A breach report or alarming message does not by itself prove that your account or device was affected. Verify the incident with the organisation through a channel you find independently, then check account activity and device symptoms separately: exposed information, unauthorised account access, and malware on a device are related but different questions.
If you suspect active account access or a compromised device, contain the risk while you investigate. Use a clean device to change exposed or reused passwords, revoke sessions you do not recognise, and contact your bank promptly about suspicious transactions. If a device may be compromised, disconnect it from the internet and run an updated antivirus scan; never install a scanner offered by a pop-up or unsolicited caller.
What does it mean for an account or device to be affected?
“Affected” can describe several situations, and evidence of one does not automatically prove the others. A company may have exposed information about you without anyone using your account. Your account may have been accessed through a stolen password even if your own device is clean. A device may show signs of malware without being connected to a particular company breach.

A breach-checking service can indicate that a detail, such as an email address, appeared in a known dataset.
- Account access: someone may have signed in, changed settings, sent messages, or made transactions without your permission. Account alerts, login and device history, and confirmation from the service help assess this.
- Device compromise: a phone or computer may have unwanted software or changed settings. Symptoms can prompt investigation, but they do not prove malware on their own.
Keep these questions separate as you work through the checks below. A positive breach-check result is not proof that someone logged into your current account, and a clean device scan cannot establish whether a company exposed your personal information.

How can I verify that an organisation had a breach?
Contact the organisation through an official channel you locate independently. Ask whether an incident occurred, whether you are included in its affected group, what information was involved, and what action it recommends.
- Open a bookmark you already trust, type the organisation’s known domain yourself, or use its known app. You can also use a phone number on an official website or statement.
- Find the organisation’s security or support information through that channel. Do not use a link, phone number, or QR code in an unsolicited breach message to reach it.
- Ask what happened and when, which categories of information were involved, whether your account or records were in scope, and what remediation is offered.
- Keep the notice and record its date. Retaining the notice helps you track what the organisation said and distinguish a genuine update from a later imitation.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises people to find out whether they were affected by contacting the organisation through its official website or social media channels. The important safeguard is to reach that channel independently rather than trusting contact details in an unexpected message.
Be especially cautious of follow-up messages that arrive after a breach becomes public. A criminal may use the organisation’s name or incident details to make a request seem credible. Treat requests for passwords, banking details, identity confirmation, compensation information, or remote access as suspicious until you have verified them independently. The NCSC also warns that banks and other official organisations will never ask for personal information or banking details via email.
How do I check whether someone accessed my account?
Review the account’s own security evidence: alerts, recent sign-ins, recognised devices, recovery details, and activity you did not initiate. If anything looks wrong, use the service’s official support route rather than a contact method supplied in a suspicious message.
Look for account warning signs
- You are locked out or your password no longer works.
- A login alert, location, session, or device is unfamiliar.
- Your recovery email address, phone number, or security settings have changed unexpectedly.
- You receive password-reset notifications you did not request.
- Messages, social posts, or other activity appear that you did not create.
- You see unexplained payments or other transactions.
These are reasons to investigate, not automatic proof of who accessed the account or how. The Australian Cyber Security Centre lists unexpected password-reset notifications, unfamiliar logins, changed settings, unrecognised messages, and unrecognised payments among indicators of account compromise.
Review the history that can reveal misuse
Check recent login and device history, security settings, and the recovery email address and phone number on file. For an email account, inspect sent and deleted messages as well as password-reset alerts; for social accounts, look for posts and messages you did not send. Review payment activity for transactions you do not recognise.

