You can playtest a simulation game without knowing its genre by treating your unfamiliarity as useful evidence: it shows whether the game itself communicates its goal, core loop, choices, constraints, and consequences. Give players only the information they need to operate the build, observe what they do before asking what they think, and check whether they can explain cause and effect or apply a lesson in a new situation. Do not make genre knowledge—or a general “Did you like it?”—the test.
Why is genre unfamiliarity useful in a simulation-game playtest?
A player who has never played this kind of simulation is less likely to fill in gaps with conventions learned elsewhere. If they cannot tell what counts as progress, which action matters, or why a result occurred, that may reveal a communication problem in the game rather than a failure to know the genre. Their unfamiliarity is not a verdict on whether the game is good; it is a way to inspect what the game teaches on its own.
Playtesting is a way to find out whether an unfinished game or experience performs as intended. Carnegie Mellon University describes it as useful for uncovering gameplay and level-design flaws, bugs and glitches, vague points, boredom, and balance problems. Its concise summary is: “Playtesting is an integral part of game design.” The important implication here is that a session should investigate a specific design question, not ask a novice to judge an entire genre they may not know.
Tester experience matters. A 2021 survey by Cristiano Politowski, Fabio Petrillo, and Yann-Gaël Guéhéneuc reports that developers rely heavily on manual playtesting and testers’ intrinsic knowledge, and concludes that testing needs to account for differences between game types. There is no one-size-fits-all process. In that survey’s postmortem dataset, 50 of 1,035 analyzed problems concerned testing—4% of that dataset, not a claim that only 4% of game-development problems generally involve testing.

How do I playtest a simulation game if I don’t know the genre?
Choose one primary question, observe a short, relevant slice of play without explaining the intended strategy, and compare what the player expected with what the game showed. Then use a brief interview and, if relevant, a second segment with the intended onboarding to see whether the player can apply what they learned.
1. Choose one question for the session
“Test the whole game” is too broad to guide a useful session. Pick one primary uncertainty and build the session around it. For example:
- Can a new player identify what they are trying to accomplish?
- Can they infer a useful first action without knowing genre terminology?
- Do they notice what changed after taking an action?
- Can they recover after an error or unexpected result?
- Does the tutorial explain enough without replacing discovery?
- Can they carry a learned principle into a different scenario?
Other observations may be worth noting, but the primary question should determine which game moment you show, what you ask the player to do, and what evidence you will consider meaningful. If the question is about delayed consequences, for example, choose a segment long enough for a consequence to appear rather than expecting an opening-minute test to answer it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Recruit people with contrasting experience
When practical, include three experience profiles, because each can expose a different problem:
- Genre-unfamiliar players show whether the game explains itself without relying on inherited conventions.
- Players of comparable games can reveal problems with terminology, pacing, systems, or balance that a novice may not yet be able to assess.
- Players from the intended audience can help assess whether the game delivers its intended fantasy, depth, and motivation to continue.
These groups are complementary, not interchangeable. A novice may miss a convention that experienced players take for granted; an experienced player may silently supply an explanation the game never provides. Note which profile produced each observation so you do not treat every reaction as representative of every player.
There is no universal sample size established for this kind of playtest. The survey supports adapting testing to the game type and tester expertise, but does not set a scientifically required number of genre-unfamiliar participants. Treat any session count as a practical choice based on your question, available players, and the consistency of the evidence—not as a published threshold.
3. Give a neutral brief, then observe
For a first-encounter clarity test, provide only the minimum technical information needed to operate the build. Do not explain that it is a city builder, farming sim, management game, or another genre; do not describe the intended strategy or point out a system you want the player to notice. Those details can prompt the very assumptions the session is meant to examine.

