You can keep your existing phone number when moving from a physical SIM (pSIM) to an eSIM. The carrier replaces the physical SIM’s credentials with a downloadable eSIM profile; your plan, number and billing account stay the same. The exact path depends on your phone, operating-system version, carrier and country. On a supported iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy, the transfer may take only a few minutes. If the “Convert to eSIM” or “Transfer” option is missing, the carrier must usually issue the eSIM through a QR code, app, activation link or manual details.
What actually changes when you move a number to eSIM?
An eSIM is a SIM chip built into the phone rather than a removable card. During conversion, the carrier authenticates your line and downloads a profile containing the credentials that identify your subscription to the mobile network. The phone number remains attached to the carrier account, not to the piece of plastic you remove.
Activation normally disables the old physical SIM for that line. That is why you should keep the card until the eSIM can place a call, send a text and use mobile data, but you should not expect both profiles to remain active for the same number after a successful replacement.

What should you prepare before starting?
Completing these checks first prevents a failed activation from leaving you without service.
- Check handset support. Apple supports eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later when the wireless carrier supports it. Google and Samsung support eSIM on selected models; availability varies by model and market.
- Confirm carrier eligibility. Ask whether your exact model and line can be converted or transferred, and whether identity verification is required.
- Update software. Install pending system updates. Google’s automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later and the current version of Google Play Services; Apple’s iPhone-to-iPhone Quick Transfer requires iOS 18.4 or later on both phones.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. The eSIM profile must be downloaded, and a transfer can briefly interrupt cellular service.
- Keep the old phone nearby, unlocked and charged. This is required for device-to-device transfer and avoids an authentication timeout.
- Have account credentials ready. Keep the carrier login, account PIN, identity documents and any QR or activation code available.
- Do not throw away the physical SIM yet. Retain it until calling, texting and mobile data have all worked on the eSIM.
How do I convert a physical SIM to eSIM on the same iPhone?
On an eligible iPhone, iOS can replace the inserted SIM without changing your number or requiring a new plan.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and make sure it is unlocked.
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Select the phone number associated with the physical SIM.
- Tap Convert to eSIM when that option appears.
- Follow the on-screen carrier verification and activation prompts. Leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi until iOS reports that the plan is active.
- Place a call, send a text and turn off Wi-Fi briefly to test mobile data.
The conversion control appears only when the carrier, iPhone model, software and region support Apple’s on-device method. When the eSIM plan activates, the previous SIM is deactivated, so the old card will stop registering on the network.

How do I move my number to a new iPhone?
Use Apple’s Transfer From Nearby iPhone option when both devices are available. It moves the cellular plan during setup instead of making you type activation details.
- Place the old and new iPhones close together, with Bluetooth turned on.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
- Keep the old iPhone unlocked and connected to power if possible.
- On the new iPhone, begin setup and choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone when the cellular-plan screen appears.
- Approve the transfer on the old iPhone and complete any carrier authentication.
- Wait for the new iPhone to show cellular service before erasing or trading in the old phone.
Apple requires both iPhones to run iOS 18.4 or later for this Quick Transfer path. Once the plan activates on the new handset, the previous SIM is deactivated. If the old phone is not an iPhone, or the transfer control does not appear, use one of the carrier-delivered methods below.
What can I do if iPhone does not show “Convert to eSIM”?
A missing control usually indicates a carrier, model, software or regional restriction rather than a fault with the phone. Ask the carrier to replace the physical SIM with an eSIM for the existing line.
Apple documents several delivery methods:
- Carrier activation: the carrier pushes a notification to the iPhone; open it and follow the activation prompts.
- QR code: scan the carrier’s code from the eSIM setup screen. Use a code issued for your line, not a photograph found online.
- Carrier link: open the activation link supplied by the carrier on the iPhone.
- Carrier app: sign in to the official app and choose its eSIM replacement or activation function.
- Manual entry: type the SM-DP+ address and activation code supplied by the carrier when prompted.
For a move from a non-Apple phone, contact the carrier before wiping the old handset. The carrier may provide a QR code or perform activation directly, and it may need to verify your identity before disabling the physical SIM.

Pixel phones can transfer a SIM during initial setup or later from Settings. Automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later, the current Google Play Services version and a screen lock on the phone.
During setup of a new Pixel
- Keep the old phone close to the Pixel and leave both phones powered on.
- When Pixel setup asks about mobile service, select the SIM or number you want to move.
- Tap Transfer, then approve the request on the other device if prompted.
- Tap Activate and wait for the carrier profile to download.
- Test a call, text and mobile data before resetting the old phone.
After the Pixel is already set up
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap Add SIM.
- Choose Transfer SIM from another device.
- Keep the source phone nearby and follow the identity and activation prompts.
If Pixel does not detect the other device, check that the requirements are met, retry once on Wi-Fi and then contact the carrier. A persistent failure generally means the carrier must activate the eSIM manually or issue a QR code.

