The most reliable way to tell whether a video game uses generative AI is to read that game’s current store-page disclosure, then verify the wording against dated statements from its developer or publisher. Record whether the disclosure covers content made during development or content generated while you play, which category it names (such as art, dialogue, voice, music, text, or localization), and the platform, version, and date. If no attributable statement confirms AI use, report it as “not confirmed from the sources checked”—not as proof that the game is AI-free. A blank page and unusual-looking art or audio are not evidence either way.
How can I check whether a specific game uses generative AI?
Use a source-first process rather than trying to detect AI from the finished assets. Start with the exact store page for the game and platform, copy the developer’s disclosure word for word, classify when generation happens, and then look for matching information in official documentation.
- Identify the exact release. Write down the title, platform or storefront, edition, and the build or update date if the page shows one. A PC version and a console version can carry different disclosures, and a later patch can change a feature.
- Read the storefront disclosure. On Steam, look for the developer’s AI disclosure associated with the Content Survey. Preserve the complete wording, not just a yes/no interpretation.
- Classify the timing. Decide whether the statement concerns material prepared during production, material generated during play, or both.
- Name the scope. Record the content category and any named feature: for example, art, music, voice, dialogue, narrative, translation or localization, or an interactive system. Note separately when the statement refers only to store or marketing assets.
- Corroborate it. Search the developer’s or publisher’s website, FAQ, announcement, credits, patch notes, terms, and privacy materials for a statement about the same game and feature. Check that its date and version match the store disclosure.
- State the evidence boundary. Explain exactly what is confirmed and what remains unknown. A scoped disclosure is not an independent audit of every asset or tool used to make the game.
This method produces a defensible answer even when the evidence is incomplete. It avoids the two common errors: calling a game “AI-generated” when only one small component was assisted, or declaring it AI-free because no label was visible.

A disclosure is a developer’s description of a defined use, not a forensic inventory. Read it as a statement with boundaries: who made it, what content it covers, when generation occurred, and where the statement applies.

It may describe assistance, not final assets
A developer might say that a tool helped produce concept art, translated text, placeholder dialogue, or other material during development. That does not establish that every asset was generated, that the tool’s output shipped unchanged, or that the game generates anything in response to player input.
It can cover store or marketing material
Some disclosures identify AI use in a store capsule, trailer, screenshots, or other promotional material rather than in the playable game. Keep that category separate. A marketing image prepared before release tells you little about what a player encounters during play.
It can be narrower than the word “AI” suggests
Record the named category and feature instead of applying a broad label. “AI-assisted localization during development” is materially different from “an NPC generates dialogue from player prompts,” even though both may appear under an AI disclosure heading.

How do I read Steam’s Content Survey disclosure?
Steam’s disclosure is the clearest starting point for a Steam release, but it remains a developer-supplied description. Valve’s Steamworks Development announcement “AI Content on Steam,” dated January 10, 2024, says the Content Survey includes an AI disclosure section covering AI use “in the development and execution of your game.” Valve also describes separate treatment for pre-generated and live-generated content.
Find the exact wording on the game’s page
Open the game’s Steam store page while signed into the relevant region if possible. Expand or scroll to the AI disclosure area and copy the text, including qualifiers such as “some,” “may,” “during development,” or “during play.” Save the date you checked and the page’s platform context.
Interpret the two timing categories
| Category | What it means | Questions to record |
|---|---|---|
| Content created during development | Material was generated or assisted before release and incorporated into the shipped build. | Which assets? Was the output edited, replaced, or used as a placeholder? Does the statement cover the game or only marketing material? |
| Content generated during play | The released game creates content while running, potentially in response to player input or state. | What feature triggers generation? Is it optional? Does it send player input to a service? What controls or limits are documented? |
Do not infer more than the text says. A disclosure that names “AI-assisted art” does not prove runtime generation; one that names a live dialogue system does not prove that other art or music was generated.
Keep policy dates attached to your description
Valve’s policy and the store interface can change. When describing the current state, cite the date you viewed the page and identify the game version when available. For a historical article, preserve the older wording rather than silently applying today’s categories to an earlier build.

