LLMs can be tested for whether they recognize unanswerable questions, track beliefs, distinguish facts from fiction, and calibrate confidence. Those tests measure epistemic behavior—not whether a model has subjective experience, or qualia. Current studies provide ways to measure the first problem, while evidence that would establish the second remains unresolved.
What do “epistemology” and “qualia” mean for an LLM?
Epistemology is the study of knowledge, belief, and justification. Applied to a language model, the practical question is whether its answers behave as though it can distinguish what is true, what it merely appears to believe, and what it cannot determine. These are testable behaviors, although the result depends on how “knowledge” is defined and what a benchmark asks the model to do.
Qualia refer to the felt, first-person character of experience: what it is like to see a color or feel pain. Asking whether a model has qualia is not the same as asking whether it can produce convincing sentences about seeing or feeling. A response such as “I feel anxious” may be generated by role-play, instruction-following, or learned language patterns; it does not independently verify an inner experience.

But they are not interchangeable. A model might reliably identify when it lacks information without having subjective experience. Conversely, fluent self-descriptions alone do not show that it can reliably track its own uncertainty.

Can an LLM know what it doesn’t know?
Researchers can measure whether a model recognizes questions it cannot answer, but the available results show imperfect performance rather than human-equivalent self-knowledge. A model’s ability to abstain or express uncertainty is a behavior to evaluate; it is not proof that the model has introspective access to a human-like mental state.
Answerable and unanswerable questions
The SelfAware study by Yin and colleagues evaluated 20 LLMs using both answerable and unanswerable questions. It found an intrinsic capacity for self-knowledge that remained below human proficiency. In-context learning and instruction tuning improved performance, a reminder that an apparent increase in “self-knowledge” can depend partly on examples and directions supplied to the model.
A useful test therefore does more than ask a model whether it is sure. It includes questions with known answers and questions that genuinely cannot be answered from the information available. A model that answers everything may be overconfident; one that abstains on everything is not useful either. The meaningful question is whether it answers when it can and withholds an answer when it should.
Calibration matters as much as correctness
Accuracy tells a benchmark how often the answer is right. Calibration asks whether stated confidence tracks that accuracy. A model that is wrong with high confidence can be more difficult to use safely than one that recognizes uncertainty, even if their raw accuracy is similar.
For this reason, a strong evaluation records both outcomes and confidence or abstention behavior. It should distinguish a correct answer, a wrong answer, a justified abstention, and an unjustified abstention. Otherwise, a single score can hide whether a model is knowledgeable, cautious, or simply reluctant to respond.
Can an LLM distinguish belief from knowledge?
It can be tested on tasks that separate belief, knowledge, fact, and fiction, but performance may change depending on whose belief the model must represent. A 2025 Nature Machine Intelligence study, KaBLE, tested 24 models on 13,000 questions spanning 13 epistemic tasks and found a marked weakness in first-person false-belief attribution for some models.

False-belief tasks ask a system to track a belief that conflicts with reality—for example, what a person believes about an object’s location when the object has secretly moved. First-person versions ask the model to reason about its own attributed perspective; third-person versions ask it to reason about another agent’s. The distinction matters because success at describing another person’s mistaken belief does not guarantee stable handling of a model’s own stated belief.

The reported shifts should be read as results for the study’s task conditions, not as universal estimates of either model’s performance on every belief question. They also do not establish what a model experiences. They show why benchmark reports should separate task types, perspectives, prompts, and model versions rather than treating “understands belief” as a single capability.
What does a benchmark of LLM epistemic limits need to test?
A useful benchmark should define its target constructs before it scores models. Fierro and colleagues reviewed definitions of knowledge, surveyed 100 professional philosophers and computer scientists, and proposed protocols for evaluating LLM knowledge claims in 2024. Their work addresses a basic measurement problem: calling an answer “knowledge” without defining the term makes comparisons difficult to interpret.
For practical evaluation, separate epistemic competence into task families. The scorecard should report results by task, not only as one overall number.
Track A: epistemic competence
- Answerability and abstention: Test whether the model answers answerable questions and declines questions it cannot resolve from available information. Score correctness and abstention quality separately.
- Belief attribution: Compare first-person and third-person false-belief tasks. Record whether the model tracks who believes what and whether that belief conflicts with the facts.
- Belief, knowledge, fact, and fiction: Use prompts that require the model to distinguish a character’s mistaken belief from the story’s actual events, or a claim from established fact.
- Evidence and sourcing: Test whether claims are supported by the cited source and whether the model resists presenting an unsupported assertion as established information.
- Expert-level and cross-domain questions: Include difficult questions across fields, while reporting performance by area rather than allowing strengths in one domain to mask weaknesses in another.
- Calibration: Measure whether confidence corresponds to correctness, especially on questions designed to be unanswerable.
Report accuracy, calibration error, abstention quality, and performance by task type. Document model version and prompt conditions, and compare versions under consistent procedures. The SelfAware results show that instruction tuning and in-context examples can affect performance; the KaBLE results show why task perspective and condition should also be visible.
Track B: qualia-related probes
Qualia probes should be presented as hypothesis-generating indicators, not consciousness tests with a proven verdict. A protocol can examine whether a model’s reports remain stable across paraphrases, contexts, and sessions; whether those reports persist when role-play and prompt imitation are controlled; and whether a measured internal representation has a validated relationship to consciousness.