One unfamiliar event deserves attention, but avoid treating a single alert as a complete account of what happened. Verify the event inside the service or by contacting its official support channel. If you cannot access the account, use the service’s independently located account-recovery or support route.
How urgent is the situation?
Use the strongest evidence and the potential harm to set priorities. A routine exposure notice with no suspicious activity calls for verification, password hygiene, and monitoring. An unfamiliar login, changed recovery detail, lockout, or unauthorised payment calls for immediate containment while you continue investigating. A device showing several compromise symptoms should be disconnected before you use it for banking or password changes.
- Act immediately: unauthorised transactions, an account you can no longer control, a changed recovery address or phone, or a device that appears to be actively communicating or changing files.
- Act promptly: an unexpected reset alert, unfamiliar session, suspicious message, or breach confirmation involving a password you reused elsewhere.
- Monitor and verify: a news report, unconfirmed message, or negative breach-check result without other evidence.
Urgency does not change the verification rule. Even when you need to act quickly, reach the bank, service, or organisation through a known app, bookmark, typed domain, statement, or independently found official number.
How can I tell whether my phone or computer has malware?
Look for a cluster of unusual changes, such as unexplained slowness or heat, unexpected restarts, unfamiliar apps, pop-ups, changed settings, or files you can no longer access. None of these symptoms alone proves a device is infected, so investigate safely rather than assuming a particular cause.
Symptoms worth checking
- The phone or computer becomes unusually slow or hot.
- It restarts unexpectedly, or its screen flickers.
- You find unfamiliar applications, pop-ups, or settings changes.
- It asks for additional permissions unexpectedly.
- Files or other data become inaccessible, or you see storage warnings that do not make sense to you.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security identifies poor performance, heat, flickering screens, pop-ups, extra permission messages, and storage warnings as possible signs of a hacked device, while noting that these signs are not conclusive on their own. Consider whether the symptom has another plausible explanation, but do not dismiss it if it appears alongside unfamiliar applications, account activity, or other unexpected changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the device without adding risk
- If compromise seems plausible, disconnect the device from Wi-Fi or a wired network while you assess it. This is a precaution to reduce ongoing exposure; it does not establish what happened.
- Run a full scan with an updated, trusted antivirus product. Do not install a “scanner” advertised by a pop-up or offered by a caller.
- Record the symptoms and any scan detections so you can describe what you observed when seeking help.
Do not use a suspected device to enter banking credentials or to change the password of your primary email account. Use a clean, trusted device for those actions. Keep notes of the device model, operating system, time symptoms began, applications you do not recognise, and any alerts shown. Those details help official support or a security professional distinguish a device problem from an account problem.

What can a breach-checking service tell me?
A breach-checking service can tell you whether a detail appears in the breach datasets it checks; it cannot confirm that your current account was accessed. A result is one piece of evidence about exposure, not an account-access log.
The NCSC names Have I Been Pwned as an example of a tool for checking whether details appeared in public breaches. Similar checks may also be included in antivirus products or password managers. If a check returns a match, treat the exposed detail as a reason to protect any account where you used the associated password or information. If it finds no match, that does not rule out an undisclosed breach or one missing from that service’s dataset.
Use a checker as an optional exposure check, not as a substitute for asking the organisation whether you were in scope or reviewing account activity. Do not provide sensitive information to a service or message simply because it claims it can check a breach.
Should I pay for monitoring?
Free official checks and the organisation’s own notices are the first line because they provide direct information about scope and required action. A password manager with breach monitoring can add convenience by alerting you when an email address or other detail appears in datasets it tracks. Antivirus products may offer similar alerts.
These optional commercial tools do not prove account access, recover a compromised account, or replace login-history checks. Compare them by evidence strength, privacy, cost, and scope: an official confirmation is stronger evidence than an automated alert; a free check may expose less information to a third party; and a paid service may cover multiple accounts but require a subscription and additional personal data. Review the provider’s terms and what data it retains before enrolling. You do not need a paid product to change passwords, revoke sessions, enable multi-factor authentication, or contact your bank.
What should I do if my information or account may have been exposed?
Prioritise containment over trying to determine every detail first. Protect the affected account, any other account sharing its password, and financial accounts showing suspicious activity.

