You cannot prove that an Etsy recipe or craft pattern was made with AI from one clue. The reliable approach is to assess several pieces of evidence together: an honest disclosure, an unedited photograph of a real finished result, consistency across every image, technically coherent instructions, and credible signs of human testing. Etsy’s current rules matter because recipes and craft patterns are functional instructions: seller-prompted AI creations must be disclosed, while AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed. Use the checks below to decide whether a listing is transparent and usable, merely AI-assisted, or too risky to buy.
Can you prove that an Etsy listing was made with AI?
No. A glossy image, unusual wording, or an AI-detector score can raise a question, but none proves authorship. Treat the process as a risk assessment: collect observable facts, weigh them together, and separate a possible policy violation from a pattern or recipe that is actually unusable.
A seller may use software for brainstorming, image cleanup, or other disclosed assistance while still doing the design work. Conversely, a listing can look handmade and still contain generated instructions or simulated photographs. A disclosure is therefore useful evidence of transparency, not a guarantee that the file is accurate. The absence of a disclosure is a policy concern to investigate, but it is not proof that AI was used; a seller might not have used AI at all, or might have misunderstood when disclosure was required.
How should I inspect an Etsy listing before buying?
Work through the listing in a fixed order so that a persuasive cover image does not outweigh missing evidence. Save screenshots or notes as you go, especially when a preview is likely to change.
1. Read the disclosure and the seller’s explanation
Look in the description, not only in the title or image captions. If AI was used, a useful explanation identifies what the seller prompted or supplied, what they edited, and which parts they designed, tested, photographed, or revised. “Made with AI” without any account of the human work tells you little about whether the instructions are dependable.

2. Require a real, unedited finished-result photo
Etsy requires at least one unedited photograph of the actual item for most listings. For a recipe or craft pattern, the listing should show at least one real, unedited result made using the product; an AI-generated image cannot be the only finished-result evidence.
For a pattern, inspect close-ups of stitch structure, seams, joins, shaping, and materials. You should be able to see physical texture rather than a smooth, illustration-like surface. For a recipe, look for a dish whose ingredients and method could plausibly produce what is shown, preferably with useful stages or an ordinary kitchen context rather than one isolated “hero” image.
A real photo is evidence that an object or dish exists, not proof that the purchased instructions created it. A seller could photograph a prototype made by another method, so connect the image to the exact file through the description and your questions.

3. Compare every image for identity consistency
Open each listing image at full size and compare details that should remain stable. Check the same eyes, nostrils, seams, stitch texture, plate, pan, utensils, background, and material colors. Ask whether the object changes shape between views or whether a tool, hand, or stitch structure appears physically impossible.

Such differences can indicate generated or composited images, but they can also result from separate prototypes, editing, or poor photography. Record the exact mismatch instead of relying on “it looks AI.”
- Countable details, such as eyes, legs, buttons, or repeated motifs, should not change without an explanation.
- Light direction, shadows, and contact with the table should make physical sense across views.
- Materials should behave consistently: yarn has stitch definition, dough has texture, and a finished seam does not melt into a painted line.
- If colorways are different samples, the seller should label them rather than presenting them as one identical result.
4. Test a pattern’s arithmetic and physical logic
Use the preview, sample pages, or any free instructions to perform a small audit before purchase. The Knitting Guild Association identifies common AI-pattern failures such as missing rows, incorrect stitch counts, unworkable shaping, fabric behavior that defies physics, and charts that contradict written directions.
- Recalculate the starting chain or cast-on, every increase and decrease, each repeat, and the final stitch count.
- Match chart symbols to the written row or round; a chart that cannot be reconciled is a serious warning.
- Check that the stated gauge, yarn weight, hook or needle size, and finished dimensions are compatible.
- Follow shaping on paper: increases must create the claimed width, decreases must remove the claimed stitches, and joins must leave a workable path.
- Look for instructions that refer to a nonexistent color, row, diagram, or abbreviation.
Do not assume a small typo is harmless. A single omitted decrease can distort an armhole, sleeve, or motif; a missing turning chain can make an entire section impossible. Ask the seller to reconcile a preview before paying, and keep the answer for your records.

Ignore the photograph temporarily and read the recipe as an instruction set. Ingredient quantities should match the stated yield. Temperatures should suit the vessel and ingredients, timings should be plausible, and substitutions should not contradict the method.
- Check that every ingredient is introduced and that no step uses an item absent from the ingredient list.
- Look for workable unit conversions, a specified pan or vessel when it affects results, and temperatures appropriate to the cooking method.
- Make sure the sequence explains when to combine, rest, chill, cover, uncover, or adjust heat.
- Prefer sensory or physical cues—such as a target texture or a visual doneness signal—over generic prose that says only to “cook until done.”
- Question substitutions that alter liquid, fat, acidity, leavening, or cooking time without any adjustment.
Ask whether the photographed dish was made from this exact recipe and whether the seller tested the stated yield. Etsy’s requirement that functional instructions be the seller’s own work makes that provenance more important than a polished food image.
6. Treat text clues and AI detectors as weak signals
The UK House of Commons Library lists possible indicators of AI-generated text: fluent but vague language, unsupported assertions, inconsistent detail, errors in dates or names, and abrupt shifts in tone. Those traits are not unique to AI. A rushed human description can be vague, and an edited AI draft can read naturally.
AI detectors are unreliable and should not be treated as authorship proof. If you use one, give its result the lowest weight in your assessment. Do not accuse a seller because the listing uses bullet points, American spelling, polished marketing language, or a detector score; seek corroboration in the images, calculations, and seller’s answers.
7. Ask focused questions before purchasing
Specific questions reveal whether the seller knows the design beyond the sales copy. Ask:

Look for concrete answers, revision history, and references to testers rather than a blanket assurance. How can I distinguish transparent AI assistance from a misleading listing?
Use the evidence as a profile instead of a yes-or-no label. A listing can be AI-assisted yet transparent and usable, or it can combine simulated images with instructions that no one tested.
