You usually cannot tell for certain whether an email, text message, or website was created by AI from its wording alone. Check the sender and source, verify links and claims independently, look for provenance information when the format supports it, and treat writing-style clues or detector results as supporting evidence—not proof. A missing watermark or credential does not establish that a person wrote the content.
What can you actually conclude about AI authorship?
In most cases, you can identify reasons to investigate a message or page further, but not prove who—or what—wrote it. A person may write in a polished, generic style; AI can imitate a personal voice; and a text may have been drafted with AI and then heavily edited. Authorship, accuracy, and trustworthiness are separate questions.
A useful conclusion is therefore specific and limited: for example, “the sender’s identity is unverified,” “the page contains unsupported claims,” or “a provenance signal indicates that a supported tool processed this file.” Avoid turning any of those observations into a claim that a particular person used AI unless you have evidence that supports that conclusion.
- Authorship: who created the words or underlying ideas.
- Provenance: information about how a file or other supported content was created or changed.
- Reliability: whether the claims are accurate and adequately supported.
- Safety: whether interacting with the sender, link, attachment, or site could expose you to harm.
For practical decisions, safety and verifiable facts matter more than guessing at authorship. A real organization can use AI to write a legitimate message; a scammer can write a convincing message without it.

What should I check first before trusting or clicking?
Start with the source and the requested action, not the writing style. If a message asks for a password, payment, account recovery, or an urgent response, verify it through a channel you find independently—even if it reads naturally and names details that seem familiar.
- Pause on urgency or pressure. Treat claims that you must act immediately, keep the request secret, or avoid normal verification as risk signals. They do not prove AI use, but they are reasons not to follow the message’s instructions without checking.
- Verify the sender independently. Use the organization’s official website, app, or a phone number you already trust. Do not rely on contact details supplied only in the suspicious email, text, or webpage.
- Inspect the actual destination before opening a link. Check the complete domain, including misspellings, extra words, and unfamiliar endings. A familiar company name appearing in a link’s path does not make the domain itself official. If you are unsure, open the organization’s known website yourself rather than using the message link.
- Assess attachments and requests separately. An unexpected attachment or request to enter credentials, install software, disclose personal information, or send money deserves scrutiny regardless of whether the message seems AI-written.
- Verify the claim that matters. Look up named people, dates, statistics, quotations, and offers through primary or otherwise reliable sources. Do not treat a polished explanation or a citation-shaped link as evidence that the underlying claim is true.
This first check can resolve the important question—whether the message is safe to act on—even when its author cannot be identified. Google Search Central warns that generative models can produce inaccuracies and says AI-generated content should be manually fact-checked and reviewed before publishing.
What clues in the writing or website are worth noticing?
Style can suggest that you should examine a message more closely, but no writing pattern reliably identifies AI. The Swiss National Cyber Security Centre describes AI-generated website copy as often well structured, grammatically correct, neutral, and uniform, sometimes without much depth; it also cautions that prompts and editing can disguise those characteristics.
Look for a cluster of clues rather than one supposedly diagnostic feature:
- Repeated structure: several sections follow the same formula, use similar-length paragraphs, or repeat the same point in slightly different words.
- Generic transitions and phrasing: sentences move smoothly between broad ideas but provide few specific details about the situation, product, policy, or event at hand.
- Shallow or oddly balanced coverage: a page gives equal space to points that do not have equal importance, or presents pros and cons without explaining the evidence behind them.
- Unsupported certainty: the writing sounds confident while leaving out sources, qualifications, dates, or explanations that would let you check its claims.
- Logical gaps or invented references: a conclusion does not follow from the cited material, a quotation cannot be found in its stated source, or a reference appears not to support the point being made.
- A mismatch between identity and domain: the site claims to represent an organization, but its domain, contact information, or linked official pages do not match what that organization uses.
- Details that do not fit the context: a message uses the wrong name, describes an account action you did not take, or gives instructions inconsistent with the organization’s normal process.
These observations overlap with ordinary human writing and can be deliberately imitated or edited. A short, clear message may simply be short and clear; a repetitive page may have been written by a person using a template. Use style clues to decide what to verify, not to label an author.

What to inspect on a website
Check who is responsible for the page and what supports its claims. Look for an identifiable author or organization, an update date where one is relevant, editorial or contact information, and links that lead to sources capable of backing up the statements. Then check whether the same unusual wording appears on unrelated domains. Repeated text can be a clue about how the page was produced or distributed, but by itself it does not establish AI authorship or determine which copy is authoritative.
What to inspect in an email or text
Compare the request with the sender’s verified identity and the context of your relationship. A greeting that feels unusually generic, a sudden change in tone, or an overly polished explanation may be worth noticing, but none proves AI use. The more consequential checks are whether the sender can be verified independently, whether the requested action makes sense, and whether the link or contact route is legitimate.

