firmware updates and a reset, the fault may be in the headphones. Contact the manufacturer for warranty, repair, or replacement guidance.

The Bottom Line

Find the boundary of the fault before buying anything: compare local and streamed audio, test close to the source, remove interference and extra connections, verify output and Windows settings, then update, reset, and re-pair. If the problem follows the headphones across sources, use manufacturer support; if it stays on one PC, focus on that computer’s Bluetooth adapter, driver, and profile.