How do I distinguish development-time AI from AI generated during play?
The timing determines what players encounter and what technical or privacy questions follow. Treat the two cases as separate findings, even when a store page places them under one heading.
Development-time generation
This includes an image, sound, voice line, text passage, translation, or other material made while the team was producing the game and then packaged in the release. The game can be completely deterministic at runtime even when AI-assisted tools were used in production.
Runtime generation
This occurs after launch or while a session is running: for example, a system that creates dialogue in response to a prompt, generates a description from the current game state, or adapts content through a model-backed feature. Confirm the trigger, the player-facing output, and any documented service or data handling before drawing conclusions.
Why the distinction matters
- Player experience: pre-generated content is fixed in the build; runtime output can vary between players and sessions.
- Reproducibility: a fixed asset can be reviewed once, while live output may depend on prompts, model updates, or service availability.
- Privacy: a live feature may process player input, but do not claim that it sends data off-device unless an official source says so.
- Age and safety controls: a player-facing generator may need moderation, limits, or reporting tools that a static asset does not.
Which content categories should I record?
Write down the specific category named by the source. “Uses generative AI” without a category hides the information most readers need.
| Category | Examples of what to look for | How to phrase a finding |
|---|---|---|
| Art or images | Concepts, textures, character art, backgrounds, icons | “The disclosure says AI-assisted art was used during development.” |
| Audio or music | Music tracks, sound effects, ambient audio | “The statement names AI-generated music prepared before release.” |
| Voice | Character voices, narration, synthetic speech | “The source identifies generated or assisted voices; it does not establish that every line is synthetic.” |
| Text, narrative, or dialogue | Writing assistance, scripts, NPC lines, item descriptions | “The disclosure covers text prepared during production,” or identify a live dialogue feature if stated. |
| Translation or localization | Translated interface, subtitles, or store copy | “Some localization was AI-assisted during development,” preserving the qualifier “some.” |
| Interactive feature | Prompt-driven NPCs, chatbots, dynamic quests, generated images | Name the feature and its trigger rather than labeling the whole game AI-generated. |
Also mark whether the source is talking about playable content, a store page, or advertising. A disclosure can mention more than one category and more than one timing; record each separately.
How do I verify a store disclosure with first-party sources?
Use official material to confirm the same game, feature, and period. The goal is corroboration, not a search for a more dramatic label.
Check the developer and publisher
Search the official website, support pages, FAQ, launch announcement, credits, update notes, terms of service, and privacy notice. Look for the game’s exact title, the named feature, and a publication date. A statement about a studio’s general workflow may not apply to this release.

Match scope and dates
Suppose a 2024 store disclosure says localization was assisted, while a 2026 patch note introduces a live NPC system. Report both with their dates and versions. Do not treat the later feature as proof that it existed at launch, and do not use a general studio statement to override a more specific game-page disclosure without explaining the difference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If sources use different wording, quote or paraphrase each scope. One may cover only shipped assets; another may describe experiments, prototypes, or a post-launch feature. A conflict is itself a reason to avoid a single unqualified verdict.
What if the game’s store page has no AI disclosure?
Say that use was not confirmed in the materials you checked. Do not call the game AI-free, because a blank page can reflect a missing, outdated, platform-specific, or incomplete disclosure.
Check other storefronts and editions
Compare the page for the exact platform and edition. Disclosure fields may differ between storefronts, and a console release may have a different feature set from a PC build. Record which pages you checked instead of treating one missing label as universal evidence.
Look for dated first-party material
Review launch posts, patch notes, credits, interviews hosted on the developer’s own site, and support or privacy documentation. If you find no attributable statement, write “No official confirmation of generative AI use was found in the sources checked as of [date].” In a publication, replace the bracketed date with the actual date; do not imply certainty beyond that search.
Do not use absence as a negative finding
“No disclosure found” means the evidence is insufficient, not that no tool was used. It also does not establish that a game contains live generation, because that requires a source describing the feature.
How do platform-specific runtime rules affect the check?
Some platforms impose extra disclosure requirements for player-facing generative interactions. These rules are not a universal standard, so identify the platform before applying them.

Roblox example
Roblox requires questionnaire disclosure for interactions that trigger a generative-model response. Its rules treat continuous chatbot-like interactions or memory that persists across sessions as extended interactions. Those requirements are specific to Roblox and should not be presented as a rule for Steam, console stores, or every game engine.
What to verify in a live feature
- What player action triggers generation?
- Is the interaction continuous, or does it end after one response?
- Does memory persist between sessions?
- What moderation, age gating, or reporting controls are described?
- Which platform and version do the rules and feature description cover?
Platform documentation can show that a disclosure is required, but it does not independently prove that a particular title complied or that every generated response is safe or accurate. Confirm the title-specific statement as well.
How can I compare two games fairly?
Compare like with like: the same platform context, timing category, content type, feature scope, and version date. A pre-generated store capsule and an NPC that writes dialogue from player input are different uses even if both pages contain an AI label.
| Comparison field | Game A | Game B |
|---|---|---|