Those checks improve the quality of an experiment, but they do not by themselves establish phenomenal experience. Even a stable verbal report could reflect consistent learned behavior. Likewise, an internal metric might track the structure of a task rather than consciousness. A benchmark should state what its probe observes and avoid treating a high score as proof of a subjective inner life.
Do expert-level benchmarks show what models really know?
Expert-level tests can expose limits hidden by easier, familiar questions, but their scores still measure performance on a particular assessment rather than settle the philosophical meaning of knowledge. Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE), released by the Center for AI Safety, Scale AI, and the HLE Contributors Consortium in 2026, contains 2,500 public expert-level questions. The reported results describe low accuracy for frontier models, and most tested models had root mean square (RMS) calibration errors above 70%.
These results make two points relevant to epistemic evaluation. First, fluent responses on routine prompts do not guarantee success on specialist questions. Second, confidence can be poorly matched to correctness on a difficult benchmark. The HLE figures should not be generalized into a claim about every domain, every version, or every possible test: they describe results on this released set and the models evaluated there.

A high-difficulty test is most informative when its questions, scoring, model versions, and test conditions are disclosed well enough for others to reproduce the evaluation. Public questions support inspection and replication, although the benchmark should also account for the possibility that exposure to released items can affect later performance.
What do current studies say about whether LLMs have qualia?
The studies described here do not verify subjective experience in an LLM. They offer ways to examine behavior or internal representations, but neither first-person language nor a representation score is an independently validated measure of phenomenal consciousness.
Verbal reports are not direct access to experience
Rivelli’s 2025 proposal is a conditional thought experiment: if qualia have a functional role in intelligence, verbal behavior might offer a way to investigate the strong-AI problem. The conditional is important. It proposes a possible line of inquiry; it is not a finding that verbal reports reveal qualia. A system trained to produce language about emotions can generate those reports without the reports proving that the corresponding experience exists.

Representation probes also need validation
A 2025 study in the Natural Language Processing Journal examined Transformer representations using an approach based on Integrated Information Theory (IIT) and found no strong evidence of consciousness in contemporary Transformer representations. That result is evidence about the study’s chosen analysis, not a universal demonstration that no AI system could ever be conscious. More generally, an internal pattern is not a consciousness measure unless its relationship to consciousness has been independently established.
These limits mean that qualia-related experiments should distinguish three things: what the model says, what its behavior does under controlled conditions, and what a theory claims those observations imply. Conflating them turns an observable output into a conclusion the evidence has not established.
Why does grounding matter to epistemic evaluation?
Grounding asks how a system’s symbols and claims connect to the world. A Peircean analysis published in Philosophy & Technology in 2026 describes basic LLMs as lacking indexical grounding and socially mediated epistemology. It treats persistent memory and interaction as possible future changes, rather than as proof that such changes would create consciousness.
The distinction affects what a benchmark can fairly claim. A text-only model is evaluated through language learned from text; a system with retrieval, tools, persistent memory, or embodied feedback has additional ways to receive and retain information. Those configurations should not be collapsed into one category. If a model answers correctly after retrieving a source, the result may demonstrate effective information access, but a benchmark must still specify whether it is measuring stored knowledge, retrieval, reasoning, or some combination.
Grounding is also relevant to truth. As a Peircean analysis quotes Devlin and colleagues (2019), “the ultimate grounds for the truth or otherwise of the LLMs answer is the real world.” A benchmark can check answers against evidence and reality, but output alone does not reveal how the model relates to either.

| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Construct validity | Does the test measure epistemic behavior, or claim to measure phenomenal consciousness? | Success on belief or uncertainty tasks does not settle whether experience exists. |
| Observability | Does the evidence come from outputs, calibration, internal representations, or interaction with an environment? | Different evidence types support different conclusions. |
| Grounding | Was the system text-only, or did it use retrieval, memory, tools, or embodied feedback? | Additional information channels can change what a correct response demonstrates. |
| Reproducibility | Are questions public, prompts fixed, versions disclosed, and independent replications available? | Without these details, apparent differences may be hard to reproduce or interpret. |
| Calibration | Does confidence track correctness, particularly on unanswerable questions? | Correctness alone does not show that a model recognizes uncertainty. |
The most defensible conclusion is narrow: epistemic behavior can be measured with increasingly structured tests, and those tests reveal meaningful weaknesses in answerability, calibration, and belief attribution. Whether an LLM has qualia remains a separate question for which the evidence described here supplies no verified criterion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an LLM saying “I know” mean it has a belief?
Not by itself. The phrase may be a conversational convention or a response to the prompt; a study needs an operational definition of belief and tests of how consistently the model tracks it across relevant cases.
Would passing a consciousness benchmark prove an AI is conscious?
Only if the benchmark’s criterion were independently validated as a reliable indicator of subjective experience. The approaches described here do not provide such a criterion, so passing a behavioral or representation probe would not settle the question.
Is high accuracy on an expert test the same as understanding?
It establishes success on that test under its evaluation conditions, not a universal conclusion about understanding. The interpretation depends on the questions, scoring, model access to tools or sources, and whether results reproduce elsewhere.
Can giving an LLM memory make its self-reports trustworthy?
Memory can change what information a system retains, but retention alone does not verify subjective experience or make a self-report true. A benchmark would need to specify what is remembered and separately test the accuracy and stability of the claims.