How do I convert a SIM to eSIM on a Samsung Galaxy?
On Galaxy models and carrier versions that support conversion, Samsung places the control in SIM Manager.
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
- Select the physical SIM card you want to replace.
- Tap Convert to eSIM.
- Read the carrier notice and confirm the conversion.
- Keep the phone connected while the eSIM profile is downloaded and enabled.
- Make a test call, send a text and verify mobile data.
Samsung describes this as transferring information from the physical SIM (pSIM) to the phone’s built-in eSIM. Menu labels and availability differ among Galaxy models, carrier firmware and regions. If Convert to eSIM is absent, request an eSIM replacement from the carrier rather than repeatedly resetting network settings.

The main distinction is whether the phone can convert an inserted SIM itself or needs a carrier-issued activation. This table summarizes the documented paths and their prerequisites.
| Platform | Same-device path | New-device transfer | Stated prerequisites | Fallbacks | Old SIM after activation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular/Add eSIM > select number > Convert to eSIM | Transfer From Nearby iPhone | iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later with carrier support; Quick Transfer requires iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones, Bluetooth, same Apple Account and the old phone unlocked | Carrier activation, QR code, carrier link, carrier app or manual entry | Previous SIM is deactivated when the new plan activates |
| Google Pixel | Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device (after setup) | Select SIM, Transfer, then Activate during setup | Automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services and a screen lock | Carrier activation or QR code when detection fails | Carrier controls deactivation as the replacement activates |
| Samsung Galaxy | Settings > Connections > SIM manager > select SIM > Convert to eSIM | Not one universal Samsung path; carrier or model may provide a separate transfer flow | Supported Galaxy model, carrier firmware and region; Samsung says availability varies | Carrier-issued eSIM replacement, commonly delivered by QR code or app | The physical profile normally stops working when the carrier replacement is active |
“Supported” in this table means the manufacturer documents the function; your carrier still has to permit it for your line and location. A phone purchased for another market can therefore show different menus from an apparently identical model.
What should I do when activation fails?
First determine whether the problem is a temporary connection issue or an eligibility issue. Do not erase the source phone or discard its SIM while the line is unverified.
No activation prompt appears
Return to the cellular or SIM settings page and check for a pending carrier notification. If no option exists, contact the carrier and ask specifically for an eSIM replacement for your existing number. Have the handset’s exact model and account verification information ready.
The transfer starts but does not finish
- Reconnect both phones to reliable Wi-Fi and keep them close together.
- Make sure the source phone is unlocked, charged and not in the middle of another system update.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled for an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer.
- On Pixel, verify Android, Google Play Services and screen-lock requirements.
- Retry once. Repeated retries can create multiple pending activations without fixing a carrier-side block.
The eSIM shows installed but there is no service
Wait several minutes, restart the phone and check that the new line is selected for calls, messages and mobile data in SIM settings. If the carrier has not provisioned the profile correctly, only the carrier can repair or reissue it. Keep the old SIM and source phone available for identity checks.
Calls work but data or texts do not
Check that the eSIM line is enabled and selected as the mobile-data line, then test again with Wi-Fi disabled. If only one service is missing, report the exact symptom to the carrier; it may indicate incomplete provisioning rather than a hardware problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I verify that the number really moved?
Use three separate tests because a partial activation can make one service appear healthy while another is not.

- Call a different phone and confirm the caller ID shows your usual number.
- Send and receive an SMS or other carrier text message.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and load a web page or another data-dependent service over cellular data.
Check the phone’s SIM settings afterward to ensure the eSIM is enabled and labeled correctly. Only after all three tests succeed should you remove the old card permanently, reset the previous phone or hand it to someone else.
Can I use the old physical SIM as a backup?
Keep it physically until verification, but do not rely on it as a working duplicate after a replacement activation. The carrier normally deactivates the old profile when the eSIM becomes active, and dual-SIM behavior varies by device and carrier. If you need a second active number, ask the carrier for a separate line rather than trying to reuse the retired card.
When is a carrier visit or support call unavoidable?
Carrier involvement is the practical solution when the phone lacks a conversion control, the source device is unavailable, identity verification fails, or an activation attempt remains stuck. Support can check whether the line is eligible, revoke a failed eSIM download and issue a new activation code. Tell the representative that you want to retain the existing number and replace the physical SIM, not open a new line.
Have the account holder available, because carriers may require a passcode or identity document. If the phone was bought in another country, provide its exact model number; regional eSIM restrictions can apply even when the product family supports eSIM elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will converting to eSIM change my phone number or contract?
No. A successful conversion replaces the SIM credentials attached to the existing line. Your phone number, plan and billing relationship remain with the carrier unless you separately request a plan change.
Can I move the eSIM back to a physical SIM later?
Usually this is handled as a new SIM replacement rather than an on-phone undo button. Contact the carrier, request a physical-SIM replacement for the same line, and wait for confirmation before removing the eSIM.
Why does the same phone model have eSIM menus in one country but not another?
Manufacturers ship different regional variants and carriers enable different features in their network profiles. Country, carrier firmware and the exact model identifier can therefore change which setup choices appear.
Do I need the account holder to activate an eSIM?
Often yes. Carriers may require the account holder’s login, PIN or identity verification before issuing a replacement profile. If the line belongs to an employer or another person, arrange authorization before starting.
What information should I give support after a failed transfer?
Provide the exact phone model, operating-system version, line number, time of the attempt and the last step that completed. Say whether calls, texts or data work, and whether the old SIM still shows service; those details help the carrier decide whether to re-provision or reissue the eSIM.
