When an audio plug-in is missing, fails validation, crashes a scan, or loads without audio, the cause is usually a plug-in path, format mismatch, compatibility problem, authorization failure, blocklist entry, or audio-device route—not a mysterious failure inside the effect itself. Start by recording your DAW and operating-system versions, plug-in format and version, and whether the problem occurs in a blank project. Then test one format, one plug-in instance, and one audio path at a time. This guide gives separate procedures for Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools on macOS and Windows, including safe rescans, validation recovery, crash isolation, routing tests, and cache resets.

What should I record before changing anything?

Freeze the variables first. Write down the DAW name and exact version, operating system and version, plug-in name and version, format (VST2, VST3, Audio Units or AAX), installation location, and the symptom: absent from menus, failed validation, crash or hang during scanning, or a loaded plug-in that produces silence. Note whether the same problem appears in a new blank project or Set.

Do not troubleshoot several variables simultaneously. Remove extra plug-ins from the test, use one instance of the suspect plug-in, and keep the project simple. In Ableton Live, use one format consistently for a given plug-in in a Set; mixing VST2 and VST3 copies of the same processor can make it unclear which copy is failing.

Why is a plug-in missing from the DAW?

A missing entry normally means the DAW is not scanning the folder that contains the plug-in, is scanning the wrong format, or has rejected the file during compatibility or validation checks. Verify the file and format before changing mixer routing.

Check the installed file and format

  • Confirm that the installer completed and that the plug-in file exists on disk. A VST3, AU and AAX installation can place different files in different system locations; installing one format does not make the others appear.
  • Check that the plug-in supports your operating system, CPU architecture and DAW version. An older binary may install successfully but be omitted from the menu.
  • Remove obsolete or duplicate versions after confirming which projects depend on them. Duplicate VST2 and VST3 files can create confusing names and repeated validation attempts.

Rescan folders in Ableton Live

  1. Open Preferences and the Plug-Ins tab.
  2. Enable the folder that actually contains the plug-in. If you use a custom VST2 folder, point Ableton to that folder; do not point the VST2 and VST3 custom-folder settings at the same directory.
  3. Wait for the normal scan to finish, then look in the browser under the appropriate plug-in category.
  4. For a deeper scan, hold Alt on Windows or Option on macOS while clicking Rescan. This forces Ableton to re-examine files that a normal scan may have cached.

If the file is not in the selected folder, rescanning cannot find it. Move or reinstall it into a folder that the DAW is configured to scan, then repeat the deep rescan.

Rescan Audio Units in Logic Pro

  1. Open Logic Pro > Settings > Plug-in Manager (the exact Settings label can vary slightly by Logic release).
  2. If the Audio Unit is absent from the manager, reinstall it using the developer’s current installer and restart Logic.
  3. If it appears in the manager but is unavailable in an existing project, select it and choose Reset & Rescan Selection.
  4. If several Audio Units are missing or invalid, use Full Audio Unit Reset, then reopen Logic and allow the complete validation pass.

A full reset is broader than selecting one plug-in, so use it when multiple units are affected rather than as the first response to a single failure.

Check AAX availability in Pro Tools

Pro Tools loads AAX plug-ins, not VST or Audio Unit files. Verify that an AAX version was installed and that it is compatible with your Pro Tools release and operating system. If the plug-in appears after installation but disappears after a scan, continue with the validation and cache procedures below instead of installing unrelated formats.

How do I fix a failed validation or blocked plug-in?

Validation failures indicate that the DAW could not safely initialize the plug-in. Authorization, an incompatible build, a damaged installation, or a previous crash can all leave the file unavailable.

Work through compatibility and licensing in order

  1. Read the plug-in developer’s compatibility notes for your exact DAW and operating-system version. Update the plug-in if a newer build is required.
  2. Open the developer’s licensing or activation application and confirm that the license is activated to a valid location. If the product uses iLok licensing, update iLok License Manager and verify the account, machine activation or USB license connection.
  3. Close the DAW before running the plug-in installer. Installing while the DAW is open can leave files locked or cause a failed validation.
  4. Restart the computer, launch the DAW, and run its single-plug-in reset or rescan command.

Soundtoys documents that an invalid activation, an iLok connection issue, or running its installer while the DAW is open can result in a plug-in being blocklisted. The same sequence is a useful diagnostic pattern for other licensed plug-ins: fix the license or connection, reinstall with the DAW closed, then rescan.

