You can transfer your phone number to an iPhone Duo using Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer if your carrier supports it. Keep both iPhones nearby, signed in to the same Apple Account, with Bluetooth on; the old iPhone must be unlocked, and both phones must run iOS 18.4 or later. During iPhone Duo setup, follow the transfer prompts. If setup is finished, use Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM. iPhone Duo has no physical SIM tray, so its cellular plan must be activated as an eSIM.
What do you need before transferring an eSIM?
Check the carrier and device requirements before starting. Apple’s Quick Transfer instructions require both iPhones to meet the setup conditions below; your carrier must also support eSIM Quick Transfer. Support can vary by carrier, so confirm availability with your provider if you do not see the transfer option.
- Carrier support: Your wireless carrier must support eSIM and eSIM Quick Transfer.
- Compatible software: Update both iPhones to iOS 18.4 or later.
- Same Apple Account: Sign in to both iPhones with the same Apple Account.
- Nearby devices: Keep the old and new iPhones close together and turn on Bluetooth.
- Access to the old iPhone: Unlock it with its device passcode when prompted.
- Internet for activation: Connect iPhone Duo to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
Because iPhone Duo is eSIM-only, a physical SIM from an older phone cannot be inserted into it. If your existing number is on a physical SIM, ask your carrier which eSIM activation method it supports for moving that line.
How do you transfer your number during iPhone Duo setup?
Start iPhone Duo setup and choose the option to transfer your phone number when it appears. Follow the on-screen instructions on both phones and wait for the new eSIM to activate.

- Turn on iPhone Duo and begin setup.
- When asked to transfer a phone number, choose the transfer option.
- Follow the instructions shown on iPhone Duo and the previous iPhone. You may need to tap Transfer on the old phone or enter a verification code displayed on iPhone Duo.
- Keep the devices nearby while activation completes.
When the plan activates on iPhone Duo, the SIM associated with that plan on the previous phone is deactivated. Do not assume the old phone can continue using that same line after activation.
How do you transfer an eSIM after iPhone Duo is already set up?
You can start the transfer from Settings after finishing initial setup. Select the plan from your previous iPhone, or choose the nearby-iPhone option if the plan is not listed.
- On iPhone Duo, open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose the cellular plan to transfer from another iPhone. If no numbers appear, tap Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Follow the prompts on the previous iPhone. Tap Transfer or enter the verification code shown on iPhone Duo if requested.
- Wait for activation to finish.
The exact wording can vary depending on the screen and setup stage. The key path after setup is Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, as described in Apple’s eSIM transfer guidance.

What if eSIM Quick Transfer is not available?
Quick Transfer is not the only way to activate an eSIM. Apple lists carrier activation, a QR code, an activation link, the carrier’s app, manual entry of eSIM details, and carrier-assisted transfer from a non-Apple device as alternatives. Which options you can use depends on your carrier.

These methods are carrier-dependent, not interchangeable guarantees. Contact your provider to learn which one it supports for your line and region, and follow the provider’s instructions. Apple’s guidance also describes a carrier webpage flow: if a banner says Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan, tap it and complete the steps on the carrier’s webpage.
How do you transfer two phone numbers?
Apple says iOS 26 or later can transfer more than one phone number to a new iPhone when the carrier supports it. Dual SIM lets two numbers make and receive calls and messages, but the phone uses only one cellular data network at a time.
For plans from two different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked, or both plans must be from the same carrier. If you are moving more than one line, follow the available transfer prompts for each plan and check with the carrier if a line does not appear.

How should you manage the two lines?
- Give each plan a clear label, such as Personal and Business, so you can distinguish them.
- Choose which line handles cellular data; Dual SIM does not use both networks for cellular data at the same time.
- For a travel line or a second number, confirm that the plan is active with its carrier before relying on it for calls, messages, or data.
Why is the transfer option missing or failing?
Work through the setup conditions first, then check for a carrier-specific activation route. A missing Quick Transfer option does not by itself mean the number cannot be moved; the carrier may require another eSIM method.
- No transfer option appears: Check that both phones are on iOS 18.4 or later, signed in to the same Apple Account, nearby with Bluetooth on, and that the old iPhone is unlocked. Then ask the carrier whether it supports Quick Transfer.
- No plan or number appears in Cellular settings: Tap Transfer From Nearby iPhone if offered. If the plan still does not appear, check carrier support and ask whether it can activate the line by QR code, link, app, manual details, or carrier activation.
- A carrier setup banner appears: Tap Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan and complete the carrier webpage flow.
- The old phone is Android or another non-Apple device: Contact the carrier. A carrier-issued QR code or carrier activation may be needed unless the carrier and both devices support a newer cross-platform transfer method.
- Activation does not complete: Confirm iPhone Duo is connected to Wi-Fi or a hotspot, then contact the carrier for help with the line’s activation.
Apple’s support instructions establish the device-side steps and alternatives, but they do not establish which carriers or countries support each method. Your provider is the source for availability on your specific plan.

Can I put my old physical SIM into an iPhone Duo?
No. iPhone Duo has no physical SIM tray. Ask your carrier to move the line to an eSIM using a method it supports.

Will transferring an eSIM erase the old iPhone?
Apple’s eSIM transfer procedure describes moving the cellular plan, not erasing the previous phone. It does say that the old SIM is deactivated when the plan activates on the new iPhone.

Can I transfer a phone number from an Android phone without visiting a store?
Possibly, but it depends on your carrier and whether the devices support the newer cross-platform transfer method. Ask the carrier whether it can complete the move remotely or provide a QR code or another activation method.