Provenance can provide a useful positive signal when a file or medium supports it, but it usually does not prove who authored the underlying ideas. Microsoft describes provenance information as potentially including the application, model, creation time, and edit history. C2PA Content Credentials use signed manifests; OpenAI and Anthropic also document watermark or credential signals for supported content.
Interpret a positive signal narrowly. It may show that a supported tool processed the content or that certain creation and editing information was recorded. It does not, by itself, establish the human author, prove that every word came from a model, show that the content is accurate, or rule out later edits.
A missing signal is inconclusive. Metadata can be stripped when content is copied, exported, or converted; passages can be shortened; and a tool or format may not support marking in the first place. Microsoft’s Azure AI Services provenance documentation makes the same distinction: not detecting provenance information does not necessarily mean the content was not AI-generated.

How useful provenance is depends on the content and the way it reached you. A supported file may preserve information that plain text copied into a message cannot. A screenshot, quotation, or pasted passage may no longer carry the original file’s metadata. Do not infer that a signal should exist unless the specific content type and workflow support it.

Each method can examine different evidence, and each has different failure modes. A source check may tell you whether a request is safe to follow without telling you who drafted it; a provenance mark may identify a tool’s involvement without showing whether the claims are true.
| Method | What it examines | What a positive result can mean | How it can fail | Does it identify a human author? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sender, domain, link, and claim checks | Source context, destinations, requested actions, and verifiable facts | The sender or claim may be inconsistent, unverified, or risky to act on | A legitimate message can still contain an error; a deceptive sender can imitate a real organization | No. It checks identity and context, not who composed the words. |
| Provenance metadata or credentials | Supported files or media and their recorded processing information | A supported tool or editing workflow may have processed the content; signed credentials can protect the integrity of recorded information | Coverage depends on format and workflow; conversion, copying, or editing may remove or disrupt the signal | Not necessarily. A tool signal is not proof of the person behind the ideas. |
| Writing-style review | Text structure, depth, reasoning, and consistency with context | Patterns may justify checking the claims or source more carefully | Human and AI writing overlap, and prompting or editing can alter style | No. Style is not a reliable identity record. |
| Automated AI detector | Text or other content features evaluated statistically by a particular system | The system estimates that content resembles material it associates with AI generation | Results vary across systems and generators; a detector may miss AI content or flag human writing | No. A score is not a verified identity or authorship record. |
| Human-assisted review | Combined source, provenance, style, and factual evidence | Several independent, consistent signals can support a more informed assessment | Reviewers can still be misled by missing context, weak sources, or ambiguous evidence | Only if the evidence independently establishes who created it; a combined impression alone may not. |
NIST groups detection approaches into provenance-data detection, automated content detection, and human-assisted detection. The approaches are complementary, not interchangeable: a detector analyzes signals in content, while a provenance check looks for recorded information and a human review can consider source context.
Are AI detectors accurate enough to prove authorship?
No. A detector score is probabilistic evidence from a particular system, not proof that a person or model wrote the content. Do not use it as the sole basis for accusing someone or making employment, school, legal, or safety decisions.
NIST’s evaluation findings illustrate why a universal accuracy percentage would be misleading. Hariharan Iyer and colleagues reported in 2025 that performance varies significantly depending on the systems used: some generators could deceive most discriminators, while some discriminators could detect AI-generated content from almost all generators. The result depends on the generator and detector being compared; it does not establish one accuracy rate that applies to every email, text, or website.

A detector can be useful as a prompt for further review. If a result concerns consequential content, verify the claims and source, consider whether the text is long and representative enough to assess, and look for independent evidence. A score should not replace those checks, and disagreement between detectors is not a reliable way to settle authorship.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does current AI-content labeling guidance mean for ordinary readers?
AI-content transparency measures can include watermarks, metadata, cryptographic methods, logging, and fingerprints. The European Commission’s Article 50 guidance discusses such techniques while emphasizing effectiveness, robustness, reliability, accessibility, and interoperability.
That guidance should not be read as a universal rule that every private email or webpage must carry an AI label. The relevant scope depends on the AI Act provision and the type of content. For readers, the practical point is that labeling and detection mechanisms have different purposes and coverage; absence of a label does not settle authorship.
What is a careful conclusion to write down?
Describe the evidence you actually found, not a stronger conclusion than it supports. For example, record that a sender’s domain did not match the organization’s verified domain, that a claim could not be confirmed in the primary source, or that a supported provenance signal was detected. If all you have is a detector score or a generic writing style, say that authorship remains uncertain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a message become a scam just because AI helped write it?
No. AI assistance alone does not establish deception or legitimacy. Judge the sender, the requested action, the destination of any link, and whether the claims can be verified.
Should I paste a private email into an AI detector?
Be cautious about submitting confidential, personal, or workplace text to an online service. Check the service’s privacy and data-handling terms first, or use source verification and other checks that do not require sharing the message.
Can I report a suspected AI-written website as misinformation?
Report specific, checkable problems—such as a false claim, impersonation, or unsafe link—through the relevant platform or organization’s reporting process. A suspicion about AI authorship by itself is not evidence that the page is false.
Recommended Free Tools
Can AI-generated content be accurate?
Yes. How the text was produced does not determine whether its claims are true. Check important statements against reliable sources, especially when a decision depends on them.