You can invite the player to say what they think they are trying to do as they play. During the observed moment, avoid coaching or correcting them. If they ask for help, note the moment and what they asked; whether you answer depends on the session’s purpose. For a clarity test, rescuing them immediately can hide a problem. For a later usability or tutorial test, a hint may be appropriate, but record that the hint was given.
Watch what happens before asking for an opinion:
- What do they look at first, and what do they believe the goal is?
- Which action do they try first, and what do they expect it to do?
- What feedback do they notice, overlook, or misread?
- Can they connect an action to an immediate result or a delayed consequence?
- When do they ask for help, abandon an action, or change strategy?
- If something goes wrong, can they identify a route to recovery?
- What seems to influence their decision to continue, pause, or stop?
This blind first encounter is a practical application of general playtesting and onboarding principles; it is not a published, simulation-specific protocol.
How do I know whether players understand the simulation?
Do not require a player to name the genre or repeat tutorial wording. Look for a usable mental model: can they describe what they are pursuing, predict a consequence, and make a reasonable next choice based on what the game has shown them?
Use these questions to assess the model:
- Goal: What does the player believe counts as progress or success? If there is no single win condition, can they identify a meaningful short-term aim?
- Loop: Can they describe the repeated sequence of decisions and consequences that structures play?
- Resources: Do they understand what can be gained, spent, limited, or traded—and what those resources enable?
- Constraints: Do they see why some choices carry a cost or why not every option can be optimal?
- Feedback: Can they tell whether an action helped, hurt, or made no apparent difference?
- Time: Do they distinguish immediate results from delayed ones, and understand which effects can be reversed?
- Transfer: Can they apply a principle they discovered to a different situation rather than only repeat a sequence of tutorial instructions?
These are useful prompts for observation, not a formal scorecard or a claim that every simulation must expose each system in the same way. A player’s explanation is most informative when you can compare it with what they actually did and the expectations they voiced before seeing the outcome.
What should I watch for in a simulation-game playtest?
Separate usability, comprehension, engagement, fun, balance, and technical quality. A player can operate the controls but misunderstand the system, understand the system but dislike it, enjoy the experience while misreading its rules, or encounter a bug that makes every other observation unreliable.
| Question | What it concerns | Example evidence to note |
|---|---|---|
| Can the player operate the game? | Usability: interface, controls, navigation, and access to information. | They cannot find or activate a relevant control, or take an unintended action while trying. |
| Can the player explain what is happening? | Comprehension: goals, rules, feedback, and consequences. | They predict one result, see another, and cannot explain the difference. |
| Do they choose to continue? | Engagement: willingness to explore or pursue another decision. | They stop after a particular event, or voluntarily try another approach. |
| Does the experience produce the intended response? | Fun or satisfaction: the emotional quality the design aims to deliver. | Their description of the experience and their choices to continue or disengage. |
| Do choices feel meaningful? | Balance: whether outcomes seem arbitrary, predetermined, or shaped by decisions. | They describe a choice as consequential—or cannot see a reason to choose between options. |
| Is the build interfering with judgment? | Technical quality: bugs, glitches, and performance problems. | A crash, broken interaction, or technical delay interrupts the observed decision. |
Do not translate every negative response into “the tutorial is bad.” If a player understands the rules but finds the loop repetitive, that is different from a player who cannot tell what an action did. Likewise, if a glitch blocks an action, separate that technical issue from a conclusion about the game’s design. Game testing covers different concerns, and the right diagnosis depends on what happened.
Should I tell playtesters what genre the game is?
Not before a session whose purpose is to find out whether the game communicates itself. Naming the genre can hand players a mental model they might otherwise have to build from the game’s goals, interface, and feedback. For a session about how experienced players interpret conventions, however, genre familiarity is part of the condition you may intentionally want to examine.

Keep the task consistent with the question. If you are testing first-session clarity, explain only controls or technical requirements that would otherwise prevent someone from starting. If you later want to see how players from a target audience respond to the game’s premise, tell them what they need to know for that separate question and record that context. Do not compare a prompted session with an unprompted one as if they were the same test.

First observe what the player understands without the explanation you plan to provide; then test the intended onboarding on its own terms. The second segment should show whether the tutorial helps someone form and use a mental model, not merely whether they can repeat its instructions.
Apple’s onboarding guidance favors an interactive experience in which players can safely test an action, discover a feature, or try a mechanic. It also advises keeping prerequisite onboarding brief and avoiding flows that demand too much memorization. For a simulation, a useful tutorial sequence can let a player make a consequential choice, see an immediate or delayed result, inspect feedback, adjust a plan, and use the idea again in a slightly different situation.
Pay attention to transfer. If a player succeeds only when following an instruction verbatim, the tutorial may have taught a sequence without teaching the principle behind it. A small change in context can reveal whether they understood why an action worked. That does not mean every onboarding test needs a complicated new scenario; it means the evidence should go beyond successful button presses.
What questions should I ask after a playtest?
Ask about the player’s expectations and decisions before inviting a broad evaluation. Neutral questions help you compare what they did with what they thought would happen, without implying that there was a correct answer they missed.