- Change exposed and reused passwords from a clean device. If you used the exposed password elsewhere, change it on every account where it was reused. Use a unique password for each account, or a passkey where the service supports one.
- End access you do not recognise. Revoke unknown sessions or devices using the account’s security controls, and check whether recovery details or other security settings were changed.
- Turn on stronger sign-in protection. Enable multi-factor authentication where available. It adds a layer beyond a password; follow the service’s own setup guidance.
- Update software. Install available operating-system and app updates on your devices.
- Watch financial activity. Review transactions and contact your bank promptly about anything unauthorised.
- Report the incident through the relevant national channel. The appropriate reporting route depends on where you are; use an official government or cyber-security organisation’s channel that you locate independently.
If the device itself may be compromised, use a clean device for password changes and other sensitive account actions. A suspected device should remain disconnected while you assess it; an updated full antivirus scan can provide additional evidence, but it does not answer whether a separate service suffered a breach.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I preserve as evidence?
Save the original notice, its date and sender details, screenshots of unfamiliar logins or settings, transaction records, and antivirus scan results. Do not forward suspicious links or attachments to other people. Preserving evidence before deleting messages can help the organisation, bank, or national reporting service understand what happened. Keep copies in a location that is not accessible only from the suspected account or device.
How should I choose the next check?
Match the action to the evidence and the scope of the concern. Organisation confirmation addresses whether your information was included; account records address possible account use; a device scan addresses possible unwanted software.
| Concern | Best next evidence | Immediate response | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| A company says it had an incident | Confirmation and scope from its independently verified official channel | Ask what data was involved and follow the organisation’s verified remediation advice | Whether someone has logged into your account |
| An account may have been accessed | Sign-in and device history, alerts, security and recovery settings, messages, and transaction records | Protect the account, change reused credentials, revoke unknown sessions, and enable stronger sign-in protection | Whether a device has malware or which organisation exposed information |
| A detail may have appeared in a known breach | A breach-checking service’s result, followed by checks of relevant accounts | Change any exposed password and any password reused elsewhere | Whether the current account was accessed; a negative result also cannot rule out an unlisted breach |
| A phone or computer may be compromised | Recorded symptoms and a full scan from updated, trusted antivirus software | Disconnect it from the network if compromise is plausible; use a clean device for sensitive actions | Whether a company breach included your data or whether a symptom has only one cause |
Password changes and session revocation address account access and are generally more targeted than resetting a whole device. A device reset is a more disruptive step; the guidance available here does not establish a universal threshold for when one is necessary. If a scan detects a threat or symptoms persist, use the device maker’s or a trusted security professional’s official support channel for advice specific to the device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I avoid being misled while investigating?
Use sources you reach independently and be sceptical of pressure to act through an unexpected message. A real incident can create the conditions for convincing impersonation, so the safer response is to verify the sender’s claims before sharing information or granting access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Do not follow unsolicited breach-message links, call its supplied number, or scan its QR code to verify the incident.
- Do not give passwords, banking details, identity confirmation, or remote access to a caller or message sender whose identity you have not verified independently.
- Do not install a security scanner promoted by a pop-up or unsolicited caller.
- Keep the original notice and its date, but use the organisation’s known app, bookmarked site, typed domain, or independently found official contact details to check it.
- Separate what a notice claims from what account records or a scan actually show. Each answers a different question.
These precautions do not mean every unusual notice is fraudulent or every device symptom is malware. They let you investigate without handing more information or control to someone whose identity is uncertain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a breach notice be real if I have not seen suspicious account activity?
Yes. A notice about exposed information and evidence of someone using an account are separate things. You can be included in an incident without seeing signs of a login, and the organisation’s verified response is the right place to ask what information was involved.
What if my breach-check result is negative?
A negative result only means the service did not find a match in the data it checks. It cannot rule out an incident that has not been disclosed or a dataset that the service does not include.
Should I contact the police after a cybersecurity incident?
Use the relevant national reporting channel for your location, and contact your bank promptly if a transaction is unauthorised. The appropriate route varies by country; locate it through an official government or cyber-security source rather than a link in an unexpected message.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is an unfamiliar login always proof that my account was hacked?
Not always. Locations can be imprecise and a device may be shared, but an unfamiliar login deserves investigation. Check the session inside the service, change the password from a clean device, revoke unknown sessions, and contact official support if you cannot explain it.
Should I factory-reset my phone or computer immediately?
Not automatically. Disconnect a device when compromise is plausible, run a full scan with updated trusted software, and record symptoms. A reset is disruptive and the appropriate threshold depends on the device and scan results; seek official device or security support if problems persist.
Can a password manager replace checking my account?
No. A password manager can help create unique passwords and may offer breach monitoring, but an alert indicates possible exposure in tracked datasets, not that someone signed in. Continue reviewing account alerts, sessions, recovery settings, and transactions.
The Bottom Line
Verify the organisation independently, then treat exposure, account access, and device compromise as separate questions. Check official account records and device symptoms, disconnect and scan a suspected device, change exposed or reused passwords from a clean device, revoke unknown sessions, enable multi-factor authentication, and contact your bank immediately about unauthorised payments.