| Runtime controls | Trigger, opt-in status, moderation, and documented data handling. | Trigger, opt-in status, moderation, and documented data handling. |
| Unconfirmed points | List what the sources do not establish. | List what the sources do not establish. |
This format prevents a high-profile live feature in one game from being treated as equivalent to a small amount of assisted localization in another.
How should I document the result for readers?
A short evidence note makes your conclusion auditable and keeps later updates manageable. Include the following fields:
- Game and release: title, platform, storefront, edition, and build or update date.
- Page checked: date viewed and the exact disclosure wording.
- Timing: development-time, runtime, or both.
- Scope: playable content, store or marketing material, workflow assistance, or a named feature.
- Categories: art, sound, music, voice, narrative, dialogue, translation or localization, and any other named type.
- Corroboration: official source, publication date, and whether it matches the same feature and period.
- Unknowns: tools, assets, runtime behavior, or data processing that no source establishes.
Use careful language such as: “The Steam page’s developer disclosure says that some localization was AI-assisted during development.” For a live feature, write: “The official materials describe player-triggered generated dialogue in the version dated [date].” If you found no confirmation, write: “I found no attributable statement confirming live-generated content in the materials checked; that does not establish that the game is AI-free.”

What does the AI Transparency Index show?
The AI Transparency Index is useful context for public Steam disclosures, not a census of AI use. On October 26, 2026, its page displayed 26,373 disclosures tracked: 1,528 classified as development-only, 3,715 as store or marketing-only, 18,440 as content-in-game, and 833 as live-AI records.

Those figures are the index’s classifications of public disclosure text. The page says the groups are produced by automatic analysis, mature records are excluded, and missing or unclear statements cannot establish whether a game uses AI. Treat the numbers as a dated snapshot of disclosed records, not estimates of all AI use on Steam and not independent validation of any title.
Individual entries illustrate why scope matters. One entry describes AI-assisted art and translated text while saying no AI content is generated during play; another says artwork, music, voices, and text were prepared before play. These examples demonstrate how to parse wording, but they say nothing about an unnamed game.
Why can’t visual, audio, or writing clues prove AI use?
Artifacts can prompt a question, but they cannot establish the tool, production process, or whether generated material shipped. A strange hand, repetitive phrase, unnatural voice, or inconsistent texture can result from ordinary mistakes, compression, localization, stylistic choices, or many non-generative tools.
Likewise, polished or consistent work does not prove that no generative tool was involved. Only an attributable statement tied to the title, feature, and time period can support a specific claim. Even then, the statement may not identify every tool or asset.
What common mistakes should I avoid?
- Equating any AI label with a fully AI-made game: identify the limited category and timing.
- Ignoring marketing scope: separate store images or trailers from playable content.
- Combining platforms: keep PC, console, and user-generated-platform disclosures distinct.
- Dropping the date: a patch or policy change can alter the answer.
- Treating a disclosure as an audit: it is a developer statement with a stated scope.
- Assuming runtime data processing: require an official source before saying player input leaves the device or is retained.
- Using a third-party index as proof: indexes classify public text and can miss undisclosed or unclear use.
- Calling a game AI-free because nothing was found: report “not confirmed” instead.
What is the most defensible conclusion?
Conclude at the narrowest level the evidence supports. Name the platform, date, generation timing, content category, and feature, then identify what remains unconfirmed. “The developer discloses AI-assisted localization during development” is defensible; “the game is AI-generated” usually is not.
For a live system, add the trigger and any documented controls or data practices. For a missing disclosure, state the sources and date checked without turning silence into a guarantee. This approach gives readers a useful answer while preserving the uncertainty that the sources actually contain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a game use generative AI without showing a store-page label?
Yes. A missing label can mean the disclosure is absent, outdated, platform-specific, or incomplete. Check dated first-party material and report that use was not confirmed rather than declaring the game AI-free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes AI-assisted translation mean the game generates text while I play?
No. Translation assistance is usually a development-time use that produces text before release. Runtime generation requires a separate statement describing a player-triggered feature or other in-game system.
Can I tell from a game’s credits whether generative AI was used?
Credits may provide useful corroboration, but they are not guaranteed to list every tool or asset. Treat a credit as evidence for the scope it names and compare it with the store disclosure and dated official material.
Do live AI features always send my prompts to a cloud service?
Not necessarily. A source must identify the architecture or data handling before you can say where input is processed. Do not infer external transmission, retention, or training use solely from the presence of a live generative feature.