When Logic reports “failed validation”

In Logic’s Plug-in Manager, select the failed Audio Unit and choose Reset & Rescan Selection. If it fails again, confirm the developer’s supported Logic and macOS versions and install the latest compatible plug-in build. Repeated failures after a valid activation usually point to an incompatible or damaged binary rather than a mixer setting.

Why does a plug-in load but produce no sound?

Separate audio-device and routing faults from plug-in faults. First prove that the track receives signal and that the DAW can play audio without third-party processing; only then test the plug-in’s controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a bypass and signal test

  1. Confirm the track’s input meter moves, the track is not muted, and monitoring or record-enable settings match your intended input.
  2. Bypass every third-party plug-in on the track and master channel. If audio returns, re-enable processors one at a time until the silent or faulty instance is identified.
  3. Check the plug-in’s own bypass, wet/dry mix, output gain, side-chain requirements and preset. A 100-percent dry signal, a closed gate or a missing side-chain can sound like a failed plug-in even when it is operating.
  4. Insert only the suspected plug-in in a new, blank project or Ableton Set. Use a known-audible source such as a recorded clip or a software instrument, and avoid templates with hidden sends and automation.

Ableton recommends this blank-project isolation test because it reveals whether the plug-in itself triggers the fault or whether the original Set, routing, automation or another device is involved.

Use built-in audio in Logic to isolate an interface

  1. In Logic, open Settings > Audio.
  2. Temporarily disconnect the external audio interface.
  3. Choose the Mac’s built-in input and output devices, then play the same project or a blank test project.

If playback works through built-in audio, the plug-in is unlikely to be the root cause. Update or service the interface, its driver or control software, and reconnect it only after the built-in path is stable. Apple specifically recommends bypassing third-party Audio Units first; if the problem disappears, bypass individual units to identify the one that needs further investigation.

Check platform-specific routing in Ableton and Pro Tools

In Ableton, open Preferences > Audio and verify the selected input and output device, driver type and channel configuration. In Pro Tools, confirm the selected Playback Engine, I/O setup and track output bus. A plug-in cannot produce audible output when the host is sending the track to a disconnected bus or unavailable hardware output.

What should I do if the DAW crashes or hangs while scanning?

Treat the last plug-in in the scan as a suspect, not as a confirmed culprit. A scan can pause on an expired demo, a license-dongle prompt or a plug-in that cannot initialize. Logic scans can take 10 minutes or more after an update, so distinguish a slow scan from a repeatable crash before force-quitting.

Recover Ableton Live from a bad scanner state

  1. Launch Ableton with third-party plug-in scanning disabled, or use its documented option to start without third-party Audio Units when available.
  2. Close Ableton and move the suspected plug-in file temporarily outside every folder that Ableton scans. Do not delete it; moving it preserves a recovery path.
  3. Reopen Ableton and confirm that the DAW is stable. Update or reinstall the removed plug-in with the DAW closed.
  4. Return one format or one plug-in file to the scanned folder and rescan. If the crash returns, leave that build out and contact the developer with the DAW version, operating system and crash details.

Ableton notes that outdated plug-ins are very often the cause of crashes and performance issues. Updating old processors and removing duplicate or obsolete builds reduces future scan failures.

Handle a Logic scan that appears frozen

Allow extra time when the progress indicator is still moving; Apple notes that a post-update scan may take 10 minutes or more. Watch for an expired demo asking for authorization or a USB license-dongle alert that is waiting for input. If the scan repeatedly stops at the same item, quit Logic, remove or update that Audio Unit, then reopen and validate it separately.

Keep Pro Tools tests limited to AAX

Pro Tools scans AAX files. Move a suspected AAX file out of the AAX plug-in folder temporarily, reopen Pro Tools, and add it back only after updating or reinstalling it. Testing one AAX plug-in at a time prevents a VST or AU installation from obscuring the actual Pro Tools failure.

When should I reset plug-in caches?

Use the DAW’s normal reset and rescan controls first. Cache deletion is a last resort because it can trigger a lengthy full scan and revalidate every installed plug-in.

Logic and Audio Unit cache reset

Start with Plug-in Manager’s Reset & Rescan Selection or Full Audio Unit Reset. Older Logic troubleshooting workflows may require quitting Logic and moving Audio Unit cache files out of ~/Library/Caches; Arturia documents this as a force-rescan method. Move files to a temporary backup location rather than deleting them, then reopen Logic and wait for validation to finish.