- “What were you trying to do?”
- “What did you expect to happen?”
- “Why did you choose that action?”
- “What information did you use?”
- “What would you try next?”
- “What part felt unclear?”
- “What would make the result easier to understand?”
- “At what point, if any, did you feel in control?”
Start with the player’s own account before naming a system. Asking “Did you understand the economy?” can lead the conversation toward your terminology before you know what they thought was happening. A useful interview follows a behavior: what the player noticed, what they expected, what result they saw, and how they would respond now.
How can I use metrics without mistaking them for understanding?
Use a small set of measures tied to your question, then read them alongside observation and interview evidence. A fast first action is not automatically a good outcome if players misunderstand what it does or cannot transfer the lesson to another situation.

Practical measures may include time to first meaningful action, unprompted help requests, wrong turns, abandoned actions, hint or tutorial completion, recovery after failure, and a player’s post-session explanation of the core loop. These are proposed measures, not universal standards; choose only those that help answer the session’s question. A useful record pairs a measure with context—for instance, whether an abandoned action followed unclear feedback, a deliberate change of plan, or a technical problem.
If you compare two onboarding, control, or hint variants, decide on the goal metric and planned duration before interpreting results. Roblox’s official experimentation documentation describes comparing onboarding experiences across players and measuring playtime, retention, and other KPIs. Its documented experiment duration range is 14–60 days. That is a platform-specific range for Roblox experiments, not a recommended duration for every independent playtest or a substitute for designing a suitable study.
Roblox also cautions against acting on early anomalous results or results without statistical significance, and says quantitative results should be balanced with qualitative feedback and the game’s overall vision. A dashboard can show that one variant was associated with a change in a metric; observation and follow-up help explain whether players understood the experience better. Do not let a single number decide a trade-off it cannot represent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many people do I need to playtest my game?
There is no universal, evidence-backed sample size for testing a simulation game with genre-unfamiliar players. The research cited here does not establish a required number, session length, or pass threshold, so presenting one as a scientific rule would be misleading.
Instead, decide what evidence you need. For an early clarity check, recruit a mix of relevant experience profiles where practical and look for recurring or high-impact misunderstandings. If observations conflict, ask whether different players are revealing different contexts or whether the test question is too broad. For a quantitative comparison, the number of participants and duration need to fit the design and analysis of that experiment; Roblox’s 14–60-day documentation is not a general sample-size answer.
How should I decide what to fix first?
Prioritize misunderstandings that recur, block progress, trigger abandonment, or affect the central loop. A repeated confusion caused by missing communication is more urgent than a one-off preference, but a single observation can still matter if it exposes a severe barrier or an expensive-to-recover-from mistake.
For each issue, record the moment, the player’s action, their expectation, the result they saw, and what they said afterward. Then ask whether the problem came from the game’s communication, an unfamiliar convention, a usability obstacle, or a technical failure. Fix the smallest plausible design element that explains the issue and retest that same moment with fresh players. Someone who has learned a workaround is not proof that the design now communicates clearly.

When comparing versions, use several relevant axes rather than declaring a winner from one metric: first-goal discoverability, time to meaningful action, accuracy of predicted outcomes, cause-and-effect explanation, recovery, transfer, perceived agency, willingness to continue, and technical stability. A shorter tutorial might speed up clicks yet leave players less able to explain or apply the system. The appropriate choice depends on the design goal and the evidence, not on a single attractive measure.
What does this mean for your next session?
Start with one uncertainty about how the game communicates, recruit players whose experience makes that uncertainty visible, and preserve a neutral first encounter. Observe goals, actions, expectations, feedback, delayed consequences, and recovery before asking for opinions. Then separate comprehension from usability, engagement, fun, balance, and technical quality; test whether onboarding supports transfer; and combine qualitative observations with carefully chosen measures. The aim is not to make an unfamiliar player behave like a genre expert. It is to learn what the game itself has—and has not—made understandable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I record a playtest session?
A recording can help you revisit the sequence of actions and feedback, but tell participants what will be captured and how it will be used before recording. If recording is not appropriate or practical, structured notes tied to specific moments can still preserve the evidence you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I run a simulation-game playtest remotely?
Remote sessions can be useful when the question concerns comprehension or onboarding, but make sure the player can access the build and communicate what they expect as they act. If connection or setup problems interfere, note them separately rather than attributing those interruptions to the game’s design.
What if a playtester has played similar games but not this one?
Treat them as familiar with the design space, not as a substitute for a genre newcomer. Ask what conventions they expected and compare those assumptions with what the game actually explains; that can reveal both useful genre language and places where your design depends on prior knowledge.
Should I let playtesters look things up while playing?
That depends on whether you are evaluating the game’s self-contained first encounter or the experience players are expected to have with normal access to help. Decide before the session, keep the condition consistent, and note when outside information changes a player’s choices.
