If videos won’t play, first find out whether the problem affects one title, one app, or every video service—and whether you mean an Apple TV streaming box or the Apple TV app on another device. That quick check helps distinguish a service or account issue from a network or device problem. Then work through the checks below, starting with the one that matches what’s failing.
First, identify what is not playing
“Apple TV” can mean an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD box, or the Apple TV app on a smart TV, streaming device, game console, or another platform. The available settings and update steps differ. Apple’s support hub separates help for Apple TV app streaming, Apple TV devices, and service or repair.
Check the scope before changing settings:
- Does only one movie, show, or live event fail, or does no video play?
- Does the Apple TV app fail while another video app works, or do all video apps fail?
- Can another device on the same Wi-Fi play video?
If the problem is limited to one title or app, investigate that content or service first. If playback fails across apps or devices, the network or a broader service interruption is more likely than a fault in the Apple TV box.
Check for a service, provider, or account problem
For Apple TV app content, check Apple’s System Status. If you are watching through a third-party streaming app, check that provider’s service status too. When a service is down, wait for it to recover and try again rather than repeatedly changing device settings.

If a purchase or subscription in the Apple TV app will not play, make sure the correct Apple Account is signed in and that you can complete any password or verification request. If other video apps work but one third-party app does not, use that app’s update and sign-in steps; Apple directs users to the app developer for help with another streaming app downloaded from the App Store.
Test the network before blaming the Apple TV
Try another title, then try playback on a second device connected to the same network. If that device also fails, the internet connection is a stronger lead than the Apple TV alone. Pause bandwidth-heavy activity—such as other streams or large downloads—and try again. Apple notes that several people using the internet at once can slow the connection.

Restart the Apple TV and your network equipment. On an Apple TV box, the documented restart path is Settings > System > Restart. Restart the router and modem as well, then test playback again. If other devices still cannot stream after these basic checks, contact your internet provider.
If your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, a wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the weak link. Apple advises keeping the Apple TV and router in the same room when possible, but not placing the Apple TV directly on or within 30 cm of the router. Avoid obstructions such as metal surfaces.

Check whether the connection supports the video quality
Slow or congested internet can cause buffering, interruptions, or reduced picture quality. Apple’s streaming troubleshooting guidance states that HD streaming requires a connection of 8 Mbit/s or faster. For 4K streaming, Apple recommends a minimum of 25 Mbps. These are different quality thresholds, not guarantees of uninterrupted playback; household traffic and device compatibility still matter.
Apple says a device may automatically switch to a lower-quality version when the connection is too slow. If a video starts but buffers or looks poor, pause competing network use and retry. For 4K, check that the title, device, display, software, and connection all support that format.

Update the software and try the Apple TV app diagnostic
Install available software updates for the device and app. On compatible internet-connected smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, Apple says the Apple TV app updates automatically; other platforms use their own update process.
On supported devices that offer the feature, open the Apple TV app sidebar and choose Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start, then follow the on-screen instructions. Apple says the tool tests the network connection and can help resolve playback issues. Its availability varies by device, country, and region, so not seeing this option does not by itself indicate a problem.

Choose the right next step
- Apple or the streaming provider reports an outage: wait for service to return, then retry.
- Multiple devices fail on the same network: contact your internet provider if restarting the router and modem does not help.
- Only one third-party app fails: contact that app’s developer.
- Apple TV hardware still fails after updates and restarts: use Apple TV support to find device-specific help and service options.
- A purchased movie or show still will not play: Apple says you can visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund where applicable.