Pro Tools AAX cache locations

For Pro Tools 2023.12 and later, Arturia documents these cache locations:

Operating system AAX cache location Safe approach
macOS /Users/Shared/Pro Tools/AAXPluginCache/ Quit Pro Tools, move the cache contents to a backup folder, then relaunch and allow a complete scan.
Windows C:UsersPublicPro ToolsAAXPlugInCache Quit Pro Tools, move the cache contents to a backup folder, then relaunch and allow a complete scan.

Do not confuse a plug-in cache with a license. Clearing a cache does not create an activation; it only makes the host inspect installed files again.

Which troubleshooting step applies to my DAW, format and symptom?

The same symptom has different fixes depending on the host and plug-in format. Use this matrix to choose the narrowest action first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom Logic Pro (AU) Ableton Live (VST2/VST3/AU) Pro Tools (AAX)
Plug-in absent Plug-in Manager; reinstall and restart if absent. Enable the folder containing the file; keep VST2 and VST3 folders distinct; deep rescan with Alt/Option. Verify an AAX installation and supported version.
Validation or authorization failure Reset & Rescan Selection; check compatibility and activation. Check the license, iLok connection where applicable, and install with Live closed. Check AAX compatibility, license activation and iLok software.
No sound after loading Bypass third-party AUs; test built-in input and output with the interface disconnected. Verify track input, monitoring, output device and one plug-in in a blank Set. Verify Playback Engine, I/O routing and one AAX instance in a blank session.
Crash or hang during scan Allow 10 minutes or more when progress continues; watch for demo or dongle prompts; remove the repeating AU. Disable scanning or move the offending file outside the scan folder, then update and test one format. Move the suspected AAX file, relaunch, update or reinstall, then rescan.
Normal rescan fails Use Full Audio Unit Reset, then consider the older cache-file method. Repeat the deep rescan after correcting folders and duplicates. Reset the AAX cache for Pro Tools 2023.12 or later.

How can I prevent plug-in failures from returning?

  • Keep the DAW, plug-ins, iLok License Manager or other licensing software, audio-interface drivers and operating system within the compatibility range documented by their developers.
  • Choose one format for each plug-in in a project and avoid retaining unnecessary duplicate builds.
  • Install or update plug-ins while the DAW is closed, then validate one new product before installing a large bundle.
  • Maintain a small blank test project or Set with a known source, master output and no third-party processing. It becomes a repeatable control when a production session fails.
  • Back up projects before replacing plug-in versions. A project saved with a newer build may not open identically with an older one.
  • Keep license credentials and USB dongles available during scans, and renew expired demos or remove them if they are no longer needed.

What is the fastest decision path?

  1. Missing from the menu: verify the file, format and scan folder; then run the host’s rescan.
  2. Validation or blocklist message: check compatibility and activation, update licensing software, reinstall with the DAW closed, and reset that item.
  3. Loads but is silent: prove track input and output, bypass all third-party plug-ins, switch Logic temporarily to built-in audio if relevant, and test one instance in a blank project.
  4. Scan crash or hang: wait if progress continues, watch for license prompts, then move the repeating file out of the scan folder and update it.
  5. Still unresolved: reset caches only after the normal controls fail, preserving moved files and backups so you can restore a working state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use VST3, AU and AAX versions of the same plug-in in one project?

You can install multiple formats, but each DAW uses its supported format: Logic uses Audio Units, Pro Tools uses AAX, and Ableton can use VST2, VST3 and (on macOS) Audio Units. Choose one format consistently for a given plug-in in an Ableton Set and remove unused duplicates when troubleshooting so you can identify the exact file being tested.

Why does a plug-in scan stop at the same percentage every time?

The scanner may be waiting for an expired demo to be authorized or for a USB license device to respond. If there is no prompt and the same file is always last, move that file outside the scanned folder, relaunch the DAW, and update or reinstall that plug-in before adding it back.

Will deleting a plug-in cache remove my presets or license?

A cache stores scan or validation data, not the plug-in’s activation entitlement. Moving cache files can force a full rescan, but presets stored in their own folders and licenses managed by the developer’s licensing system remain separate; back up custom presets before any reinstall.

How can I tell whether my audio interface or my plug-in is at fault?

Bypass all third-party processing and test the same project through the computer’s built-in input and output. If audio returns only after the external interface is disconnected, concentrate on the interface, driver or control software; if silence remains, continue isolating the plug-in and host routing.
