To move to a new Chromebook, sign in with the same Google Account to restore supported synced settings, then separately copy local files—especially anything in Downloads—from the old device. “Googlebook” is not Google’s product name; the official name is Chromebook. This process restores synced account information and transfers selected files, not a complete copy of the old computer’s storage.

What transfers automatically—and what does not

Chrome and ChromeOS sync can restore supported account information when you sign in to the new Chromebook with the same Google Account. Depending on the sync settings, that can include bookmarks, apps, extensions, browsing history, passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and device settings. Work or school administrators may disable sync, and the categories available depend on the account’s settings. Review Google’s Chromebook sync instructions and Switch to a Chromebook.

Sync is not a copy of the old Chromebook’s entire disk. Files saved locally, including files in Downloads, are not included in ChromeOS sync. Back them up separately to Google Drive or compatible external storage before you stop using the old device. Photos stored in Google Photos can be accessed through that service.

Choose a file-transfer method

Method Best when What to check
Google Drive You have internet access and enough available Drive space, or want files available through your Google Account. Upload the needed local files from the old Chromebook, then open Drive on the new one. Google says files may take a short time to appear.
External storage You want an offline copy or have files you would rather move directly. Check connector fit and filesystem compatibility. Copy files from the old Chromebook onto the storage device, then copy them into My files on the new one.
Quick Share You need to send selected files to a supported nearby device. It is a convenience for individual transfers, not a guaranteed way to migrate everything. Google’s Chromebook instructions describe support for ChromeOS 91 or later and Android 6.0 or later; Quick Share is off by default and organizational policy may restrict it.

Google’s file-transfer guidance covers Drive and external devices in Switch to a Chromebook. For Quick Share, see Google’s instructions for sharing files with nearby devices.

Transfer files and settings step by step

1. Check the old Chromebook and account

  1. Confirm which Google Account you use on the old Chromebook. Use that same account on the new one.
  2. If you used Chrome on another computer, sign in to Chrome there and check which sync categories are enabled. Bookmarks, apps, and extensions saved to the account can appear after you sign in on the new Chromebook; available ChromeOS sync categories may also include history, passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and settings.
  3. Open the Files app and inspect Downloads and any other local folders for items you want to keep. Copy those files to Drive or external storage; do not assume they are synced.
  4. Check Google Photos separately if you store pictures there. Files stored in the service are available through your Google Account.

2. Back up local files

For Drive, upload the files you want from the old Chromebook. For an offline copy, connect compatible external storage, open the Files app, and copy the files onto it. If you use both routes, you have an account-accessible copy and a separate physical copy.

3. Set up the new Chromebook

  1. Connect the new Chromebook to the internet and follow its on-screen setup prompts. Google lists internet access and Google Account credentials among the setup requirements; see Set up your Chromebook.
  2. Sign in with the same Google Account used for Chrome sync on the old device. Supported synced information can then become available as sync completes.

4. Retrieve your files

  • From Drive: Open the Files app, select Google Drive, and allow time for files to appear. Copy files into My files if you want local copies on the Chromebook.
  • From external storage: Connect the device, open the Files app, select the storage device, and copy the wanted items into My files.

5. Check apps and important files before retiring the old device

Android app backup and restore controls are on by default according to Google, but app data may not fully sync across multiple Chromebooks. Open important apps on the new device and confirm that the data you need is present. Also inspect your transferred files before wiping, trading in, or handing over the old Chromebook. Google describes Android app backup and restore at Install and use Android apps on your Chromebook.

Using a USB drive or external hard drive

Chromebooks can access several filesystems, including FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. Google also lists journaled HFS+ as read-only, along with ISO9660 and UDF. Support can depend on the device and format; see Google’s file types and external-device guidance.

If the Files app does not recognize a storage device, do not format it as a first troubleshooting step: formatting erases its files. First make a separate copy of anything important, for example by connecting the device to another computer and uploading its files to a cloud service such as Drive. Then troubleshoot compatibility. Check that the drive’s connector fits the Chromebook and that its filesystem is supported.

If you want to transfer only a few files nearby

Google’s Chromebook Help calls the feature Quick Share, noting that “Nearby Share is now Quick Share.” Use it for selected files between supported nearby Chromebooks, Android devices, and Windows PCs. The Chromebook flow in Google’s instructions lists ChromeOS 91 or later and Android 6.0 or later; the feature is off by default, and an organization may restrict it. See Share files with nearby devices.
